MINNESOTA SOCCER HISTORY NIGHT

The NSC Minnesota Stars, Minnesota Youth Soccer Association and Bricks Pub are pleased to present Minnesota Soccer History Night this Saturday, September 10, at NSC Stadium.

This free event will take place before the Stars' final home game against the Atlanta Silverbacks.

Former members of the Minnesota Kicks, Strikers and Thunder will take the stadium field for an exhibition game. Come watch Minnesota soccer legends like Alan Willey and Alan Merrick in action as the Stars, MYSA and Bricks commemorate more than 35 years of professional soccer history in Minnesota. The stadium gates open at 5:30 for the 5:45 p.m. event. A ticket to the Stars' game at 7:30 is not required for admission to the event as all patrons will need to leave the stadium following the event.

The first 1,000 fans through the gates to the Stars game (gates open at 7) will receive a free Minnesota Soccer History Night autograph poster courtesy of MYSA.

STORY OF THE DAY

As recently as two seasons ago the 3 daily newspapers in Toronto could not get enough of writing about Toronto FC, but with their complete lack of improvement through 5 long seasons the editors of those papers have sent their writers elsewhere to find stories. The team has not played a game since Aug 27, and there has barely been a whisper in print since the post game writeups. The Sun's top soccer headline today read "Beckham cuts his own hair." And thats about as close to TFC as they got all week long.

None of them mentioned Saturday's rivalry game in Columbus in today's editions. Hopefully tomorrow will at least have cursory previews.

2011-12 CONCACACHAMPIONS

Matchday 3 begins next Tuesday, Sep 13.

Martin Renzhofer of the Salt Lake Tribune attributes recent American team success in the tournament to Real Salt Lake and their run in the tournament last spring.
-Can someone remind me which Mexican team it was that RSL beat on the road last season?

FIFA SCANDAL - JACK WARNER

Trinidad Newsday has lots of quotes from Jack Warner laying all his underhanded problems into the lap of his former runnin & gunnin buddy Chuck Blazer. Warner talks about lots money, but never tells us why it was paid in the first place.
-Jack says everyone warned him that Blazer was bad news, but.......

You can be pretty much guaranteed that for every dollar a guy like Blazer may have skimmed off the top of CONCACAF, Warner had already skimmed off more than his fair share.

dN

The Press Association talks to Warner who says FIFA is now out to destroy the Caribbean Football Union and all its member countries. Via the Guardian.
-Jack has some barely cloaked racist comments too.

NOT GOOD

Seattle's backup keeper Terry Boss who had a very strong showing down in Monterrey Mexico a couple weeks ago will miss the rest of the season due to a concussion. That is terrible news.

Will untested rookie Josh Ford become the backup to Kasey Keller?

I would expect the team to try and find an experienced keeper to sign asap.

CANADA

"Our young players do not watch soccer. Our players do not immerse themselves in the game. They do not watch live games; they do not read about the game in newspapers or online; they are not inundated with news of transfer speculation and match reports summarizing the latest victory or defeat. The only time they think about the game is when they go to one of their own practices or games."

Jason De Vos of the CBC tells a great story of taking members of his youth club to the Canada game last week. Great reading from an excellent advocate of the game.

A story that rings true just the same here in America.
