Some Soccer News for Wed Sep 12, 2012

STARTERS

It was a rare double for me last night as both my Minnesota Stars won and the USA won.
-Minnesota ended a 9 game streak without a win, and clinched a playoff spot in a 4-0 rout of Puerto Rico. (2nd time this season the Stars beat the Islanders by that scoreline at home.)
-The USA dominated Jamaica but needed a 2nd half free kick to actually get the points. Many other chances in the 1st half were stopped by the Jamaican keeper Dwayne Miller who plays for Syrianska in Sweden.

Mexico clinched their spot on the CONCACAF Hexagonal for World Cup qualifying with their 4th win in as many games.

STORY OF THE DAY

Ben Rycroft who has been covering Canadian soccer for several years finds himself in the middle of uncovering a matchfixing scandal that has seen him and his family receive death threats. Yes death threats. Unreal.

The CBC has done a special report for TV.
-And today Rycroft wrote about the past 18 months of his life for Metro News. This is just the first part of his story.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

The Stars clinched the final NASL playoff spot last night with a complete 90 minute domination of Puerto Rico.

Matches + Scores:
-Tue Sep 11
Minnesota Stars 4-0 Puerto Rico Islanders - MS goals by Nate Polak, Miguel Ibarra, Jamie Watson + Amani Walker.
Venue: NSC Stadium - Blaine MN
-Sat Sep 15
Puerto Rico Islanders v Minnesota Stars
Venue: Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

World Cup Qualifying

Before we do anything else, lets just look again at the faces Clint Dempsey was making during the game that everyone who was watching on TV was talking about!

Another win that felt more like a relief than a victory to me.
-Great first half performance though. Maybe the best the team has looked under Klinsmann.
-The USA followed their worst performance under Klinsi (2nd half in Jamaica) with their best (1st half in Columbus.)

US Soccer with a game recap.

Leander Schaerlaeckens of Fox Soccer with a review of the importance of Sep 11 and the impact it had on the atmosphere of the game.

Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch on the power of the night at Crew Stadium, which he calls "a veritable steel lunch bucket."

Shawn Mitchell of the Dispatch with the match report.

Brian Straus of Sporting News with a good post game breakdown.

Graham Parker of the Guardian has a very cautious post game analysis from last night that I find refreshing for not getting caught up in the "big win in Columbus" jubilation.

US Soccer gives us videos too:
-MNT vs. Jamaica: Highlights
-MNT vs. Jamaica: Post-game Reactions
-MNT vs. Jamaica: Post-game Press Conference

The raves were in for the crowd in Columbus. I can't wait to hear from my friends who were in attendance what they thought.
-And I can't wait to be attendance myself on Oct 16 in Kansas City where I know the crowd can be off the hook awesome.

Great freekick goal by Herculez Gomez won the game, in the 55th min, a little less than 30 yards from goal, straight down the middle of the field. Dempsey drew the foul. Herculez capitalized putting his shot the far right side where Jamaican keeper Dwayne Miller could only tip as it went into the back of the net. (Terrible goalkeeping on that play by the way.)
-Gomez also earned a Penalty Kick in the second half that the referee waved off.

Graham Zusi did well in his debut. How he didn't score we will never know. 3 great chances, 1 great save, 1 off the bar and 1 near miss.

Great to see Danny Williams finally play a game for the USA in his normal everyday position. He was very positive and productive. And should have scored a spectacular goal, only for a few inches of goal post.

Steve Cherundolo was also a big presence in the game Cherun and Doloing up and down the right flank all game long.

Player ratings:
-Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America.
-Greg Seltzer of MLSsoccer.com.
-Brian Sciaretta of the New York Times.
-Travis Clark of Top Drawer Soccer.

Words from Jamaica:

"The Americans gradually corralled the Jamaicans like sharks smelling blood."

Gordon Williams of the Gleaner: Wide Open.

Sean Williams of the Observer: Boyz Go Down.

If Tahiti lost 4-0 to New Caledonia, I shudder to think what will happen to them at the Confederations Cup.

There could be one or more of those beatdowns like Australia would give to Oceania foes in the cards.
