The Third Carnival of American Soccer Blogs

Starting today at The Fool's Prerogative, you can peruse the excellent Third Carnival of American Soccer Blogs.
The theme is "The Way Forward" for American soccer.
Many great American soccer blog writers cast their own opinions at the subject from any angle they saw fit.
Most people chose to post articles on their own blog and then TFP links to them.
I chose to write on the impact of the Quality of Television Broadcasting in America. (Which will be hosted at TFP permanently.)
It's all great stuff by:
The DCenters
My Soccer Blog
Record As I Am
Throughball
Off The Wing
Soccer Orb
On The Pitch

Next Exit Strategy News

Pretty limited stuff here at du Nord due to time restraints (could be the same for the next couple of day too, but nothing is ever for certain until it's passed).

I am gonna run this one here again cuz for some reason I don't think enough of you read it. It's written by a du Nord favorite, Andrea Canales, and explains exactly how you can love MLS, right now. I totally agree. I love it, warts and all.

Here is a typical major beef I have with local MLS broadcasting. Colorado is owned by Kroenke Sports which also owns local sports television network Altitude, yet this weeks Colorado road game is not on TV. What the hell is that?

The PSV site has a cool little article on and picture of DaMarcus Beasley's shoes. His shoes have the "Star and Stripes" on the tongue! Another thing you might want to do at the PSV website is cruise around to the different photo pages from training session. One thing you will notice immediately is that in every single picture of DMB he has that awesome grin going on. I did not see this once during the run up to the World Cup, and I was worried about the dude. It's great to see it back.

LA Soccer News is reporting that Los Angeles star Landon Donovan was injured in pre-game warm ups for a friendly last night v Cruz Azul. He pulled his left hamstring. The extent of the injury is not yet known. MLS games last night:
Salt Lake 3-3 Chivas USA - the Goats got the tying goal from Claudio Suarez in the 3rd minute of added time. Salt Lake played well and still couldn't win, because mentally they had already gone to the locker room to celebrate the win. Ante Razov scored his league leading 12th goal of the year only 78 seconds after the opening kickoff. Jeff Cunningham, Carey Talley and Andy Williams scored for Salt Lake, while Jonathan Bornstein, who is playing out of his mind right now, scored the 2nd Chivas goal. Match report from the Salt Lake Tribune.
Colorado 1-0 Houston - Niko Hernandez continues to improve for Colorado and got the games only goal. Joe Cannon stopped several late Houston attempts to preserve the clean sheet. Match report from the Denver Post.

MLS international friendly's last night:
UANL Tigres 2-0 Dallas - The Burn won the first leg 2-0 also, so with the aggregate knotted at 2-2 the game was decided by penalty kicks. Clarence Goodson had a chance to win it for Dallas on the 5th kick after Aldo de Nigris had hit the cross bar, but the Tigres keeper made the save on Goodson sending it to sudden death pk's. Dallas keeper Dario Sala made a saved on the 6th attempt from Tigres, then stepped up himself to boldly score the winner and the Plate for FC Dallas in the inaugural Rio Grande Plate! Match report from FC Dallas & MLSnet.
Columbus 1-1 Everton - Not the prettiest match to watch, but a deserved tie with both teams going for the winner. Match report from the Columbus Dispatch, and a match report from Evertonfc.com.
-As more and more Columbus players get healthy you can see that they do have some skill and will make Sigi Schmid look like he knows what he is doing. And Sebastian Rozental, who last Saturday showed a couple flashes of his old brilliance, was at it again last night and scored an awesome goal.
-USA & Everton keeper Tim Howard is keeping a diary for the Everton team site about the teams travels in the US. Here is Day One and Day Two (about his return to an MLS stadium & meeting fans and media after the game.) Very cool. Note: Howard hilariously refers to the MLS Commissioner as Don Gormer.
-Columbus coach Sigi Schmid talks to Soccer Capital News post game.
LA 1-4 Cruz Azul - It was 0-1 at half time and 1-1 shortly after that on a goal by Kyle Martino, then Cruz Azul unleashed the hounds and won it going away. Match report by Andrea Canales for LA Soccer News.

After the game in Columbus last night a forum was hosted by MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Columbus upper echelon management, coach Schmid, and players Eddie Gaven & Jacob Thomas. Glenn Davis of the Houston Chronicle reviews the documentary film Once In A Lifetime, about the New York Cosmos heyday. Don't forget that this movie opens in my town, Minneapolis on Friday night.
-While I did see Pele play in his only trip to Minnesota, my fondest NASL and hometown Minnesota Kicks memory, by far, was the 1978 playoffs 9-2 demolition of the mighty post-Pele Cosmos. It pouted down rain that night, but in huge victory it never seems like a bad thing, but rather, another reason to party wildly. And I believe Alan Willey scored 5 for my heroes! Here's the Minneapolis Star Tribune story from that game.

Word is circulating that Italy have made AC Milan one of their entrants in the UEFA Champions league despite the penalties brought against the team for match fixing. So UEFA has scheduled an emergency board meeting to see about denying Milan's participation. I told you Berlusconi wields a massive amount of power in Italy. He can get his team anything he wants. Now lets see if his influence extends all across Europe. I bet it does.
-Rob Hughes of the International Herald Tribune on the reductions in punishment: Tainted clubs win a limited reprieve
-And in more Italy match fixing news, the judge who reduced all four teams sentences defended his actions by declaring that he felt Italian Football had already suffered a great deal, and had fixed itself. Sounds like business as usual in Italy to me.
-There is a poll in the Guardian today showing 86% of voters think that reducing those punishment was the wrong thing to do. That's not too surprising either.
-Juventus has already filed an appeal of this newest court decision, and have stated that they will file a civil suit if they are not appeased by the next proceedings. I guess they just want to be found innocent of all charges.
-The Italian soccer federation has now given the 05-06 Serie A crown to Inter Milan.

Being in Germany during the World Cup caused me to miss out on reading many top notch soccer articles. (But I will take that trade off every time!) One story that I did want to bring to your attention though is a most excellently written piece by the head coach of my Minnesota Thunder, Amos Magee. He gives his thoughts and feelings on Les Bleus, one of the first teams he ever loved.

Actual MLS games tonight that count in the standings:
-Salt Lake v Chivas USA - the team that has no idea that they have the wrong formula for success in MLS, and might possibly never realize this cuz their owner did the same thing when he ran the New York Knicks basketball team to complete suckiness v the team who realized they had the wrong formula to success in MLS and made smart changes that are spawning results.

Do you know when one of the great days in American soccer history will be? The day Frank DeFord passes away. And I don't mean that in the nasty "Frank DeFord should go die" way. No no no. That's not cool. I would never wish something untimely or bad natured death on anyone. (Except Rafa Marquez.) I mean that in the way that we won't have to read or hear his blowhardness anymore. He is just so in love with his own opinions that its gone miles beyond being "a little too much" for me. He has absolutely no respect anymore for other peoples opinions on the subject, and will not listen or have a civil discussion about it. He is the be all and end all. Game over - Frank wins, again, of course, was there another possible outcome, no, certainly not, you moron. And no matter how many times the guy says he likes the game and the World Cup etc etc, he is lying. He hates the game, and he hates people who like it or try to defend it, simple as that.

England's painfully boring ex-coach Sven Goran Eriksson is still considering coaching Jamaica - it's true, I swear. Oh how the supposedly mighty have fallen. It's kinda like a World Cup coach taking over the coaching job at New York.
~ ~ ~ ~
Not so warm words from BQ on Croatia's new coach Slaven Bilic: What I remember about Bilic is his cheap-ass tactics and theatrics in WC 98. I forget who the captain of the French team was in 98 but he couldn't play in the final because he was red carded out of the game when Bilic pulled one of his many, many cheap-shots on him and when he walked up to have a word with him Bilic dropped to the ground holding his face. The fact was, he was never touched. He did that shit throughout the wc and that 98 team that made it to 3rd place would put most of the diving teams of this past World Cup to shame. I hate to wish bad on someone but I hope the guy fails miserably.

Believe A Word News

ADDITION: In a not-so-surprising move, the Italian courts cut the penalties inflicted on the top football teams found guilty of fixing matches. All four teams, Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio appealed their sentences and have now had them REDUCED. Here are the new punishments:
-Milan who got to stay in Serie A, have seen their point deduction reduced from 15 to 8 to start the season.
-Juventus remains sacked to Serie B, but has their point deduction reduced from 30 to 17 points to start the season.
-Fiorentina & Lazio got the most favorable rulings today as they were both allowed back into the top flight after initially being demoted to Serie B with Juve. So they get to play in Serie A after all and start the season with point deductions of 19 points (Fiorentina) and 11 points (Lazio).
-Now the Italian soccer federation has to figure out which of these teams, if any, is going to be eligible for Champions League and UEFA Cup competitions. UEFA has given them until tomorrow to sort that out. I would not expect to see them get favorable rulings on this one, and will probably sit out this years prestigious big money tournaments. But, it is Italy after all, so who knows.
-Juventus have announced that they will appeal this decision as well. Can't wait.
-Very lucky for all these teams. But when the initial punishments were handed out, and the appeals process got underway I figured most of these items would be cut in half. Seeing Milan get the smallest punishment is also exactly what followers of the Italian game expect to see. Their owner has a very powerful sway, especially seeing as he owns the company that broadcasts many of the leagues games. I would have liked to have seen a lot tougher penalties handed out.

I do a lot of thinking about the state of the game in America. I can really get on a soap box and preach about the amazing progress and forward momentum seen in my lifetime. All absolutely true. But there is some cold hard reality in there too, that at times I pretend does not exsist. It can't continue. As time goes on I hope that I can put some of those thoughts into words on paper and then post em here.
-In the meantime, AM sent me this link to an article last week at Yanks Abroad concerning the marketing aspect of this game in our country. Well said.

Succumb To The Beat Surrender News

USA & KC defender Jimmy Conrad: "Holy crap, I might get to play ... in a World Cup. Holy crap. Should I stretch? ... Are my shoes tied?"
~ ~ ~ ~
MLS games Saturday:
Columbus 1-1 Los Angeles - Kind of a sludgefest for viewers. Not much to latch on to. The LA offense vanished in the second half. They need some real midfielders badly. I don't know what to say about Columbus, beyond the fact that they used their 5th goalkeeper of the season and he kept wagging his finger at people every time he made a save. I thought it was hilarious. Neither team helped themselves in a chance for the playoffs, it takes wins baby, not draws, to climb the table.
New York 1-0 Kansas City - It official now - Richie Williams is a coaching genius. Yes, a genius. Why do they need Bruce Arena. Fire him now before he ruins everything. How else do you explain the fact that for the first time since their inaugural summer the Red Bulls have won three in a row via shutout. End of story. Mike Magee with the goal.
Houston 1-1 New England - I watch it, but for some reason I get nothing from it. Do you?
Chicago 1-1 DC United - Chicago wisely honored the man who built the Chicago Fire and their new stadium (then moronically spit him out), Peter Wilt, but DC United got its 14th in a row now without a loss via Alecko Eskandarian. Nate Jacqua made sure another All Star got the goal for Chicago.
Salt Lake 0-1 Dallas - Abe Thompson powers his way to the winning goal in the 92nd minute. The fact that RSL coach John Ellinger still has a job officially make team Pres Steve Pastorino and team owner Dave Checketts cheapskates and bozo's for not firing his sorry ass.

With all the myriad of injuries that have taken Columbus to the bottom of the barrel you would think that local sports writers would understand why the team stinks. Top quality writer Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch asks if there is more to it than bad health luck, and should some blame be placed on coach Bigi Sigi and his extreme home makeover for the losing ways.
~ ~ ~ ~
The Columbus Dispatch is also reporting that former Blackburn star-on-the-rise Matt Jansen is on trial with the Crew. He was one of those guys who seemed destined for the top about 5 years ago, but had a brutal motorcycle accident and has never been the same again.

MLS international friendly on Sunday saw Chivas USA 1-1 Club America - Chivas USA wins on pk's to stun the huge club from south of the border. The Worm was the hero as Brad Guzan saved two pk's. Luis Bueno with a match report for LA Soccer News from what was apparently a very festive match. Sadly, Preston Burpo and his crazy-big-wicked-weird schnozz did not play in the nets for the Goats.
-And then there are even more MLS mid-week international friendly's this week:
Columbus v Everton - You can see this one on TV Wed July 26 at 6pm central time on ESPN2. Tim Howard will be in goal for Everton.
LA v The Cement Mixers of Cruz Azul in Santa Barbara on Wed July 26.
-It also looks like DC United is going to play Real Madrid on Aug 9 - In Seattle, of all places.
~ ~ ~ ~
I think it's a huge shame that more of these excellent looking matches are not on television. MLS is making a big mistake by not cashing in on the international flavor. A few years ago when the company called Champions World started bringing the big Euro teams to the US for preseason matches we saw a lot of them on TV. Then CW went bankrupt and SUM, which is the MLS tv and marketing wing, bought them and did the right thing in having these powerhouse teams play MLS sides instead of their Euro cousins. But now none of us get to see the games. What gives. This is not working the way it should. Why did they even bother. One last thing - some of these games are shown locally, so why aren't they at least shown nationally on Direct Kick?

Thomas Rongen has announced his USA U20 team roster to defend their title at the Milk Cup which takes place in Northern Ireland next week. (It sure will be exciting when someday soon there will not be any college players on a team like this - they should all be professionals.) They open play on the 31st against Wales, then play on Aug 2 v Denmark, and finish on Aug 4 v a team to be determined. The other group features host country Northern Ireland, Paraguay and Turkey.

In First Division games, the leagues two worst teams did damage to the leagues two best as my Minnesota Thunder, sitting in last place, beat first place Montreal in an awesome match, and 11th place Toronto drew 1-1 at 2nd place Rochester.

Portland 1-2 Seattle on Fri and Seattle 3-1 Portland on Sat
Charleston 2-0 Miami
Atlanta 1-1 Puerto Rico

Will You Be The Paper Mate News

From the Denver Post: Colorado right wing Terry Cooke was dressed Thursday night in a Devo T-shirt! YES!!

Barcelona has gotten into La Liga's arms (legs) race by snapping up defenders Gianluca Zambrotta & Lilian Thuram from demoted Juventus. I also missed an earlier signing by Barca of Chelsea striker Eidur Godjohnsen.
~ ~ ~ ~
MLS games last night:
Colorado 3-3 Chivas - This was a good, fun, end to end game. Terry Cooke showed again whey he is MLS First 11 material and should absolutely be at the All Star game (I predict there will be an injury and he will be IN!). He had two amazing crosses for goals. The second being just moments from the end (approx 92nd min) where he pulled the old Sombrero move, then flew down the line to crank a cross to the far post for Jacob Peterson to bump home. Chivas struck first after tons of those little passes they love. Paco Palencia grabbed a rebounded shot and scored from about 10 yards out. Colorado struck back nearly instantly with our main man Dedi Ben Dayan hammering home a shot after Jovan Kirovski calmly took all the Chivas defenders out of position and then fed him the ball. Chivas defender Tim Reagan got beat so bad on that one and again many other times that Bob Bradley actually pulled him. Colo coach Clavijo should have done the same with his right back Dan Gargan, cuz that guy had an awful game. Clint Mathis (remember him? I barely do) also got a great Cooke cross that Dedi flicked on for Cleetus to one time for a 2-1 lead. Colo then proceeded to played like dummies after Petke got his 2nd yellow card, and let one of the Du Nord picks for Rookie Of The Year, Jonathan Bornstein, score 2 excellent goals giving the Goats the lead back right at the 90th minute. But in with poor defensive posture, Chivas took the lead only to give up a goal within mere moments. And they did it in the waning moments too. Not Good. Make sure you go to the MLS video page and watch the highlights!
-Denver Post match report by Brian Forbes
-Bornstein who has been starting all year at left back actually started up top to replace the suspended Ante Razov. He had that early shot which Joe Cannon saved and Palencia scored on, not to mention another shot Cannon made a good foot save on, and yet another that went off the crossbar. This kid is on fire, I mean, en fuego.
~ ~ ~ ~
In another Colorado note, they have to be by far the most international team in MLS history. Here is where their players are from:
Isreal, England, Argentina (2), Spain, Brazil, Haiti, Peru and Belarus.
-Plus they have all those hair farmers (They look like a late 70's team out there.): Beckerman, Dedi, Denton, Niko, Karanka, Kirovski, Thiago Martins, Jacob Peterson, Chris Wingert. All with the long flowing locks. Now if only Cannon and Petke would get the bad blond dye job going again, and Mathis reclaimed the mohawk...... then we would really have a show.

MLS midweek games-
Last night:
Columbus 0-2 New York - Columbus showed very good quick passing skills early on, but it faded as the match went on and New York got their two goals against the grain of action. I am not saying Columbus dominated and deserved better, I'm just not sure NYRB deserved to win this one either. The first goal came from a great 25 yard diagonal pass by Edson Buddle right on to the foot of Chris Henderson who put an average shot thru the legs of Noah Palmer. NY's second goal came very late as Columbus bombed the NY goal looking for the tie, when a young fresh -legged newcomer named Jerrod Laventure chipped Palmer from 35 yards to seal it up in the 90+ minute. NY moved up the standings to a 3 way tie for third place. Columbus dropped to last (6th) place in the East. This was New York's first win on the road this season.
Tonight:
Colorado v Chivas - 7pm central time on Direct Kick

And some MLS teams had international friendly's too-
Dallas 2-0 UANL Tigres - The younger players from Dallas beat the pre-season shape Tigres in the first leg of the Rio Grande Plate. Dallas rested almost all their starters and gave the youth a chance to shine. They did. One other thing to note, the attendance was over 17,000 which blows away most Dallas regular season Saturday night games (I would hate to see the paltry #'s for a US Open Cup match), giving the impression that many Tigres fans were in the house. It also shows that many fans see this kind of match as having greater value than MLS regular season matches. Interesting. The return leg is next Wed in Monterrey.

LA 1-1 Crystal Palace (in Richmond VA) - The game was called at half time due to excessive lightning.

It's to bad for Bob Gansler that his coaching days in KC are over. He seems like a good man. And he did a great job with the USA in 90, not to mention bringing an MLS Cup and US Open Cup to KC. But they have only won 6 of their previous 26 games. The time was now. Sorry Bob. The down fall began last season when my mighty Minnesota Thunder went to KC in the Open Cup and pulverized em 3-1. KC had not lost in 8 games prior to that night. After that night they didn't win a single game the rest of the regular season, and did not qualify for the playoffs.

The USL First Division All Stars played English Championship Division's Sheffield Wednesday to a 0-0 draw last night in Cary NC. Dustin Branan represented my Minnesota Thunder on the All Star team and came on as a substitute. The USL website has a short match report.
-At half time of that game the newest team in the First Division was introduced - the Carolina Railhawks - who will begin play next season. There have a been a million players taunt someone into retaliation over the years (including Materazzi nearly every game he has ever played) and they are not punished for it. This sets an odd precedent that I am not sure I like.

-River Plate fans have again been involved in trouble at the Copa, and this time they cost their team the game. Trailing 3-1 to Libertad, the River Plate fans went crazy and the armed police had to step in, finally causing the referee to call the game off with 10 minutes left. In the previous round River fans got into it with Corinthians fans, but luckily for them their team was leading. Corinthians were the ones punished that time with the game being called early. It's sad how many time things like this happen. In Europe they found ways to ban these fans from matches. Maybe South America can figure it out too. Match report from Sports Illustrated.

This Old Rusty Leg Of Mine News

When Colorado Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo was asked who he thinks should be named as new head coach of Team USA he replied: "Clavijo!"

So BA has a new gig, and he is scheduled to take the sidelines on August 12 when his Red Bulls play the vaunted men of Barcelona. The most excellent soccer blog The Kin Of Fish was on hand at the press conference and has this to say about the event. To which I say, Awesome!
~ ~ ~ ~
I have a problem with the two players who MLS Commissioner Don Garber picked for the All Star team. His selections were midfielder Richard Mulrooney of Dallas, and forward Alecko Eskandarian of DC. I think there are many players that deserve to be on the team before those two. For stupid reasons (see previous posts) all the Chivas USA and New England players are unavailable to play in this one. So here is the du Nord list of who should not have been left off:
Kyle Beckerman - Colorado
Jose Burciaga - Kansas City
Ricardo Clark - Houston
Terry Cooke - Colorado
Kenny Cooper - Dallas
Jeff Cunningham - Salt Lake
Mark Lisi - New York
Carlos Ruiz - Dallas
Thiago (aka Flip wilson) - Chicago
Simo Valakari - Dallas
-Are there others I am missing? Do you have a quibble with my picks?

Dallas striker Kenny Cooper looks better and more convincing every time I see him play. His glancing-far-post-header goal against Chicago was truly great. I can't wait to see him get a chance with Team USA.
-Another Dallas player who scored against Chicago, Bobby Rhine, had an excellent goal celebration as he leaped into the traveling supporters section and banged on a drum!

As much as I like Inter Milan, I really despise defender Marco Materazzi. And I see France & Juventus defender Lilian Thuram feels the same way.

Last week the First XI players were announced for the MLS All Star game v Chelsea on Aug 5. Three of those players, Ante Razov, Shalrie Joseph & Clint Dempsey, were removed from the squad because their teams will battle each other during the same weekend. (Which is a complete joke.) So, MLS All Stars (& DC United) coach Peter Nowak had to pick replacements, and also had to fill out the rest of his 18 man roster. He got to pick 5 of the extra 7, while league commissioner Don Garber picked the last 2 players. Here is who they selected:
Nowak picks:
Goalkeeper-
Joe Cannon - Colorado
Defense-
Bobby Boswell - DC
Midfield
Josh Gros - DC
Ronnie O'Brien - Dallas
Freddy Adu - DC
Pablo Mastroeni - Colorado
Forward
Nate Jaqua F - Chicago
Brian Ching - Houston
Garber picks:
Midfield
Richard Mulrooney - Dallas
Forward:
Alecko Eskandarian - DC

The Mayor of Boston wants Rev's to build a new stadium in "The City"!

DC keeper Troy Perkins will start against Chelsea a couple from now in the MLS All Star Game. He also went out and got himself a second job. This is for real. He is working at the First National Bank of Arizona in the DC area. He is a mortgage loan processor. At the teams home game last weekend there was a banner hanging at RFK that read: Troy Perkins Saves. And Loans! That is so damn awesome!

Clint Dempsey had his two game suspension reduced to one. And of course during that one game off his team lost badly.

Here are the MLS scores from this past weekend:
New York 1-0 Colorado - Head coach Richie Williams gets his first win. Can anyone out there tell me why this game was played at 1pm on a Friday?
New England 1-3 Salt Lake - Salt Lake looked really really good in this road destruction of a team that was picked as the top dog by many in the pre-season. Their veterans lived up to billing and performed like they should every week. Amazing.
Chicago 2-3 Dallas - On the road and without several key starters, Dallas came from behind to win a great game! Kenny Cooper's goal was super. And Bobby Rhine's was sublime. Dallas also wins the Brimstone Cup for the 5 straight year. (The cup goes to the winner of the series between the two teams each season.)
DC United 3-2 Columbus - I don't know how Columbus managed to stay in this one, but it was close to being tied at the end despite DC basically controlling about 85 minutes of the game. I would say Columbus had 4 or 5 chances at goal all game and scored on 2, with near misses on the other couple. Sigi will get this team straightened out. Ben Olsen was a monster for DC. And his team looks really good regardless of their few mishaps in this one. I can't wait for a DC-Houston game (looks like we will have to wait until 9-30 in Houston).
Kansas City 2-3 Houston - This would now be the 6th loss in a row for KC. Miserable! Houston has become the 2nd best team in the league by far.
Chivas 0-0 Los Angeles - Many chances. Zero Results. Two teams with a lot of heart and energy who just don't have a decent quantity of skilled players on their rosters. If it was a boxing match Chivas would have won on points, but the game did not live up to it's billing overall.

11 Ante Razov – Chivas USA
10 Brian Ching - Houston
