STORY OF THE DAY

John Ourand & Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal are reporting that MLS is negotiating to sell approx 25% of their marketing company SUM for upwards of $150 million.

We have sensed for quite some time now that SUM was a real cash cow for the MLS team owners who control the company, and now we have confirmation.

STORY OF THE DAY 2

Gerry Whitman of IMSoccer News does a rare Q & A with US Soccer CEO/Secretary General Dan Flynn.

2011-12 CONCACACHAMPIONS

The pressure goes up another notch for MLS teams on Matchday 3 as their hunt for league playoff spots occupies their minds just as much as this tournament. And with relatively small squads how do they pick and choose so as to avoid burnout?
-Remember, no MLS Cup winner has been simultaneously been involved in the CONCAChamps.

FIFA SCANDALIZATIONINGS

The AP has words from another former bobo of Sepp Blatter who now says the FIFA leader is a dictator.
-Of course that's NOT what Chung Mong-Joon was saying a year ago before he was booted out of soccer. Luckily for us he has found his speaking voice. Bitter and jealous are two words that come to my mind when I read this stuff.
-Don't you love watching rats take chunks out of each other.

BIG EUROPEAN CLUB MATCHES

Matches & Scores:
-Sat Sep 10
Villarreal 2-2 Sevilla - neither claim supremacy in the battle of the Spanish also-rans Pt.1.
Valencia 1-0 Atletico Madrid - but someone did reign supreme in the battle of the Spanish also-rans Pt.2 And with Barca stumbling Val are actually in 2nd place.
Real Madrid 4-2 Getafe - not as easy a win as you might be expecting in the mini Madrid derby.
-Sun Sep 11
Istanbul BB 2-0 Galatasaray - the "Nobodies" are victorious in a minor Istanbul derby! Woo hoo for the little guy!

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

Seth Mydans of the New York Times takes us to the Dagestan region of Russia and to Makhachkala specifically to show us the new home of Samuel Eto.

Samuel Eto'o has played 2 games for Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia so far, and has scored a goal in each.

FACT OF THE DAY

If I heard the TV announcer correctly, San Jose got their first penalty of the season. Then saw it swatted away by Chicago's Sean Johnson in fairly easy fashion. Could that be correct?
-San Jose also finally ended a streak dating back to June 11 in which they had not won a single game!

OOF

Michael Lewis of Big Apple Soccer calls this year's New York Red Bulls team the biggest underachievers in MLS history!

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Did you ever imagine you would see Kasey Keller spin and literally throw the ball into his own net? Well it happened. Brutally embarrassing for such an accomplished goalkeeper. Just shows that EVERYTHING is possible. See the vid clip here.
-The announcer even thinks it went wide! And Salt Lake doesn't even celebrate. Its that bad for Keller!

Steve Davis of Sports Illustrated with five things we learned in Week 26.

dN

Charlie Davies of DC United was named Player Of The Week.

dN

Several teams near the bottom of the standings did a great job of playing spoiler as they did damage to teams dreaming of the playoffs:
-Toronto went to Columbus and beat the Crew for the first time ever.
-Chicago thought they had turned things around but San Jose stiffed them.
-Vancouver went to New York and sent the Red Bulls into further chaos and a record tying 15th tie of the season.
-New England beat Dallas by continuing the strong offense, and this time not letting the opponent back into the game.

dN

Luke Wileman of TSN saw big improvements for both Vancouver and Toronto this weekend.
