dN

LET'S TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT

On a sad note, the wife of New England Revolution owner Robert Kraft, Myra Kraft, died this morning. Our condolences to the family, friends and whole organization.

STORY OF THE DAY

Tim Cronin of Chicago's Southtown Star says soccer has NOT arrived on the big stage in our country, and its not going to any time soon either.

MATCH FIXING IN TURKEY

"As a result of the ongoing investigation, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Trabzonspor and Mersin Idmanyurdu could be relegated from Turkey’s top league."

The annual season opening Super Cup game, this year Fenerbahce v Besiktas, has been postponed indefinitely, and the start of the SuperLig season, supposed to be Aug 5, will be determined by this weekend.
-I don't see how they can possibly start the season right now.

Hurriyet reports that a Fenerbahce vice-chairman and 2 other club officials have turned on the team's chairman and will assist law enforcement pursuing match fixing claims against the club.

Hurriyet also tells us about strongly worded official statements from Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor that attack the allegations against them, the rush to judgement, and each other.

Not Turkey based but...

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Why is it that two of the MLS teams with some of the lowest average attendances this season, Dallas at 13,241 (4th lowest) and Columbus 10,846 (1st lowest), are both owned by the Hunt family?

We all know about their late father Lamar Hunt's love of the game, and we are told the sons have the same passion. So why are they near the bottom this year, and consistently near or at the bottom over the past several years?

The league average is up over 1500 per game, or 9.3%. Meanwhile Columbus is down 25.9%.

On the better side Dallas is up 22.4%, but they only started at 10,815 from last season.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

Owen Gibson of the Guardian reports that the English Premier League plans to have goal line technology in place for the 2012-13 season.

FACT OF THE DAY

Five players on the North Korean World Cup team have tested positive for steroid use. Hey, they got hit by lightning remember! Test for that?!?! Or something. But lay off them North Korean gals. They have a tough enough life without FIFA bugging them about performance enhancing drugs. I bet their beloved leader takes em too, and it hasn't hurt him any.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Not a video, but an interview with THE king of American soccer video - Dave Brett Wasser.

The Real Football does a Q & A with Dave Brett the uncontested biggest and best archivist of video on American soccer.

Wasser's website is must viewing as well.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

Jozy Altidore makes it official with AZ's technical director Earnie Stewart:

And Jozy on the field with his #12 shirt:

Here is the full article (in Dutch) on his signing, from the teams website, including several more photos!

The team is coached by Gertjan Verbeek who was Michael Bradley's coach at Heerenveen, which was very successful for the player.

so, if all those Turkish teams get relegated, Adu's team either goes up to the 1st or gets better competition in the 2nd.
