Some Soccer News for Tue Jun 12, 2012

STARTERS

Huge game for the USA on Tuesday night in World Cup qualifying, and you can only watch it on Pay Per View, no thanks to Traffic, at 9pm CT.
-Come watch it in the Twin Cities at the Sweetwater.

dN

After 2 rounds have been played in African World Cup qualifying only 2 of 40 teams have 6 points. Yes only 2 of 40. And Bob Bradley and Egypt are 1 of those two. Amazing!

IMPORTANT NEWS STORIES OF THE DAY

Paul Tenorio of the Washington Post sees a disturbing trend of young American players finding little to no playing time at MLS teams.

dN

USA national team youngster Terrence Boyd has left Borussia Dortmund and signed with Rapid Vienna in Austria.
-Seems like a step down to be leaving Germany for Austria, but he was not going to be seeing playing time at the German champions next season even though he was one of their top prospects.
-On the other hand, he will play, and he will be seen. So if he has big success he won't stay there long.

dN

John Molinaro of Sports Net with high praise for outgoing Toronto FC manager Aron Winter.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

World Cup Qualifying

The USA has their toughest road game of this group stage as they travel to Guatemala for a late game on Tuesday.

The USA will wear their 2nd jersey - navy blue with white sleeves, black sash and white numbers.

The USA has two problems they must overcome to have success on the road: 1) Who plays at leftback with injuries to all 3 players who have held the starting position in the past 3 games, and 2) Can a head coach with so little experience in his job (at any level, but especially at the qualifying level where this will be his second game ever) have his team ready to compete in Central America, a notoriously ugly venture for any team.

Guatemala will be desperate to claim 3 points after losing their first game at Jamaica on Friday.

Guatemala will also bunker in deep and look to hit the USA on the counter attack with some very fast players.

But the USA has not lost to Guatemala since 1988 going 12-0-5 since then. And the USA holds a 6-0-4 record in all World Cup qualifying games between the two.

Expect another slow and soggy field in Guatemala as it has been raining there and the forecast is for more during the game.

The 2 Guatemalan players most Americans will be familiar with are Carlos Ruiz who once starred for the LA Galaxy, is genuinely hated by all opponents for his antics, and currently plays in the Mexican 2nd division, and Marco Pappa who is a starting midfielder for the Chicago Fire.
-Pappa recently appeared in a big time Pepsi commercial with world superstars!

Clint Dempsey graces the cover of the Public News in Guatemala City on Monday:

US Soccer does a Q + A with goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Brent Latham of MLSsoccer.com writes that Jurgen Klinsmann sees Jozy Altidore as not being in good enough physical condition to be a starter.
-Isn't that the complaint we heard from his AZ coach at times too?

UEFA EURO 2012

It was a bit weird on Monday when I tuned in to ESPN's coverage on the usual channel 206 only to see that Alexi Lalas had been traded to Sky Sports who had taken over the coverage. Apparently the only topics allowed to be discussed on broadcasts in the United States were English Premier League related.
-Its interesting that as each big tournament goes by on ESPN their discussions don't get broader, they get narrower.

Round 1 of the Group Stage was completed today, and Russia, Denmark, Germany, Croatia and Ukraine are the teams with the full 3 points.
-The only team that truly choked was Netherlands.

Did you notice the fascinating starting lineups from Spain in 4-6-0 and Italy in 2-1-5-2 on Sunday? Wow!

Here is the only way to stop Andres Iniesta from tearing your team to shreds:

Anonymous Kyle said...

I don't want to be too pedantic, but Italy were definitely 3-5-2, with De Rossi playing the "what's old is new" position of sweeper. He was excellent, but having no CF certainly helped as he didn't have to turn much. For the tactically-inclined, the match will be remembered, even if National Teams inevitably integrated Club tactics about 2-4 years late.

I can't figure out who at ESPN chooses the commentary teams... the "first-teamers" of Lalas & Ballack, Darke & McMannaman have me reaching for the mute button. McMannaman prefaces everything with, "yeah". Have they ever got the formula right at one of these things?
