Some Soccer News for Mon Aug 20, 2012

STARTERS

Jozy Altidore with 2 more goals for AZ, thi time against Heracles. Giving him 4 in 2 games to start the season.
-Video of the whole shebang right here.

dN

With Everton beginning the new season on a Monday night under the lights at home against Manchester United (and WINNING!) you really have to wonder what is going through Landon Donovan's head. Does he wish he was there? And if he does, How strongly?

dN

Toil and serious trouble in the land of Billion Dollar Payrolls as Paris St Germaine bumble to their 2nd straight tie to begin the season, this time a scoreless game at ordinary Ajaccio. Oh Uh!

STORY OF THE DAY

Thomas Floyd of the Washington Times with a particularly insightful article on calls that referees don't need to make that can wrongly effect games.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

The Stars found a way to not win again, or score for that matter, yet they trotted about basically the same first 11 and 3 subs that they have used through this whole struggle. I don't get it. When things go poorly don't you look for new ways to try and make it work?

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The traveling fans have come a long way to watch us."
-Kenny Miller, new kid in Vancouver, is disappointed in his teams loss in Seattle, and feels bad for the fans.

Can someone send this guy a computer with Google Maps on it so he can see that this is the third shortest commute in the league, there is nothing relatively long about it:
1. LA to Chivas - 0:00
2. Philadelphia to New York - 1:40
3. Seattle to Vancouver - 2:40

BEST IDEA I'VE HEARD ALL DAY

Jason De Vos of TSN with a very logically sound correction to the MLS disciplinary committee's decisions.

De Vos is one of the most leveled headed guys I have ever read in soccer. His ideas always need to be considered.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

What is going on with Oguchi Onyewu at Sporting in Portugal?

He was not in uniform for their opening game of the season and he is not on the teams official roster that was submitted for UEFA Europa League. From that you have to assume that they are trying to sell him or he is injured.

This is posted on his Twitter account dated Aug 1: "Just to be clear...I love SCP and am very happy here!! And I want and intend on staying here until the end of my contract."

WELL WELL WELL

There will be four big Italian derbies this season:
Milan - Inter
Roma - Lazio
Juventus - Torino
Genoa - Sampdoria

OPENING WEEKEND IN THE WORLD'S BIGGEST LEAGUES

A look at how things went on opening weekend for both the English Premier League and Spanish Primera Division: (there are games yet to be played today)

EPL

The champs Man City struggled to beat promoted Southampton, but their main chaser Man United flopped to a loss. Three other contenders Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham faltered in their first games too. Fulham + Swansea rolled to big wins. With Chelsea getting the job done in efficient order (and a touch of, dare we say it, flair.) Newcastle, West Ham and West Brom were also winners.

The Guardian with 10 talking points from the opening weekend in the Premier League.

Matches + Scores:
-Sat Aug 18
Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland
Fulham 5-0 Norwich
Queens Park Rangers 0-5 Swansea

Wigan 0-2 Chelsea
Manchester City 3-2 Southampton
-Mon Aug 20

dN

La Liga

After dropping 2 points at home in all of last season Real Madrid did it on day 1 this time around. They gagged big time and could only tie Valencia. Meanwhile Barcelona steamrolled Sociedad after an awkward start to the game. Sevilla who will shoot for 3rd place this season also won.

Sid Lowe of the Guardian on a "delightful" opening weekend in Spain.

Matches + Scores:
-Sat Aug 18
Celta Vigo 0-1 Malaga
Sevilla 2-1 Getafe
Mallorca 2-1 Espanyol
-Sun Aug 19
Athletic Bilbao 3-5 Betis
Real Madrid 1-1 Valencia
Barcelona 5-1 Sociedad
Levante 1-1 Atletico Madrid
-Mon Aug 20
Deportivo La Coruna v Osasuna
Vallecano v Granada
Zaragoza v Valladolid

FACT OF THE DAY

Fifth place DC United has been struggling on the field, and between the ears, lately, and this week could be make or break their season.

Two huge ahead games in just a few days:
-On Wednesday they host 4th place Chicago Fire SC who sit 4 points ahead of them.
-Then on Saturday they must go to Montreal who are 1 place and 1 point behind in the chase for the final playoff berth. (The biggest difference is that Montreal has played 4 more games than DC. 3 more by the time they meet.)

dN

Chicago and Seattle crossed the 40 point threshold.

dN

Portland is having a meltdown today saying the referee blew a call that cost them a goal.
-In case you missed it, read this article from the Oregonian to see what I am talking about. -I was watching the game and thought the call was hinky too, but it did not go down as the Portland players and this article say it does. They say the whistle was blown and they stopped playing, then Tim Cahill shot the ball and scored. 100% incorrect. The whistle clearly goes off as the ball leaves Cahill's foot and at that point no one from Portland has stopped playing. Then there is no one who could get to that ball to stop it from going in the net. Yes, you hear the whistle and appear to see the ref running toward the penalty spot as if to call a penalty kick (maybe not). The ref then stops, turns and points to the central field spot signalling a goal. -Sorry, but when the ref after the game says he only blew the whistle to signal a goal he is blatantly not telling the truth. The timing of his whistle and his body language give him away.
dN

Federico Higuain had one of the more impressive debut's in the league this season.
-Oscar Boniek Garcia of Houston probably had the other great start to his MLS career this year.

dN

Tim Cahill got his first MLS goal. How many do you think he will have in his career?

AMERICANS IN EUROPE

Its a new season in England but nothing has changed for the two Americans at Aston Villa - still on the bench. What is Brad Guzan doing besides throwing away his pro career - this is his 5th season on the bench.

dN

Alejandro Bedoya scored his first goal for Helsingborg on a play that most referees would wave off and call a foul for dangerous play. See the video clip here.

dN

Three Americans scored goals in Denmark this weekend:
-Michael Parkhust got the game winning goal for Nordsjaelland this weekend!
-Clarence Goodson scored his first goal of the season for Brondby. See his nice goal right here. Completely unmarked at the back post.
-Conor O'Brien got on the scoreboard for SonderjyskE too.

dN

Matt Taylor this season playing for Preussen Munster in the German 3rd tier (3.Liga) scored an amazing 3 goals on Sunday as they knocked long time Bundesliga mainstay Werder Bremen out of the German Cup!

None of Fabian Johnson, Danny Williams or Joe Gyau dressed for Hoffenheim who were badly knocked out of the German Cup in the first round 4-0 by 4th division team Berliner AK. Embarrassing.

Toluca is still a perfect 5 for 5. Amazing. They have a 5 point lead at the top. -How are they doing this you ask? I was asking myself the same question so I went in search of answers. I found one quick. Their new coach this season is none other than one of the most successful coaches in the past decade of Mexican club soccer, Enrique Meza.
-Just look back at how much Meza improved Pachuca and Cruz Azul to see how much positive effect he has on his team.
