STORY OF THE DAY

Andrew Dampf of the AP reports on 16 arrests that were made yesterday in Italy for alleged match fixing, including an attempt to influence the outcome of Inter v Lecce on Mar 20. Former Lazio star Giuseppe Signori was one of the people arrested. Via the Miami Herald.

JACK WARNER/SEPP BLATTER/FIFA ODDITIES

Most of Wednesday at the annual FIFA meetings have been taken up by country after country pounding the crap out of England - They who dared stand up alone and make accusations of corruption. Oof.

The vote for FIFA President went like this:
208 votes
203 cast
186 for Blatter
-Leaving 17 blanks, and 5 no shows

The Guardian has held a running blog all week long, and today's has been the most England-centric for them.
Here is a perfect example: "It looks like England is always complaining so please I say will you leave the Fifa family alone! We always have attacks from England. Their journalism is more busy lying than telling the truth."
-Julio Grondona of Argentina (you might also know him as Maradona's latest enemy)

More from Grondona:
"Yes, I voted for Qatar, because a vote for the US would be like a vote for England. And that is not possible."
-What the frick did we ever do to you buddy?!?!

The Guardian also has this fantastic picture from Blatter's speech today:

FIFA's big new and improved plan is to have all 208 federations vote for future World Cup placements, instead of just the 24 executive members.
-Yes, there are now 184 more people to bribe.

I don't see much change coming from any of the turmoil of the past week. And my suspicion is that only 1 person is going to fall in the end. And that person will be Chuck Blazer, the guy who set it all off in the first place. FIFA will conduct their investigation into Jack Warner and Mohamed Bin Hammam, discover that there was just a misunderstanding, and welcome the two back with open arms. Leaving Blazer naked in the street. Not a pretty site. There is no chance that Jack will ever trust Chuck again. Their love affair is over for good.

Paul Kelso of the Telegraph looks at where FIFA has been in the past week, and where it could be headed in the near future.

IMSoccer News with more on the alleged bribe given to the Puerto Rican federation.

The German federation appears to be calling for an investigation into the voting for the 2022 World Cup.
-I think its highly doubtful that this will lead to much of anything.

From now on all problems within FIFA will be dealt with by the newly formed Solution Committee. Wow.

After the election Sepp Blatter held another press conference. See it here.
-Don't you wish videos came with smell-o-vision? I bet it smells like old sweat socks in there.

CONCACAF

Simon Evans of Reuters reports that acting CONCACAF President Lisle Austin has sent out yet another press release saying that Chuck Blazer has very much been fired no matter what anybody else says. Touche.

Mark Bisson of World Football Insider talks to Chuck Blazer today about the stability within CONCACAF at the moment.

TEAM USA

Gold Cup

The team is training in Cary NC.

dN

There is only one acceptable outcome for the USA team at this upcoming tournament. Win it. Then they get a spot in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil. If they do not win it, then I think its time for a change at the top. I defend Bob Bradley as strongly as anyone out there, but results are results are results. Git 'er done Bob!

PICTURE OF THE DAY

The FIFA presidential election ballot:

I wonder if this is what ballots look like in Cuba, Zimbabwe, North Korea or Iran.

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

We now know that there are still soccer fans in the New England area.

Last weekend saw the LA Galaxy come to town and the Revs drew over 21,000 to the game. When was the last time a regular season game not attached to double header drew that many.

And this coming weekend the USA is playing Spain at Gillette Stadium and at least 60,000 are expected.

So its up to you New England Revolution ownership to start taking your team seriously and give your hard working staff and hard core fans the respect they deserve - support this team with real money.

Not to mention supporting your coach with real money for a real roster.

FACT OF THE DAY

With Inter's win in the Coppa Italia last weekend, midfielder Esteban Cambiaso has now won 23 various titles in his professional career. Amazing.

Glazer gave them video evidence which is why they are going to hire an "expert forensic person" to make sure it's real. This is not even close to being over.

More here then people are seeing. :)

To make sure it's real? I think you meant to say "to find some way to disprove it". You'd think that if some sort of transaction was occurring involving Puerto Rico that perhaps one could get US law enforcement involved on some sort of sting operation.

This whole thing is going to play out the same damn way it always does unless someone else is willing to stick their heads out. Kleptocracy!

It would be extra fun if someone like Malcom Glazer got tangled up in all of this!

I think JW7 meant Blazer.
