Some News for Wed Jun 29, 2011

STARTERS

There will be 4 MLS games shown on ESPN2 this weekend - 1 Saturday, 1 Sunday and 2 Monday. How weird is that?

dN

I will be a guest this Sun Jul 3 on Vuvuzela - The World Soccer Show at 10am CT from WBCB in Levittown NJ, hosted by Eric Nash. Tune in to 1490am if you are a local, or dial em up on the web at WBCB1490.com.

dN

TFC announced the signing of two well known international players this afternoon, both to Designated Player contracts: 34 year old German defensive-midfielder Torsten Frings from Werder Bremen and 32 year old Dutch forward Danny Koevermans from PSV Eindhoven. These guys could definitely help if they are ready to play.
-Frings had a solid typical season for him last season, while Koevermans had a poor season by his standards.

dN

The USA U17 team will take on Germany in the World Cup on Thu at 3pm CT. Tune in to ESPN3.com for coverage.

STORY OF THE DAY

“We’ll have something to say later this week.”
-Sunil Gulati - President of US Soccer

Jack Bell and Andrew Das of the New York Times with the latest on Bob Bradley rumors.

Marc Zeigler of the San Diego Union Tribune with a mini-treatise on the state of the USA men's national team. It ain't pretty.

Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe reflects on the Gold Cup final and the bigger picture of Team USA, featuring a very interesting quote from Bruce Arena.

Nick Green of the Daily Breeze shares his views on the bigger picture of the men's team as well.

WHY NOT!

My Thoughts on the current state of the USA mens national team:

Bob Bradley has instilled a certain mentality of playing the game within "the group", as he likes to say, and If find that the word "managing" is a good description of his style. Not as in "I am the manager." but rather in "We can keep a good grasp on the situation."

Meaning that the team on the field does what it has to do to try and win. But nowhere in the plans is there room to attack, breakdown and dominate another team from beginning till end. (I am not referring to attacking with the ball, or breaking down a defense with a nice pass, but in the bigger picture.)

Intimidation, positive attitude, confidence - all gone out the window.

The idea is to keep the game contained right in front of you. Simple boxes, easy movements, team effort and an honest days work. Managing.

"I thought we managed most situations during the game well. Others not so well."

Its also ego-less football.
Manage-the-game-from-within football.
React to whats-going-on-around-you football.
Take-what-the-other-team-gives-you football.
Painful-to-be-a-fan football.

Its getting old.
Like the air the next morning inside a previously smoke filled bar.

And I am one of the people who defend Bob Bradley.

Zeigler's treatise may not have been pretty, but it was damn well-written and argued. That kind of penetrating analysis is rare in putatively mainstream US soccer journalism. Cheers for the linkage...

Bradley will go. No question.
However, the real problem is that we lack younger talent to replace Donovan, who has lost a step.
Jermaine Jones is average at best.
Bradley too. adu hasnt panned out. neither has altidore. Agudelo is too raw.

holden and dempsey the only two "world class" field players on the team.

when we put an emphasis on athletic ability rather than creativity, how else are you going to play? has the US regressed? or did Mexico improve? and if the answer is that we need to improve at a lower level to create technically sound/gifted players...how long is that going to take? in time for the next world cup?
