Some Soccer News for Wed Jan 4, 2012

BREAKING NEWS: The NSC Minnesota Stars will ring in 2012 with the unveiling of a new logo, designed by our good Friend-In-Football Kevin Joseph, on Mon Jan 9 at 7:30pm at Brits Pub in downtown Minneapolis. See you there!

STARTERS

The 2012 NSCAA Convention will take place January 11-15 in Kansas City MO. Included in this will be the MLS SuperDraft on Thu Jan 12. du Nord will be there. Will you?

dN

Landon Donovan was in the starting lineup but Tim Howard stole the spotlight as he scored a goal for Everton! Yes he did! He put his foot through a slow roller just outside the 6 yard box and the wind took it the full length of the field and with one hop it went over the Bolton keepers head and into the net!!! See it right here.
-On the other hand Everton lost and you know Timmy would trade that fluke goal for a win every single time.

dN

Dallas has signed big strong Panama forward Blas Perez.
-If he can play as good as he always seems to play against the USA then MLS defenders will be in for a long season.
-On the negative side, this is his 15th team!

dN

Colorado is hoping to announce their new head coach on Thursday. That would be Dallas academy director Oscar Pareja.
-Nick Groke of the Denver Post with more on the story.

dN

Paul Tenorio of the Washington Post reports that MLS is trying to sign 15 year old prodigy Junior Flores.
-If you remember he lead the USA U17 team to a commanding performance last month a the Nike Invitational and a big win over Brazil.
-Dortmund is supposedly interested as well.

dN

Liverpool head coach Kenny Dalglish says that Luis Suarez's use of the word Negro to Patrice Evra was not a racial slur because Suarez's wife uses the word to the player regularly. So are we to suppose that Suarez's wife uses it to demean her husband? Its not the word, its how its used, what was the intent. Suarez intended it to irritate and insult Evra, not flatter. These arguments supporting Suaurez are a joke.

This is what's a joke:

That somehow Luis Suarez is an "unreliable witness" in the report.

It's a joke to get an 8 game ban for a his word vs his word situation.

Anonymous - So you have read this report? I have not. It has not been posted anywhere that I know of. I have seen it referred to, but no media company that I have seen has posted so much as an excerpt, or even quoted a line directly. Its all hearsay. What we do know is that Suarez insulted Evra at least 10 times and many of the 22 players on the field that day heard it. So "his word v his word" is not quite accurate. And if you lie about what you said then yes, you are an "unreliable witness."

the US v venezuela match on Jan 21 is showing up on espn3 as a match they will televise, so my assumption is it will also be shown on espn or espn2 live as well. Nothing listed for the Jan 25 match.

Brucio - I have not read it either, just going off multiple news articles, but I will read it now. I provided the link above.

I think Suarez should be punished, but 8 games is incredible harsh, as it seems Evra had taunted him first about being South American. I have a feeling the severity of the ban has more to do with making an example than the severity of the incident. John Terry's is MUCH worse.

My first impressions of skimming the report is that this is ALL unreliable. For example, in the section on Suarez's account of what happened, all of the Spanish they use is grammatically incorrect.

Anyways, I'll read through this thing (well most of it) and get back to you. Perhaps my opinion will change.

Also, in Suarez' version, his account goes through at least two or three translations in MULTIPLE languages, while Evra's is just in English. Things get misinterpreted all the time. Apparently, Suarez talked to Kuyt about what happened after the game in Dutch. They say Suarez speaks excellent Dutch, but as somebody (myself) who speaks excellent Spanish, with near fluidity, it's very easy to accidently misstate things all the time or give slightly different meanings. The guy who first heard Suarez's story claims he doesn't even speak fluent Spanish.

Anyways, I will actually read the whole thing now....

Also, here's a good post in the Liverpool forum about the language issues of the report:

http://forums.liverpoolfc.tv/showpost.php?p=6859329&postcount=1148

Ignoring the obvious bias of the post, there really are lots of language issues in regards to Spanish in the report. The Dutch I cannot comment on.
