Some News for Tue Aug 9, 2011

STARTERS

Vancouver has hired Carolina RailHawks head coach Martin Rennie to take over their team for next season. Watch video of the official introductory press conference here. He will finish this season with Carolina, and Tom Soehn will finish this season running the Caps, then he will step back upstairs. Interesting move. Rennie has been a very good coach at the teams he has previously been in charge of.
-FYI: Carolina has qualified for the NASL playoffs with 9 regular season games still to be played. Amazing.
-As some have pointed out, the Caps kept their very successful coach from the second division Teitur Thordarson for their step up to MLS, but fired him just 2 months into the season. So why are they hiring another coach with a similar resume and again without MLS experience.
-Let's compare their North American coaching resumes:
TT:
Van 08 - Champion
Van 09 - Final
Van 10 - Semifinal
MR:
Cleve 07 - Semi
Cleve 08 - Champion
Caro 09 - Quarter
Caro 10 - Final

STORY OF THE DAY

Charles Gooch of the Kansas City Star writes about the excessive amount of Red Cards that Sporting KC has received this season.
-The team's backers blame the referee's. Their opponents see no such thing. But as a neutral I see a team that loses their focus too many times during a game - a mental discipline problem.

And I am still trying to process that pathetic dive Omar Bravo of KC took last weekend and pretended that Pat Noonan had head butted him. It was infuriating. Will he get extra punishment from the league for it?

MATCH FIXING IN ITALY

Verdicts were handed out today and Serie A club Atalanta (just promoted) has been docked 6 points to start the season
-Goalkeeper Marco Paoloni has been banned for 5 years
-Team captain Cristiano Doni has been given a 3 1/2 years suspension.
-Thomas Mandredini formerly of Atalanta has been given a 3 year suspension.

I must admit that Italian justice has always baffled me. If Atalanta used match fixing to get promoted then why would there punishment be anything less than instant relegation?

The biggest name in the scandal was former Lazio & Bologna great Beppe Signori who has been banned from all football for 5 years.

Many more teams, players and officials from lower divisions have been punished as well.
