Some Soccer News for Thu May 17, 2012

STORY OF THE DAY

This is some of the most powerful stuff I have ever seen written on soccer!
Wayne Drehs of ESPN with an incredible report (words, photos, audio & video) on Bob Bradley and his life in Egypt as the national team manager! I love this!
-Drehs also writes about Bradleys relationship with the teams star player Mohamed Aboutrika.
-Try and imagine this meeting:

STARTERS

Two trades in MLS today see both Juan Agudelo and Danny Califf moving to new teams. See details in MLS Player Transaction section below.

Yesterday in Germany a tie in a second leg playoff game sent Fortuna Dusseldorf up to the Bundesliga for next season, but losing Hertha Berlin has filed a complaint and want the game replayed. Late in the game, played in Dusseldorf, fans twice stormed the field and reigned down flares onto the field. The German federation has called an emergency meeting for Friday. It would be hard to see them not replay this game in an empty stadium.

dN

American centerback Zak Whitbread was released by Norwich today. He played a lot of minutes in a good Premier League season for the team, but he has also been plagued by injuries over the years.

dN

Smart Move! Vancouver will show the Champions League final on the jumbo-trons in BC Place stadium before the Whitecaps v Seattle game.

-Even more amazing is the inclusion of actual quotes from the legendary "silent one" Marcin from Chicago's Section 8.

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

US Soccer gives us video of the beginning of this very important training camp.

Check out the official blog of the team, and you can read funny stuff like this:
"During the team's empty stomach run this morning before breakfast, one group of players and coaches ran along a small river and came upon two guys in a fishing boat. (No, this is not the start of a joke ...)
As they passed, one of the fishermen hooked a fish and got it on the boat. Kyle Beckerman shouted, "Right on!" The fisherman held up the fish and yelled back, "Goaaaaaaaal!"
Wonder if that man knows Clint?"

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

Punishment

I think MLS needs to crack down on players abuse of referees, and to that effect Brek Shea gets to feel the brunt of it with a 3 game suspension and a fine after kicking a ball at and hitting an assistant! How was he not instantly ejected for that move??

Portland centerback Futty Danso gets a 1 game suspension for clubbing Houston's Calen Carr in the head during a breakaway. And Carr wears protective headgear due to previous concussions. I think Danso got off light.

Even worse. Chris Penso so screwed up that Futty Danso call that not only was there no foul whistled on the play, not only was Carr on a breakaway and denied a clear-goal-scoring opportunity and not only was Carr clubbed on the head. Danso then stayed down, faking an injury and the Chris Penso told the Dynamo they had to throw the ball out of play to Troy Perkins. Not only should Danso get at least two games, but the ref should never coach an MLS game again.
