The only way Dallas is going to be able to fill the center of their defense left by the departure of George John is to sign Paul Ringo.

UEFA says Carlos Bocanegra is eligible to play for Rangers in Europa League against Maribor who had filed an official complaint that he did not have a proper work visa for last weeks game.

dN

13 Americans are eligible to play in the Europa League tomorrow.

dN

With players in Spain still on strike for a new collective bargaining agreement and the cancellation of a second week of game looming, the Italian league finds itself in the same situation with their first round set to begin this weekend.
-Could we really see players from 2 of the biggest leagues in the world on strike this weekend? Its very possible.

dN

I usually don't spend any time at all commenting on FIFA rankings, but how can Netherlands be the new world #1 without winning any major tournament and Spain not losing any game that mattered?

dN

Missed this yesterday: American Sean Hurd also worked the U20 World Cup final as an assistant. Congrats to Sean.

ON THIS DAY

A not so special day for me:

@JoeLeyba reminds me that on this day in 2006 I got maced as I tried to break up a fight after my Minnesota Thunder put an unholy beatdown on the Kansas City Wizards (in suburban KC) in the US Open Cup.

A dumb local yahoo had been taunting MN fans all night long, then tried to sucker punch a kid as the game ended. I jumped in to gung fu his tattooed ass into submission, but the Filth gave me the hardcore pepper spray to the eyes for my efforts.

To this day I don't know who was the bigger punk, the imbecile who tried to start the fight or the junior lawman who overreacted to a situation that was being defused.

But at least we won!

My Thunder beat Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards back to back to back that year in the Open Cup to reach the Semifinals where we lost to the Galaxy 5-2 in LA. Helluva run.

By the way, getting maced is waaaaaaaaaaaay more painful then I ever thought it would be.

STORY OF THE DAY

David Conn of the Guardian digs in to the maze of agents/handlers/leeches surrounding Carlos Tevez.

And what do you all think of the new clean cut look for Carlos?

2011-12 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

I've noticed that Mexican newspapers refer to this tournament as the Concachampions. I like that, and think I am going to use it.

Seattle takes the reserves to Monterrey and becomes the 2nd American team in a week to win in Mexico after a lifetime of fruitlessness. Amazing.
-Seattle got the champs from Monterrey at the right time too as they have now lost 3 of 4 in all competitions since their new season started. And it didn't hurt that the referee waved off 3 very possible Monterrey penalty cries.
-It was fun to see another classic Pat Noonan assist to Alvaro Fernandez for the game winner. It brought back a lot of memories of what Noonan and Taylor Twellman did on a weekly basis in the New England Revolution hay-day.

Colorado had their chance to travel and steal 3 points as well, they just could not hold on for the full 90. Losing that tying goal in the dying moments of the game in Honduras to Espana.

Video highlights from all the games. Via CONCACAF.

MATCH FIXING IN TURKEY

The Turkey Football Federation has announced that league winner Fenerbahce will NOT be allowed to play in the UEFA Champions League this season!
-Trabzonspor will be the Turkish team to take their place in the group stage.

But we are still waiting to hear about any other punishments for all the accusations of match fixing that have been reported for the past month.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"This new home isn’t just an improvement, it’s a different world. The fan experience has morphed from high school baseball game to European football match."
-Kansas City Star article on Sporting Kansas City's magnificent new home stadium Livestrong Sporting Park. (see the team section below for the full article)

QUESTION OF THE DAY

My friend The Superrookie wants to know:

Why do TV commentator keep referring to Seattle Sounders defensive midfielder Oswaldo Alonso as "under rated?"

If they all love him so much then there is no way he is still under rated. They all "rate" him. End of story. So please stop saying it.

WHO KNEW?

Maybe I was just sleeping when this news was happening.....

I have been wondering where the influence of Oscar De La Hoya has been in the Houston Dynamo this season. I mean, he does own half the team, but we never hear anything from him.

Well, it turns out he has spent the past few months getting his personal life in order.

In late May he entered a rehab center for cocaine and alcohol addiction.

Checking his Twitter feed I saw a post the other day that simply read: 100 days

I hope sobriety remains part of his life, and his influence over the soccer scene in Houston can grow.

Good luck Oscar!

FACT OF THE DAY

The Mega-Rich get Mega-Richer!

Manchester United has signed a deal worth US$16.5 million per year for DHL to splash their name on the front of the team's PRACTICE UNIFORM!

While i don't disagree with you about the spain ranking - i can't see the classico rivalry being good for the national team. they're ready to kill each other when it's a club game, and all hugs and kisses when they wear the same color? doubt it.
