DaMarcus Beasley scored a goal (with his head no less) that proved to be the game winner over defending champs Pumas. He got a yellow card for what I can only assume is bad dancing in the celebration.

ENDERS

What do these 5 people have in common?
-Jimmy Banks
-Neil Covone
-Eric Eichman
-Paul Krumpe
-John Stollmeyer

The correct answer is that they were all on the USA 1990 World Cup team. Did you know that. Do you know anything about any of them? Had you even heard of them before?

9 Comments:

Anonymous Doug said...

I knew of Stollmeyer and Krumpe before 1990. Stollmeyer was a terrific player at Indiana University and Krumpe was a star at UCLA. He was on the 1985 team that won the NCAA tournament 1-0 over American. I saw that game in Seattle's Kingdome and the damn thing went EIGHT overtimes. It was horrible to watch but unforgettable.

I remember the day George John was drafted in the Super Draft very clearly.

Why?

Because Alexi Lalas said, "George John? Who is this guy? That is quite the stretch for a player of his caliber that high in the Super Draft."

HAHAHA!

I knew Neil Covone is a lawyer in Florida, and that the other four all actually played for the U.S. a fair amount. Banks was a pretty decent left sided player whereas Eichman was a bruising defender. Krumpe and Stollmeyer generally have the distinction of being two of the harder guys for me to remember on that squad.

Can it really be "shocking to everyone" for SKC to be in a playoff spot? Look at the seasons for each team that took a long, long road trip to start the season so that their stadium could be ready. They've ALL made the playoffs comfortably. That long homestand is as helpful as the long road trip is harmful.
I can see that it's 2nd in the East as surprising, but given how weak the east is, it's not that great a feat.

I am no mental giant, but here is my comment...

Why the constant sarcastic tone towards Sporting KC? Is it possible that the development of Zusi and Bressler, the signing of Collin, a career year from Myers, and the time it takes for a team with many new faces to find cohesion is more responsible for their fantastic run than playing these games at home?

We should be thankful that a team in the best SSS in the country is doing well, and attracting fifteen to eighteen thousand fans per game...in the midwest, where the game needs to grow and can sometimes be 4th or even 5th on the sporting landscape.

Hatin' is bad.

great comments from everyone.

"Why the constant sarcastic tone towards Sporting KC?"

Where? I know I am a very sarcastic guy, and that can cause people to confuse my sincerity. But what are you talking about?

Playing at home makes ALL the difference for every single team.

I am not demeaning anyone. Its half of each teams yearly schedule.

I simply pointed out that on Jun 8 they had not played a home game yet and were in last place. Now they have played a full slate of home games just like everyone else and they are in 7th place.

I was not being sarcastic. Just factual.

End of story.
