STARTERS
There is still no agreement between players and Spain's Primera over a new collective bargaining agreement, so you can expect the players to go on strike and boycott this weekend's first round of games.

FIFA SCANDAL

STORY OF THE DAY
This has been brought to my attention, and I thought you all might be interested.
There is a fairly new authentic Nike/US Soccer USA men's team t-shirt for sale with a version of the American flag and the word Indivisible.
But there is a problem with the design of that shirt.
This is how the shirt looks now:
It could simply look like this (photoshopped):
The problem is that on the original the flag is positioned wrong. And not as in someone doesn't like it, but wrong as in legally wrong. Literally.
Section 7.i. of "The United States Flag: Federal Law Relating to Display and Associated Questions" reads as follows: "When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street."
The story behind the shirts being made at all is that Nike offered to make the shirts for the American Outlaws supporters group for the Gold Cup.
However the American Outlaws did not see the design until it was already being manufactured. When they realize the mistake they felt it was made too late to be rectified. And they went ahead and used the shirts anyway. They "currently have no plans to sell the shirt."
Buuuuuuuut US Soccer is still selling the shirt. And when the problem with the shirt was pointed out to US Soccer this was their response: "While the latest U.S. Soccer t-shirt designed by Nike uses the U.S. flag for inspiration, the designer intended the artwork to be emblematic of the flag but not an exact representation. When presenting the flag across other platforms, such as at events or on apparel, we adhere to the guidelines you cited in your email."
So you the reader can decide for yourself what you think of the issue. Is it a problem or not? Should they keep selling the shirt or not?

I think US Soccer needs to respect the flag and only sell a correct version. But...US Soccer doesn't want to give up the revenue, or admit that it's made a mistake. So, they continue to sell the wrong version. I think American Outlaws should also pressure US Soccer to give them away, or perhaps sell them for a reduced amount, and donate all the proceeds to a charity.
Bruce:
I know all five were part of the 1990 Cup squad. So, they all have in common at one point during their careers wearing far too tiny shorts?
i would agree with anyone who says the flag should be displayed properly. however, to the best of my knowledge, that isn't a flag on the shirt. the "flag" says,"indivisible." it also doesn't have 50 stars. sooo, the law doesn't really apply to it.
nike sucks. but just not here.
While I agree that the "corrected" shirt should be used, technically the shirt isn't wrong or illegal.
Though we "see" a flag in the shirt, the flag of the United States of America is not on the shirt. There are blue stripes on a red background [shirt]. Our nation's flag has red and white stripes with a blue field covered with 50 white stars.
Bruce, thanks for bringing this to light. I don't know if it will force or encourage any accountability, but it's a well communicated account of the story. Bravo Zulu.
I wonder if Ricardo Salcido likes transvestite prostitutes as much as Carlos Salcido.
Dang I went and looked up flag codes and see a whole slew of violations being carried out by American soccer fans. Did you know that American Outlaws shouldn't be using the flag as a bandana or that the flag should not be unfurled before a game or after a goal because the flag should never be horizontal or flag.
Also and this is for all that silly folks who complain about Gold Fringe flags, there is nothing that states the gold fringe flag is a federal gov't flag only or indicating martial law of that the Constitution does not apply in the area a gold fringe flag is flying. neat.
