Some Soccer News for Tue Oct 11, 2011

STARTERS

The rumor going around is that one USA opponent in the November international friendly week will be France.

dN

South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane has committed one of the great blunders in modern football history! The national team played their final game in African Cup of Nations qualifying last Saturday thinking they only needed 1 point to qualify because they held a wide margin in the goal differential tie breaker if 2 other potential teams won their games. So South Africa coasted to a safe 0-0 draw and celebrated in the stadium with their fans. Buuuuuuuuuuut.... it turns out the tie breaker was head-to-head with teams you are tied with and South Africa lost out to Niger!!! The head coach did not know the rules of the qualifying! Oof!

STORY OF THE DAY

Bob Wickwire of the Seattle Times does a Q & A with the excellent Kasey Keller.

TEAM USA - EL EQUIPO DE TODOS

Alex Hoyt of The Atlantic transcribes Jurgen Klinsmann's own words on how he wants the USA to play soccer. Thanks to the Subparrookie for this one.

Ronald Blum of the AP with a great look at the Jurgen Klinsmann philosophy. (thanks to BQ for the link)
-I doubt Klinsmann's policies are much different at all from Bruce Arena's and Bob Bradley's, the difference is that we are hearing it from the coach, which he predecessors never really did. They kept everything internal.

George Vecsey of the New York Times on the dawning of the Klinsmann morning.

AFP reports that Chris Woods has been hired as the USA goalkeeper coach. He is also holds the same role at Everton with American keeper Tim Howard (and Marcus Hahnemann), and will continue in both jobs.

Michael Lewis of Big Apple Soccer reports on the search for an Olympic team head coach.
-It will not be assistant Martin Vasquez.

Lewis also writes about Klinsmann's search for young talent.

Lewis finishes with an article on the backup to Tim Howard.

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

CHICAGO FIRE

Len Zhiem of the Sun Times sees all 3 remaining Fire games as must-wins.

COLUMBUS CREW

Shawn Mitchell of the Dispatch looks at the Crew and sees a team preparing for a sprint to the finish line.
-Mitchell gives us the rundown of team injuries:
--Robbie Rogers (hamstring) resumed running yesterday after suffering a hamstring strain at Kansas City on Sept. 28
--Chad Marshall (ankle, hip) and Danny O’Rourke (knee, fitness): “It’s a professional rest week for (them),” trainer Dave Lagow said.
--Tommy Heinemann (back): Will not play in the reserve game after pulling a muscle against D.C. United on Oct. 2.
--Emilio Renteria (toe): Was stepped on during the United game but is expected to be ready for New England.
--Andres Mendoza: The Dozer is not injured but missed some time to attend to personal matters this week.
--Tony Tchani (right knee surgery) could be ready for the playoffs if the Crew qualifies. Tchani, acquired from Toronto on July 15, has not played for the Crew this season and had meniscus surgery in August. He is expected to begin training with the team next week.

This is also the end of covering the Crew for Shawn Mitchell. He is moving on to other things at the Dispatch. I can't thank him enough for all the great stories he has given us to link to. Best of luck to Shawn!
