Some Soccer News for Mon Jun 4, 2012

STARTERS

The best way to spin a miserable scoreless friendly is like this: "HEY! CLEAN SHEET!"

dN

Steve Zakuani returned to the field for Seattle for the first time in approx 1 year since he suffer a horrendous broken leg. He played the first 45 min of a reserve game on Friday. Fantastic news.

dN

Kansas City's Livestrong Sporting Park will host the USA World Cup qualifier against Guatemala on Tue Oct 16! More details on tickets etc coming some day soon.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

NASL

Still unbeaten! The Stars went on the road for game 5 of a 7 game road trip and got another scoreless draw. AND they used a team of 90% reserves for the second week in a row to get the job done. At this point all of these guys look ready to step on the first team at 1 seconds notice too. Fantastic. Yes a goal and a win would be even better but given the circumstances we are in no position to complain as fans. On top of that this weeks opponent San Antonio and last weeks Tampa Bay both played their full starting 11. In case anyone was still wondering this Stars team has the ability to have a great season.

Match and Score:
-Sat Jun 2
San Antonio Scorpions 0-0 Minnesota Stars FC
Venue: Heroes Stadium

dN

It was announced over the weekend that if the Stars win at San Jose then they will host the winner of Seattle and Cal on Tue Jun 26 in the Quarterfinals.

Open Cup - Fourth Round
Match and Score:
-Tue Jun 5
San Jose Earthquakes v Minnesota Stars - 10:00pm CT

Stars fans will gather at the Sweetwater in St Paul to watch the game en masse.

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

Fabian Johnson suffered a calf strain in warm ups and Edgar Castillo went from not being on the game day roster to starting.
-No word yet on how severe Johnson's injury is.

World political leaders gathered at Camp David last night to take in the Canada v USA game, and were obviously enraptured as were all of us.

(Look at that ingrate Cameron cheering for Canada! Angela Mirkel is thinking, hmmmmm Joachim Lowe is better than Klinsmann.)

BUMMER OF THE DAY

I find this very surprising.

Joshua Mayers of the Seattle Times talks to Sounder head coach Sigi Schmid about the US Open Cup pairings, and Schmid comes off as a pathetic whiner.

Avi Creditor of Soccer By Ives talks to US Soccer President Sunil Gulati about Schmid's comments. Gulati is not amused.

Mayers later talks to Sounder GM Adrian Hanauer who tries to make his team come off a little better.

DID YOU KNOW?

James Montague of the New York Times looks at Bob Bradley's first official game in charge of Egypt after many training sessions and friendly matches. This is World Cup qualifying.
-Egypt got goals from Mahmoud Fathallah and Mohamed Zidan.
-Al Ahram has video highlights.

FACT OF THE DAY

Mexico beat Brazil 2-0 in a friendly on Sunday in Dallas on goals by Gio Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez.

Hey, I think that picture is actually from the PKs in the UEFA Champions League final! Or it's from an earlier match, as I had seen it posted after the CL final.
