Some Soccer News for Tue Jan 17, 2012

Today's du Nord post is dedicated to one of our heroes: Muhammad Ali born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr on this day, January 17, in 1942. Happy 70th my man!

STARTERS

I spent 2 great days last week in Kansas City at the NSCAA Convention, including taking in the MLS SuperDraft. I will have a write up on my trip in a couple of days. Thanks to everyone who made it so memorable especially Ryan Knapp of the NSCAA!

dN

du Nord at the Controls - Jan 17, 2012 - new music mix at Spotify.

STORY OF THE DAY

Eric Wynalda took to yet another forum last week, a talk he gave during the NSCAA convention, to unleash his hounds on US Soccer, MLS, Landon Donovan and other soccer related topics.

Charles Boehm and Jimmy LaRoue of the National Soccer Wire were there to capture Wynalda in all his glory. A transcript in PART 1 - and - PART 2 - and - PART 3.

The team is in the annual January training camp.

dN

Stuart Holden stopped by training camp. US Soccer Q & A-ed him.

dN

Jermaine Jones has been added to the USA roster for the this camp. Honestly though, I have a big problem with this addition. He is free to join up because he is serving an 8 game suspension for purposefully stomping on the foot of a player who he knew had broken bones in that foot, so what does the USA federation do about that punishment? They reward the player by bringing him into the the USA team. I think he should be suspended from the USA team for what he did as well. Yes, you can call me Johnny Righteous.

dN

Jose Garcia of the Arizona Republic has an interview with head coach Jurgen Klinsmann - PART 1 - and PART 2.

FIFASCANDALIZATIONINGS

David Conn of the Guardian looks ahead to a big day for FIFA to come clean or not on Thursday.

BIG EUROPEAN CLUB MATCHES

Yes this weekends Derby della Madonnina was ugly, but I leaped out of my seat going nuts when Diego Milito hit the winner for Inter!

-Sat Jan 14
Montpellier 1-0 Lyon - #2 beats #4
-Sun Jan 15
Milan 0-1 Inter - Derby della Madonnina sees Inter win for the first time in 3 years.
Marseille 2-0 Lille - two recent champs faced off! And last years champs lost!

BUMMER OF THE DAY

Only a bummer if there is truth to part of this rumor:

The USA is lining up a friendly v Brazil during the June 1st-5th international window, to be played in either Boston or DC.

With all the cities across the country that have great fans and are starved for a big time friendly these two cities would be near the bottom of my list until they get their MLS stadium acts together.

To my way of thinking US Soccer should go out of their way to avoid playing games in either place.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

The Chicago Fire announced Quaker Oats as their new front of shirt sponsor!

Do you need a fantastic video presentation? Yes you do.

Who is that guy on Quaker Oats package, and is the company still owned by Quakers?

DO YOU REALIZE

STAT OF THE DAY

Juventus remains the only team in all the major European leagues without a defeat this season, with 10 wins and 8 draws after 18 rounds.
-They currently have a 1 point lead at the top of Serie A.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Since the NASL has banned us fans from forevermore coming within 100 yards of the precious Soccer Bowl Cup trophy, Minnesota Star FC fan Andy Grosbeak Wattenhofer has just gone ahead and built his own!

OOF

LA Galaxy centerback Omar Gonzalez has had the surgery to repair his torn left ACL. He will be out of action for as long as 9 months.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Oh boy!

Robbie Findley with a monumental miss. Courtesy of 101 Great Goals!

I'm with you on the Jermain Jones thing. Dumb idea pulling him in.

if that friendly is in DC, it will be at Cooke/FedEx stadium, not actually in DC. So perhaps by depriving DC of the game it might add to fixing the situation. Might, in a small way.
