Some Soccer News for Mon Apr 16, 2012

STARTERS

Some of the saddest soccer new in years is the death of Piermario Morosini of Livorno from a heart attack while play was going on around him Saturday. Our best thoughts go out to everyone in his life. The video clips out there are horrifying and I decided not to link to them.
-La Gazzetta of Italy with the full story. (In Italian)
-Including this image on the front of Gazzetta today that was taken at BMO Field in Toronto.

Its still not determined what Serie A will do with their match schedule after all the games were canceled last weekend. One possibility is that Week 33 will be moved to next weekend, so Week 34 can be played on Wednesday April 25.

dN

On a better note - Bolton player Fabrice Muamba was released from the hospital today and will continue his recovery at home.

dN

I have never been a fan of Rafa Marquez, but where does this guy get off treating other players like dirt over and over again? I really hope he pays a heavy price for his latest BS. See details in MLS Notes section below.

dN

Of course - USA Legends 2-0 Mexican Legends. Was there any other possible scoreline?

dN

Chris Rolfe has returned to MLS and the Chicago Fire after 3 years of not much in Denmark.
-Word is that he has clearance to play immediately.

MINNESOTA STARS FC

STORY OF THE DAY

Anticipating that both the Men AND Women's teams would make it to the Olympics this summer NIKE designed this "Where's Waldo" shirt for everyone to where. Sadly the USA Men are no where to be found on the London summer schedule, so we will have to suffer through these shirts in World Cup qualifying. Its a great idea to have matching uniforms for the women and men, I dig that, but it would be better if they were hideous.

Why do Alex and Clint have so much rage toward each other?

FACT: 23% lighter in weight than previous kits.

MLS MATCH NOTES

Bernardo Corradi scored a PK for Montreal and dedicated the goal to the Italian player who died of a heart attack on the field earlier in the day.

Kansas City's streak of not allowing a shot on goal ended at 335 minutes. What an extraordinary stat. But it did not really end is an explosion as Salt Lake only had the one shot on goal the entire game.

Blas Perez has been nothing short of great for Dallas - 3 goals and 5 assists on the season, and the team has 8 total goals. Meaning he has been involved in EVERY goal!

Seattle midfielder Oswaldo Alonso took yet another dive and his exaggeration got a yellow card for Colorado's Brian Mullan - I bet that there have been at least a dozen times in his MLS career that Alonso has exaggerated a clash like that.
-I remember so well when he did it while playing in the 2nd division too, and opposition fans hated him for it. He reacted very angrily toward any fans that hassled him.
-On this play you can tell he was faking injury due to how quickly he gets up to help teammates who are pushing and shoving after the call, this after he went down like he was shot.

TFC claimed attendance of over 18,000, and they very well may have sold that many tickets, but sadly I have never seen their stands so empty.

For the record: I think Toronto fullback Richard Eckersley is a hack.
-He paid the price on Saturday by keeping a Chivas player onside which resulted in a corner kick (Of course Eckersley screams obscenities at the ref claiming the player was offside!) which led to him losing track of the player he was marking Minda who headed home the games only goal. Instant karma's gonna get you!

Rafa Marquez of New York showed why he is one of the dirties players in the world - start watching this video clip at 5:15.
-Footage shown during the actual game is much worse than what is on that replay.
-The player he arm tackles and then kicks in the face suffered a broken collar bone.
-It was the 3rd time in this game that Marquez wrapped his arms completely around the same player on a corner kick, and you can hear the announcers talk about it at one point. And they are New York announcers so they are not being homers looking for the call.

The Chicago-Houston game was called off after 65 minutes due to crazy lightning drenched weather. The result will stand as a tie game.

It was far from complete but at times in the second half the LA Galaxy offense looked like the champions, and showed Portland how you score goals and pour on the pressure.
-Now about that LA defense....... oof.

So, you mention Rafa's evil work in NY. Yes, he really should be reprimanded. How about he is kicked out of the league. That would be good.

But you don't mention Olave's dive that got Sapong's goal disallowed or the bad offsides call on Boyd against the Gals? C'mon, the leagues refs are off to a very bad start this season. They are completely missing things and calling fouls and offsides when they didn't happen.

Appalling to say the least.
