Some Soccer News for Mar 7, 2016

It's Day 67 of 2016.

MLS Opening Day Summary!
-Sun Mar 6
NYRB 0-2 T - game was described to me by a RB supporter as "torture."
OC 2-2 RSL - My friend Superrookie left the game early with OC losing to beat the traffic, then OC scores twice after the 90th!
CF 3-4 NYC - the tire fire is raging, but Chicago will get it under control, I promise. (NYC? who knows, still no defense)
HD 3-3 NER - Houston looked great in black!
SJE 1-0 CR - Wondo.
D 2-0 PU - Castillo stretchered off - TV announcers don't ask coach about it in post-game interview. (Adductor strain - muscle that connects thigh to pelvis.)
PT 2-1 CC - Rose City over #CrewSC by the same score as the Final.
VW 2-3 MI - are we underestimating the Impact?
SS 0-1 SKC - uh oh... Frei gave up a blunderous goal?
LAG 4-1 DCU - the return of Magic Mike!
-36 goals in 10 games for an average of 3.6 per game. YES!

My pick for league MVP Mauro Diaz of Dallas had the best weekend of any player until Mike Magee came on at halftime for LA Galaxy in the last game of the day. (Ignacio Piatti of Montreal had a pretty great weekend too.)
-Here is what Magic Mike did in 45 minutes:
Set up the 1st goal with his corner kick
Scored the 2nd goal by chipping the keeper
Drew a foul in the box for the 3rd goal
Scored the 4th goal with a flashing header
-I would say Magee's return to LA was a success! A 4-1 win!

Steven Gerard and Andrea Pirlo look like really old men out there. They should be on the bench. Their price tag says they won't be. Which coach will pull the plug first?

Minn United played a friendly against University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon at Parade Park and won 2-0 on goals by Cristian Ramirez in the first half and Aaron Pitchkolan in the 2nd half. Many regulars were not even in uniform for MNUFC: Pinho, Vicentini, Laing, Ndjock, Ibson, Banks.

MNUFC has headed to Mexico for 10 days of training and 3 matches.

Centerback Damion Lowe who has been training with Minnesota in preseason posted a note on Twitter that he has joined the team. We have not heard anything official, but the guess is that it will be a loan from Seattle Sounders.

By the way, that was Grant Bell who played some at right fullback during the UNO game on Saturday. He is from Little Falls MN, played for Thunder Academy and attended Bradley University. He went to Mexico with the team today.

Thanks to everyone on Fox that fought to get the Dortmund v Bayern game on TV last weekend. (For some reason they had chosen not to show it, but fans kicked up a loud ruckus.) The game ended scoreless, which is basically a victory for Bayern who remain 5 points ahead. Report by Rafael Honigstein of the Guardian.
