Some Soccer News for Mon Aug 6, 2012

STARTERS

Lets stop everything for a few moments and open our hearts to the family, friends and teammates of Columbus Crew player Kirk Urso who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning. Its a very sad day. RIP Kirk Urso.

There has been no further word on the cause of Urso's death. He fell unconscious at a Columbus bar and first responders failed to revive him.

dN

A stunning win in the final seconds of Added Extra Time sees the USA Women return to the Olympic Final for the 5th time. They trailed Canada three times and somehow won in 4-3.

dN

Emphatic wins for contenders Houston and Seattle this weekend!

dN

Remember that guy that from Colombia who New England signed in the preseason who then turned around and told local press he didn't want to move? Then he ended up coming to New England anyway? Barely? Anyway, they cut him today. He was useless. His name is Jose Moreno.

dN

Coming off a championship season Boca Juniors open the Apertura in exactly the wrong way, losing 3-0 at Quilmes.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

The Stars thought they had their win and then gave up an own goal in the dying moments up in Edmonton.
-Stars midfielder Geison Moura was the victim of a brutal foul near the end of the game and suffered a concussion. As he went up for a head ball Edmonton's Paul Hamilton came flying in out of control and violently took Moura's head off. Hamilton should be punished by the league for that out of line foul.

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

Jon Godfrey of the New York Times with an early look at Mexico v USA on Aug 15. Who will be on the roster?

Andrew Wiebe of MLSsoccer.com talks to Herculez Gomez who really wants to play for the USA in Mexico City.
-You can be certain Herc will be on that roster.

USA WOMEN AT THE OLYMPICS

What can you say? Simply amazing, works for me. Down 0-1. Tie it up. Down 1-2. Tie it up. Down 2-3. Tie it up. Then. Win it 4-3. In stoppage time of Added Extra Time. Wow.

dN

The USA were just fantastic. But you have to feel distraught for Canada. What else did they have to do to win that? A lot of people will point at the referee and ask questions. I try not to ever do that, even when my own teams is the victim. There are so many chances in every game and one or two calls at certain times are not to blame. I will admit the one was pretty damn weird. It happens, every game, but usually not to that extent. On the other hand if we held players to that same standard of perfection then no players would ever come close to taking the field.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Has The "Beckham Rule" Worked For MLS?

Bobby McMahon of Forbes looks at the value of the Designated Player.

DID YOU KNOW?

LE Eisenmenger of the Examiner with a big profile new CONCACAF general secretary Enrique Sanz.
-Including a Q + A with Sanz.

NO SURPRISE THERE

I hear that David Beckham and Landon Donovan were complaining about the referee after they got destroyed by Seattle last night. No surprise there. Its always someone elses fault but their own. Whiners.

EH

I watched the NBCSN documentary on Sunday night, MLS36 Chris Wondolowski, and was slightly underwhelmed. There were times when it was excellent; the locker room, the tiny bits of on-field stuff like Wondo interacting with John Terry, and the personal stuff with his wife etc. But overall the production felt more Saturday morning kids show then prime time sports show. My biggest complaint was the voice over. With all the amazing unique voices in the world they used one that was completely generic. I give it a B-.
