Y'ALL READY FOR THIS?

The Houston Chronicle reports that Leslie Alexander is nearing completion of the purchase of the Houston Dynamo.
-He also owns the Houston Rockets NBA team.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Is that fair?

Kyle McCarthy of Goal.com writes about the potential signings of big name foreign free agents by LA and Seattle down the stretch.
-How do they fit these players into the salary cap?
-McCarthy didn't even get to the question of "Where do these teams get all the international roster spots?" New York anyone?

I am sure there is an answer, but for instance, each team is allowed 8 international players on their roster and New York has 14, while LA has 8.
-So it would make sense that LA would need to remove 1 player from their roster to add Wilhelmson.
-Seattle has 15 international players, but only 6 count officially for one reason or another according to their detailed roster page. The Sounders are one of the only teams that gives roster designation for contractually "international" players. While New York gives no designations of any kind at all for their players.

Fascinating stuff.

FACT OF THE DAY

Joshua Mayers of the Seattle Times with a detailed timeline of the return of Steve Zakuani - from badly broken leg to the Seattle starting 11 again.

As to the question on MLS and international slots, I think the answer for the Red Bulls is that they actually have only 11 international players (as defined by MLS) and have traded for 3 additional slots for a total of 11 slots. The secret is how MLS defines an international player. For US-based teams, domestic players are players who are US citizens, have a green card or have some special status (e.g., refugee or asylum). Canada-based teams are a bit different (must have 3 Canadian citizens, permanent resident or special status players) and both Canadian and US players count as domestic). So Henry, LeToux, Tainio, Sam, Marquez, Lindpere, Cahill, Solli, Miller, Holgersson, and Conde are the internationals. Jose Angulo and Jhonny Arteaga are the question marks, but while born in Colombia, both grew up in the US and went to high school here (Clifton, NJ and Stamford, CT, respectively), so I suspect they are either naturalized US citizens or green card holders. Victor Palsson is the other question since he is Icelandic, but he has been loaned out so doesn't need a slot.

I am sure that if you look at other teams you will find the same sort of answers---off the top of my head, Osvaldo Alonzo at Seattle would fall in the refugee category, De Ro has a green card, etc.

I concur with the first comment; i follow Sounders and I can recall past articles announcing when specific intl players obtain their green card and the explanation that it frees up an intl player slot when that occurs (Leo Gonzales, Rosales, Fernandez, Montero, et al). See http://seattletimes.com/html/soundersfcblog/2017711061_alvaro_fernandez_receives_his.html

Great stuff by the two commentors. That is what I figured was going on, but its good to hear it from others. Huge thanks.

I made a mistake though. I had forgotten that Osvaldo Alonzo is no longer a refugee and is now a full-blown US citizen.
