Some Soccer News for Tue Aug 14, 2012

STARTERS

Columbus Crew president Mark McCullers with words on the passing of Kirk Urso.

dN

Chicago captain Logan Pause suffered two broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a collision with former teammate Bakary Soumare during the first half of the Fire game at Philadelphia on Sunday. He will be out up to 6 weeks. Wow.
-The most amazing thing about this story is that he played nearly 20 more minutes after the collision. Unreal.
-The injury was so bad he couldn't fly, so the team rented a van and Pause, head coach Frank Klopas, teammate Chris Rolfe, a trainer and an assistant coach rode 11 hours back to Chicago.

STORY OF THE DAY

Jonathan Wilson of the Guardian breaks down Brazil's failure in the Olympic final.
-You need all that talent, but you also have to know how to play as a team.

STINKIEST MLS GAME OF THE YEAR

On Wednesday night we have to witness Toronto v Portland. Ugh. The two worst teams in the league "slug" it out.

John Molinaro of Sports Net previews this ugliness.

DU NORD AT THE CONTROLS

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

Friendly

For the record, I don't like this roster, at all, and the outcome of the game DOES MATTER because its USA-Mexico, unlike other friendlies.
-I think these players should NEVER be on this roster: Edgar Castillo, Michael Fiscal, Alan Gordon, Brek Shea, Matt Besler, Sean Johnson and Steven Beithashour.
-The only guy who can actually learn something from this game is Klinsmann himself. Lets hope he does, cuz so far he seems to want to learn everything the hard way.

dN

This will be the first friendly game between the two countries in Mexican since 1984!

The USA has played in Mexico 24 times. They have never won, tied once and lost the other twenty three. Not good.
-At Azteca the record is 0 wins, 1 tie, and 8 losses.

Word from Mexico City is that Mo Edu will be starting at centerback. Yup, moving a guy in there for one game. Alongside another converted centerback Geoff Cameron. Against Mexico. It has disaster written all over it.
-I just can't him getting the start. I would bet on Orozco and Cameron. But what do I know.

i love how defeated you already sound on the USA-MEX game. You cannot win every game and this is how young guys get experience. The biggest knock on the USA has always been lack of depth. This is how you gain depth until the youth system gets better.

Castillo, Fiscal, Bessler, Beitashour? Why no Lichaj? Why not Ream over Fiscal? Is Altidore injured or something? He didn't look injured when he torched Ajax last weekend. Our defense is going to get brutalized.

And I am thoroughly unconvinced by Klinsi. Loved him as a player (remember that goal against Korea in the Cotton Bowl in WC 94?) but think his coaching decisions are suspect.
