Just Checkin In From Banbury

Hi all,

Bruce here.
It's Friday afternoon, and I am relaxing in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England.
The sky is grey of course.

Thanks to everyone who has, and who will, deputize for me at du Nord while I am away.
I have loved every word of it.

I had an interesting fact to pass along for the North American readers:
Gasoline is $11 per gallon here.
Yes, eleven.
Same amount as the number of times zones that stretch across Russia.

Have fun this weekend!

Adios mutantes,
Bruce

ps. Keep your eyes on the blue box in the left hand column that says "DP - Coming June 2008".

5-1

Ben Burton, Chairman of Section 8 Chicago here. Rather than gloating about our 5-1 victory over the weekend, there are a couple of good causes I would like to discuss.

In case you haven't heard, there were some unfortunate incidents in Columbus earlier this week. You can see what I'm talking about here:

Oh wait, you can't. At least, not anymore. Perhaps it's a sign that the issue is getting swept under the rug to avoid bad publicity. The issue, in case you didn't know, is racism. That video used to include the audio of a Columbus fan hurling the "N Word" at a New England player. I hate New England as much as the next guy, but some of us involved in MLS don't think hurling racial epithets at opposing players is the right direction for our league to go.

A bunch of us in Chicago have been meeting over the past couple of days to discuss the issue and how we can move forward both locally and nationally. We have a few short term and long term ideas but I would just like to remind anyone reading this that if spewing racism is your idea of a good time, don't bother coming to a Chicago Fire game.

On to the better news in the soccer world: saving lives.

I would like to take a moment to plug the Nothing But Nets Campaign. Our very own Diego Gutierrez and his wife Ginna has worked with the Nothing But Nets campaign, raising money for malaria prevention in Africa. The organization purchases and delivers mosquito nets to children. This is, of course, a wonderful cause. Over one million children die from malaria every year and so far they've delivered over two million nets. It's a great start.

We here at Section 8 Chicago are starting our own campaign to help raise money in Diego's name. If you visit our STORE, we have set up two ways for people to contribute.

First, we're selling a Scarf and Flag combo. Normally $30, but now just...$30! The difference is that we will donate $10 for the cause for every package you purchase. Buy them for yourself, send them to your friends and family. Put them up in your favorite soccer pub so every time you go in there, you can be reminded that you saved someone's life.

If a scarf and flag isn't your thing, you could just donate some cash, purchasing a net and the cost of delivery is $10. If you don't want to donate through us, please visit the Nothing But Nets site and get more directly involved.

Having said all that, winning big in New York was a wonderful feeling. I have to gloat a little.

Dirty South News

by Adam Spangler of This Is American Soccer

Mike Rowe is dressed in a white synthetic chemical suit, goggles, gloves, headlamp, and a cloth mask, which covers only his mouth, mutes his voice, and appears to be completely unsuitable protection for what he’s about to do. Shimmying on his stomach under an aging house which hovers inches from his back, he’s there to help a small crew of young men—all college educated Rowe points out—clean out drooping insulation, mold spores, and the carcasses of dead rats along with the various treats they left behind in life, a life so many of us take for granted.

As creator and host of Dirty Jobs, one of the most successful shows for the Discovery Channel (he also narrates several other channel favorites), Mike Rowe respectfully celebrates and sends up particular jobs most of us would probably realize existed if we took the time to think about it, but damn if we stop to give it much thought.

The concept for the show is quite simple and noted with the host’s greeting which opens every episode:

“My name is Mike Rowe, and this is my job: I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty—hard-working men and women who earn an honest living doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us. Now... get ready to get dirty."

Mike Rowe is now a wealthy television personality, but it wasn’t always that way. With Dirty Jobs, beyond the sarcasm, the self-deprecation, and the wow and gross-out factors, there is an important life lesson.

shit is hard.

Yes, the rat poo (Rowe's word choice not mine) appears to have hardened the top layer of insulation—Rowe is now up in the attic for more cleaning; the flimsy filter mask now more often than not dangling around his thick neck; brave man. So yes, a rat’s poo dries and hardens just like yours, but that’s not my point.

My point is work is hard. Putting in time is hard. Competition is hard. Keeping head and heart apart is hard. Writing is hard. Making a living at anything is hard. Making a living at soccer writing is really hard. Growing soccer in America is hard. Beating England at Wembley is hard. My point is, shit is hard. I take du Nord for granted, and Mike Rowe needs to spend some time with Bruce McGuire, a hard-working man making civilized soccer life possible for the rest of us.

Or maybe brucio as the kids call him is our Mike Rowe, shining a light into the media cavity that is soccer in America and filling it with some medicated goo.

----

You’ve seen some other guest bloggers already at du Nord this week, and you’ll see more next week. Everybody comes with their little bit of flavor, which is great, which is why soccer is the sport of the internet—as Bruce told me before I had heard it anywhere else.

Out of respect for the work the man of the North puts in (almost) every day to bring us our soccer stories, I’m going to try my best—I will fail—to do exactly what Bruce would do. I don’t know a better way to show my appreciation.

I got a big news day handed to me. So now… get ready to get dirty…

YUNEL'S CARTEL (aka the lead-off hitters)

Brian McBride will return to MLS! A true gentleman of the game; how can you be anything but psyched for this?

U.S. is said to be considering a bid to compete against England for the 2018 World Cup! On a side note, it is really gross how much power the head of the Trinidad and Tobago federation and vice-president of FIFA, Jack Warner, appears to have.

Heartfelt Get Well Soon wishes go to Leslie Osborne. The talented 27-year-old national team midfielder tore her ACL and will have surgery. A month after that she will have reconstructive surgery on her ankle. Her rehab is expected to take 8-10 months. Damn. Along with Tarpley and Kai, Osborne is one of my favorite young female players.

US MNT FRIENDLY VERSUS ENGLAND

If that Eddie Johnson strike in the 46th minute goes in, would people be singing a different tune today, about him and maybe the team?

Let us not forget this is a friendly (with a roster full of European players coming off the end of their seasons), and thus completely meaningless beyond whatever Bradley and his staff can glean from the players, line-up, strategies, and tactics used. I didn't learn anything other than we need to get on the ball. And I lay that at the coach's feet.

Jon Carter filed first for Soccernet after the game and wrote, “on this evidence the gap between the countries is as wide as ever.” Notice the fact that this story is in the “England” section of the website yet the headline reads (at the time of writing) “Falling Short.” That’s not right.

Jack Bell and Shaka Hislop rate the teams.

Craven Cottage Newsround looks at the game through a Whites lens.

Wire story on Fabio Capello’s thoughts after the game.

The BBC calls the U.S. team disappointing.

US Soccer with all the quotes and whatnots. Watching the pre-game videos as well, I think Bradley was just too humble today. From the soccer we saw, I don’t think a single player thought they could win this game. Again, I lay that at the coach's feet.

Ives Galarcep has his morning-after thoughts.

I spoke to Mr. McGuire on the phone last night – 2am in brucio time. Your distinguished blog master had a blast at Wembley stadium (all things considered). He felt as if he was at an indoor stadium, the overhanging rain guards blocking out much of the sky (some locals agreed with him). It was a beautiful stadium, Bruce told me, but he kind of wished it was the old Wembley. He said the US fan support was impressive, taking up a few big sections just like a supporters section at an English club stadium. USSF gave scarfs to people who bought tickets online (or something like that), so many of the American faithful looked great sitting all together.

He’s looking forward to finding some music stores in London over the next few days, possibly one he recalled from his industry days that sold nothing but Reggae 45’s, possibly something with a little more kick than the US MNT showed last night. Much more I’m sure from Bruce upon his return.

My thoughts from the game...

Donovan didn’t play due to a groin injury (luckily he has two more chances coming up in which to grab his 100th CAP). No matter what people say about Landon Donovan (see below), the fact remains he is our nation’s best soccer player. Nobody in the U.S. player pool has of yet shown they can have an impact on a game like him. I don’t think that’s really up for discussion.

That being said, the argument some have against Landon is the same one I have for our entire national team. One word: unspectacular.

The US MNT is like my golf game. I hang in there for a while but always have one or two blow-up holes, one or two double/triple bogies that just ruin my scorecard. I think that pretty much sums it up.

Decent ball control in between too many poor passes and bad touches. There is too little presence of an attacking mindset, creativity or flair which creates even less total offense. Mediocre set pieces. No “penetrating runs,” as noted by Harkes on ESPN Classic. Brutal breakdowns that lead to goals. The story is too often the same.

One thing that was different: the two Eddie’s—Lewis and Johnson—probably looked the best on the field. Not saying a whole lot, I know, but how long has it been since we could say that?

I just said he played well, and now I will say that Eddie Lewis should not be called into the national team anymore. Neither should Frankie Hedjuk or Josh Wolff. Given the other big news of the day, some people are going to start wondering if McBride needs back on the national team. I love him, but he does not.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that part of me would rather see the team lose 4- or 5-0 if it meant we were pushing forward, taking chances, and letting it all hang out. I would like to see a team with a burning fire under its drawers play in a game that isn’t against Mexico.

The entire idea of a friendly is unspectacular. Could fans care about this more than the players?

ESPN Classic’s coverage? Wait for it… unspectacular. Again, not bad, kinda good, just not great. They did avoid the enormous breakdowns, but the broadcasting talent and on-air passion of Harkes and Dellacamera is on par with our team’s. Does American soccer deserve a handicap?

Conclusion…

Karin? Thoughts? “Well, it's not like after the Risotto.”

MLS NEWS

Houston and Dallas drew last night in Frisco, TX. Rosario had a wonderful assist and the injury time equalizer. Eddie Robinson lost his mind and will be the star of today’s viral video extravaganza. His two-handed shove of Marcelo Saragosa was hilarious in its stupidity, pathetic the way Saragosa went down like he was shot, and just all around sad. It occurred while the two players were alone in the box, while the keeper had the ball in his hands. TV cameras were zoomed in nice and tight. What idiots. The two lovely gentlemen received yellow cards, the second of the game for Eddie Monster. FCD's Andre Rocha was shown a straight red after attacking Robinson following the incident, making it three straight games a Dallas player has been shown red. You stay classy Texas!

DALLAS NEWS

The Dallas Morning News says their classy MLS team is looking at a coach within the ranks of USSF. Not a big surprise, but kind of a let down. Dallas should be going after a coach raised south of Dallas. Maybe they are.

Canada’s National Post alerts us to the mildly surprising fact that Toronto FC coach John Carver will not be fined or suspended for his post-game comments criticizing officials. Was there no punishment because MLS agreed with his comments?

NEW JERSEY NEWS

Erik Stover, Vice President and Operations and General Manager of Red Bull Park, has been promoted to the role of Managing Director of Red Bull New York, replacing Marc de Grandpre, who resigned on April 9, 2008. Before joining Red Bull Stover was General Manager of Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Ives Galarcep’s reaction: “It is hard to defend a pro sports team hiring someone with no team management experience to run a pro team, but Red Bull has done it two times with Red Bull New York now.” That’s the nicest thing he had to say about the news.

SAN JOSE NEWS

From my man Carlisle on Centerline Soccer: "San Jose missed out on McBride... due to their decision to sign Haitian international forward Peguero Jean Philippe. When Jean Philippe put pen to paper, the Quakes automatically moved to the bottom of the allocation list that is used when former MLS players return to the league from overseas. But when Jean Philippe was put on the season-ending injury list earlier this week, I asked Doyle if the Quakes would move back to the top of the list. Doyle assured me that this was the case."

Well, as it turns out, that is not the case. San Jose lost its spot and now misses out on the prize, even if it is just whatever Chicago has to give up to get McBride.

AMERICAN SOCCER NEWS

Bigger news than US v England? Everyone knows Brian McBride is coming home. Gotta love it. But gotta wonder what he has left after all the bumps and bruises and face-plates and new knees. No real discussion on that yet; or how much he will cost or how much Chicago—can he go anywhere else?—will have to give up for him. For now, and rightfully so, everyone is just celebrating his homecoming.

Fulham’s website has a wonderful photo gallery of McBride’s career.

(I still contend that Fulham has the best website of any club in the world, but they won’t exactly be America’s team anymore. Only Dempsey and Johnson will be left next year if Kasey Keller indeed returns to Seattle.)

Thoughts from du Nord favorite Craven Cottage Newsround on McBride’s retirement include a look back at what Bruce had to say about the striker in last year's Fulham Review. 2008 edition coming soon!

Steve Goff has all scenarios figured out for McBride’s entry into MLS. Looks like we sit and wait to see what Toronto does with the first allocation option.

Philadelphia will receive the first expansion team in the yet to begin women’s professional league, bringing the total number of teams to 8 in 2010.

DuNord + Austin = DuSud

The USA loses to England 2-0. Well, we can't say this is a surprising result. The USA lost to a better team. Period. Hey, it's only a Friendly. We'll get over it.

I watched the game with Harry Williams and Dita Niyogi of The Texas Fair Defense Project. And speaking of fair defense, I thought the USA's was fairly good. Pearce, Bocanegra, Onyewu, and Cherundolo played a solid game. The problem was that when the defense cleared the ball, our midfielders and forwards usually couldn't hold it.

England's first goal resulted from a needless foul by Ricardo Clark. Clark tripped Wes Brown after Beasley had already won the ball. But let's not blame any one player for the loss. The whole team has a lot of work to do if they want to get to the level of a team like England. We'll get there, some day.

Fortunately, there is some good news for American soccer today. DC United desperately needs a new stadium, and the D.C. City Council seems to be inclined to help the team finance it. Let's all hope that works out.

At half time ESPN showed clips of the great 1993 USA victory over England. If you haven't seen that match, that one and many others are on my web site: www.DaveBrett.com

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love MLS

Graham Fox is a freelance soccer writer from Manhattan, Kansas. He is a KC Wizards fan, a du Nord regular, and an advocate for fun. Find him at grahamfox@gmail.com

Do you know that:
  • Eurosnobs look down on you for watching MLS?
  • Low attendance is your fault?
  • The level of play in MLS could be higher if you would have eaten one less pickled egg last night?
  • You made your grandma cry when you told her the latest Columbus attend numbers?
Many MLS fans worry so much about attendance and what people think about MLS that they contemplate harai-kari when they read the latest Kansas City attendance numbers. As a fellow du Nord and MLS fan I’ve composed this small guide to stop you from doing anything drastic.

In Which I Start Watching Soccer
I started following soccer the way most Americans do. I shelled out money for Fox Soccer Channel and started watching English Premier League games. I become addicted and started a ritual that many males my age in the US take part in: Waking up at 5am on Saturday mornings to catch the day’s games. I napped my way through a season before I decided to follow Liverpool.

For the soccer fan in the United States, it is hard to pick an EPL team to be a fan of. We cannot experience regional pride or community pride, all we can experience is a false sense of belonging. Does that mean I woke up my roommate at 6am by jumping up and down and yelling when Peter Crouch scored his first goal for Liverpool because I had false emotions? No, but they were anchored in false connections.

After a season of watching the EPL I realized something that those English chaps don’t seem to have a problem with. Only four teams have a chance of winning (or as everyone points out when they realizes I like Liverpool, three teams).

In Which I Become Bored With the EPL
As I watched and learned I became increasingly bored with the Premier League. What is the point? If you aren’t a fan of the top four you can hope your team will maybe make it to a European spot or crack the top ten but that is it. Everyone knows who is likely to win at the start of the season. They win. Everyone knows about who will go down, and they do. How exciting.

I turned to Major League Soccer. I wanted to actually go to a game instead of watching it on TV. I wanted a league where more than four teams had a chance of winning.

The more I followed MLS the less I cared about Liverpool and the EPL. My devotion to Liverpool was based on a vague connection to a team thousands of miles away that I had no chance of seeing live. Major League Soccer is solid and real.

In Which I Start to Worry
At the start of last season I started to closely following MLS and the Kansas City Wizards. Towards the middle of the season I headed to Arrowhead to cheer on KC. I could actually see them live, had a regional connection with them, and a couple friends who I knew would be at the game. After my first live game I was hooked. From that point on I join the rest of you in:
  • Watching as many MLS games as possible
  • Posting regularly on several message boards
  • Arguing with anyone who made fun of MLS
  • Worrying about the level of play
  • Anxiously reading the latest attendance numbers
  • Wondering what Europeans though of MLS
  • Arguing about how MLS compares with other leagues
  • Worrying about DP spots
  • Hating Beckman for being a punk-ass and pretending to drop-kick the ball at Eloy Colombano
Go look at BigSoccer and scan the general MLS forum. Everyone is worrying. Almost every thread is moaning about quality, refs, attendance, or the league in general. The more I read the more I became concerned about attendance and how everyone perceives MLS, especially those Europeans with their fancy leagues.

In Which I Have A Realization
Then it happened. As I was downing my Admiral Nelson in the sun pounded Arrowhead parking lot I stopped caring about all of that shit. There was no reason to worry, the league was out of my hands, and all I could do for attendance is show up when I can scrounge the gas money.

Be like me. Stop caring as much and enjoy the unique league that is MLS. Do yourself a favor:
  1. Buy a handle of Admiral Nelson
  2. Drink it
  3. Yell till your voice crackles at the opposing team’s goal keeper
  4. When he switches ends, follow and throw streamers at him until security tells you to stop
  5. Scream “Waiiiiibeeeelllll” whenever he runs near you
Congratulations, you didn’t worry at all while you were doing that. Now go home and do the same (the not worrying, not the drinking of handles).

Don’t stop caring, stay informed, keep reading du Nord, browse BigSoccer when you want to kill some brain cells, but remember to enjoy the game. It’s all we’ve got.

On either side of the Atlantic

You never realize just how much work someone puts into something until you try and do it for yourself. Having said that, my ambitious effort to try and give you a bit of what Bruce provides went by the wayside. I will try and provide a few links and some sort of insight or something.

Some of the topics of the day...

US-ENGLAND

Yes, it's almost here. The United States will play England in London's Wembley Stadium for the first time since 1994. Anyone remember that game? I actually watched it recently. For some reason, it was on Fox Soccer Channel some time last year. I don't remember the game when it happened, but I watched the classic version. Two things I took away from that match - 1) There was a lot of space from the edge of the field to the stands, like way too much space; 2) The US uniforms were hideous.

Here's an actual match report from that game via the New York Times.

Also, here's the English FA's look back at their American past. This is actually part of their coverage for the previous US-England game, in Chicago a few years back.

As for Wednesday's game, US Soccer has plenty of coverage, including a Studio 90 from England.

Jeff Carlisle of ESPN also chimes in with a match preview.

Here's an updated roster for the game as Frankie Hejduk has been called in for the match. Hejduk is having a fine season but there is some sort of backlash every time he's called in. Yes, he's older but he can still contribute both on and off the field.

Who would you start? Me... Howard, Pearce, Bocanegra, DeMerit, Cherundolo, Lewis, Bradley, Clark, Adu, Donovan, Dempsey. I'm not much of an Onyewu fan...

MLS CLUBS

There will actually be a pair of games on Tuesday featuring MLS clubs.

The LA Galaxy will host Colorado in a US Open Cup play-in match. Both teams finished out of the playoffs a year ago and thus need to qualify for the US Open Cup. This game won't be on television and I believe the only radio broadcast will be in Spanish. Just a note to readers, check out my blog Sideline Views as we'll provide plenty of coverage for the game there, including a running blog, post-game audio and video highlights. They might be grainy and shaky but I'll try and get highlights of the goals and maybe some game action as well. The game starts at 7:30 pm PT.

As for the traditional media, here is a match preview from Scott Wolf of the LA news group.

Greg Daurio looks at the match for MLSnet.com.

And this is from yours truly for The Press-Enterprise. It's not a straight match preview but rather a look at the club's overall challenges without Landon Donovan and David Beckham for the upcoming season.

Another match of interest will take place in Montreal as Toronto FC will play the Montreal Impact of the USL First Division. The match is part of a series of games that also includes the Vancouver Whitecaps. One team will represent Canada in the upcoming CONCACAF Champions League, and this is how that team will be determined.

Mark Masters of the National Post takes a look at the game.

Also, Larry Millson of the Globe and Mail writes about Toronto FC's important match.

LATE ADD: Looks like I missed a match today, but come on, it's Columbus-Real Salt Lake. I'm sure you can forgive me for overlooking that massive encounter.

The Salt Lake Tribune previews the match and tells us that the game doesn't count in the regular season standings. Thanks. Probably some editor there was like 'What's this game for again? The Open Cup? Well, you might want to put in there that the game doesn't count in the standings.' Next, they'll tell us that the game will feature goalposts, one ball and 11 players on each side, just so the readers are clear on that. Thanks again for dumbing down the coverage.

James Edward of the Deseret News previews the match as well. No mention from James about the significance of the match on the regular season. I suppose the reader will have to figure out on their own that a US Open Cup play-in game is different than the Major League Soccer regular season.

Meanwhile, Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch looks at the game from the hosts' point-of-view.

Okay, well, there you go. Just a sampling of what is out there. There will be more guest bloggers here throughout the upcoming days so keep an eye out for more posts.

DuSouth

Greetings from Austin, TX. This is Dave Brett Wasser. You might know me from my soccer video collection DaveBrett.com. I do more than watch old games. I actually watch live games too. On Wednesday I'll be writing here on DuNord about the USA-England game. For those of you in Austin, I'll be at watching it at Fado's on 4th St. Feel free to say hello. I'm the guy with blue hair.

For those of you with nostalgia for the old days, all this week ESPN Classic is showing edited versions of old European Championship Finals. They are at 7:00 pm Eastern/6:00 Central. The games are edited to an hour. With the commercials, you get to see about half the game, which is not that bad. Hey, it's a lot better than most of the crap they show on ESPN Classic.

Tonight (Tuesday) is the 1976 European Championship. This was Czechoslovakia's first -- and last -- major championship. They beat the mighty Germans on penalty kicks. It's hard to believe that back in 1976 the European Championship only consisted of four teams. So there were two semfinal matches, the final, and a third place match. That's it. Oh, how times have changed.

The keys to du Nord's car

Hello all. I must say, I'm honored to be here filling for the great Brucio. This is Luis Bueno of SI.com/MLSnet.com/The Press-Enterprise. Like Bruce, I'm a fellow blogger as I run Sideline Views along with Andrea Canales. Bruce is across the pond, going over to England for two weeks of well-deserved R & R, and he was kind enough to ask me to fill in for him. Well, I guess I'm one of several guest bloggers who are here to fill in some shoes that can't be filled in, really.

As I type, the Galaxy-Kansas City game is kicking off. They just rolled the ball out for the start of the game and Scott Sealy had a cross cleared away from the pentalty area. No, I'm not going to do a running blog. You can catch that here as Andrea has that up and running on our blog.

I should tell you all about my thoughts on du Nord. I actually don't remember when the first time I logged onto du Nord was, but it's one of my absolute favorite sites to visit, soccer or otherwise. As a writer, I take it as an honor when Bruce links to one of my stories. On average, I write anywhere from six to 10 stories a week, but not all of them are linked on here. So the ones that are actually excite me a bit. It's like affirmation of a job well done, and conversely when a story isn't linked I look at it like a form of constructive criticism, like 'Okay, that sotry wasn't up to du Nord's standards, how can I make the next one better?'

As I said, I'm one of several guest bloggers Bruce lined up to fill in for him over the next few weeks. I'll try and do some of the stuff we all expect from du Nord, and that is provide links to soccer stories and a bit of commentary. But I'm not about to try and replace Bruce because, believe me, Bruce is a giant in the soccer blogoshpere. And I'm honored that I've been handed the keys to du Nord's car for a few weeks.

Wild Blue (Grey?) Yonder

Hi all,

I am flying off to England tonight for a 2 week long vacation!

While I am away you will see a whole slew of guest bloggers taking over the wheel of du Nord's company truck. (And you heathens better damn well be nice to them.)

Also note that du Nord will be closed on Mon May 26 for Memorial Day.

Hope you enjoy.

See ya when I return,
Bruce

ps. I predict an Italy v Germany final at Euro 08.

PS. I will be at the England v USA game in Wembley Stadium next Wednesday night!

PPS. Anyone know a spot in London where I can watch the June 7 USA v Spain match?

UEFA Champions League Final

Match & Score:
-Wed May 22 in Moscow
Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United - Man U win it 6-5 on Penalty Kicks after Extra Time. I do not like ending games that way, but there is no denying how big the drama is. John Terry slipped & missed the entire net on the 5th PK for Chelsea which would have won it. He looked destroyed afterward.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

My notes on the game:
-Didier Drogba with his dumb slap was a huge goat for Chelsea.
-Cristiano Ronaldo was nearly a huge goat for Man U after that idiotic Penalty Kick, which is illegal. And why did he have to lay in the middle of the field by himself after the win? Couldn't he go celebrate with his teammates first, then take a moment for himself? That's hard to do with your ego is that big.
-Ronaldo also showed his superior skills with a cool calm towering header for the games first goal.
-John Terry left every bit of effort he had on that field for Chelsea, the pulled a Beckham on his Penalty Kick miss. In a way I feel bad for Terry, he works too hard to have that end his season. On the other hand, the guy gets paid an obscene amount of money for what he does.
-Edwin Van Der Sar was saved twice by his post down the stretch keeping Man U in the game, then stuffed a weak PK from Anelka to seal it.
-It was a crime that they had to play on grass laid over fake turf. It looked really soft, really uneven, and certainly not firm enough for great traction. Chunks of sod popped up everywhere, and I know that contributed a great deal to all the players cramping up.
-American Owner 1-0 Russian Owner.
-Everyone has said this already, but Avram Grant is one odd looking guy.
-Why oh why would you play someone as amazingly talented as Michael Essien at left back. Seriously. To stop C Ronaldo? Well, that didn't work, cuz Essien got burned for the goal. He needed to be in the midfield instead of that hack Makalele, contributing to the attack and turning his great defense into instant offense. Mistake!
-42 goals this season by C Ronaldo. Simply astounding! Wow! Impressive does not come close to description. (But you know what, Ruud Van Nistelrooy had 44 goals for Man U in the 2002-03 season.)
-I am a sucker for those post game on-field celebrations. I love to see the pure joy of it all.
-Was that Frank Lampard's last game for Chelsea?

Jack Warner/FIFA Scandal News

The Trinidad Express reports on the Arbiter's ruling in favor of Trinidad & Tobago 06 World Cup players who say they were denied bonus's promised by Jack Warner and the T & T federation. After the tournament they expected to receive large payments each, but were only given a few hundred dollar after Warner said that was all that was left over. The Arbiter sees it very differently and now the players are asking for $44 Million! Hahahahaha. Watch Jack flip out now! How much you want to bet that there is an appeal filed?
-The leader of the players was goalkeeper Shaka Hislop and here is his reaction to the ruling.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

And as if Warner needs more on his plate, he has now come into conflict with the T&T government who own the national stadium, over rent for the June 1 centennial match v England. Warner claims the government asked for more money after an agreement on rent had been reached. He called them evil, and threatens to cancel the match. He cracks me up man. Today the two sides agreed to meet and discuss the matter.
-You will love this. Here is Warner's exact quote about the government: "Never has an evil been perpetrated on a country in the field of sport and more so football, than this present Minister of Sport. And for me, enough is enough!" Brilliant stuff Jacky my man!
