STORY OF THE DAY

The biggest regular season game ever played in MLS went to the visitors from the north.

THE FIFA SCANDAL STORY NEVER ENDS

"The whistleblower ... now says she entirely fabricated that story of bribes paid by the Qatar bid, and other corruption allegations, because she wanted to "hurt" the bid after they decided to move her from her job. She said she was "furious" at the bid's suggestion that she was not handling the international media competently, and, "acting irrationally", decided to make up the corruption stories "to show them I could control the international media".

David Conn of the Guardian reports that the person who claimed to have knowledge of bribery for votes on the 2022 World Cup now claims to have no knowledge of any bribery, and made it all up.
-There is a website called Qatar Whisteblower where the statements previously made are all recanted.

TEAM USA AT THE 2011 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

WWC Germany 2011 has moved to the Semifinals.

The USA pulled off an incredibly dramatic comeback to beat Brazil and advance to the Semifinals against France on Wed Jul 13.

Brazil gave the USA an own goal in the 2nd minute as the USA plundered the goal. Then the USA hung on until a controversial foul led to a red card and penalty kick for Brazil. The first PK taker had her shot saved by Hope Solo, but the referee deemed that the USA had encroached on the shot. On the retake Brazil tied the game. The 90 minutes ended tied and the game went into Added Extra Time which saw Brazil dominate until they got the go ahead goal. Then they stopped playing. The USA poured it on to little success until the last of 3 minutes of stoppage time when Abby Wambaugh scored on a header off a desperation cross. In the Penalty Kick Shootout Brazil looked very nervous and on the third kick Hope Solo made the save that won the game for the USA.

Matches & Scores:

QUESTION OF THE DAY

When was the last time that Chelsea and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien was healthy?

Chelsea reports that Essien needs surgery to repair a torn knee ligament and meniscus. They say he could be ready in 6 months.
-Another 6 months?

OF COURSE THAT"S WHAT HAPPENED

Less than 2 weeks ago we were all shocked to hear that New York had shipped Dwayne DeRosario to DC in exchange for Dax McCarty. Then this past weekend the two teams met up on the field, and of course DDR scored the games only goal. Did you really see it coming out any other way?

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

This ought to stir up some trouble: Soccer America does a Q & A with USA U17 Residency Academy head coach Wilmar Cabrera.

FACT OF THE DAY

22 MORE people were arrested in Turkey today in connection to match fixing. The biggest name today was the chairman of club Trabzonspor.
-The biggest name previously arrested is Aziz Yildirim, chairman of to Turkey's biggest and most decorated club Fenerbahce. He is being charged with not only match fixing but also racketeering.
-The investigation is centered on the season just completed.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Anjali Nayar of the CBC is in Germany for the Women's World Cup and wrote this interesting article on the cultural aspects of Muslim's and women playing soccer.

DU NORD PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND OTHER STUFF

Oh yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah - Its Nick LaBrocca of Chivas USA with a great goal to win in midweek and another for a tie game over the weekend. That's 4 points for Nick. What you got?
-And you can add him to the list of players that Toronto has given up on that plays great once they leave.

HIGHLIGHTS

Some video highlights from the weekend courtesy of MLS:

-Mauro Rosales of Seattle makes a pass look so simple, yet it takes pure perfection, and this one leads to a Fredy Montero tap in goal.
-Becks with a classic free kick that goes past everyone and into the goal untouched for a LA game winner.
-Nick LaBrocca of Chivas USA scored goal #10,000 in MLS history. Easy peasy.
-Conor Casey of Colorado scored his 6th goal in the past 7 games. And his latest was his typical combination of hard work and perfect technique.
-Smooth quick passes and an ice cold killer finish by Camilo for a Vancouver goal.
-Dwayne DeRosario now of DC stabs his former team NY in the neck. Not literally. But he did torch the guy he was traded for, Dax McCarty, in the process.
-And from midweek play, my favorite of the week, Juan Agudelo of New York moving away from goal, goes up high, twists his body around and rockets a header into the top 90.

For those of us old enough to remember the original NASL, one of the most shocking stories of the weekend was the untimely death, at 51, of Mark Peterson, an outstanding American forward for the Seattle Sounders of the early 1980s. He was born 20 years too soon and almost certainly would be a huge star today.

Looks like the Beckham's have an anchor baby. Thought we would get rid of them sooner than later. Oh well, I guess the USWNT should keep an eye on her and cap tie her as soon as possible.
