Some News for Thursday Jun 9, 2011

Dear Leader El Brucio is off to Kansas City for tonight's opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, adjacent to Kansas International Speedway, so you are stuck with me, Joe the Curmudgeon. By the way, Bruce will be unveiling his Pièce de résistance, a beautiful bronze statue in front of the Cauldron entrance:

But seriously, Sporting Kansas City makes their first home field appearance in 2011, taking on fellow cellar dwellers in the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Fire. Kickoff is set for 10pm ET/9pm CT/8pm MT/6pm PT and you can watch the action on ESPN2 or ESPN3.com in the US, and TSN2 in Canada.

You can read more on the game at MLSsoccer.com and there are heaps of other content as well.

Also, enjoy this massive article by Adam Spangler over at This Is American Soccer, for "A Behind The Scenes Oral History of Soccer in Kansas City"

On November 18, 2010, a Major League Soccer team changed its name. One minute they were the Kansas City Wizards. The next, they were Sporting KC. Of course it’s never that simple.

This is that story.

Enjoy the game tonight and enjoy the new fancy-pants stadium!

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will also host the Gold Cup matches on June 14 - Canada v Panama and Guadalupe v United States. More on the Gold Cup below.

In the only MLS game on Wednesday, Real Salt Lake went into Columbus and lost 1-2. RSL took the early lead with a goal in the 7th minute by Jamison Olave off a corner kick. 'lumbus answered with a penalty kick in the 76th minute (a weak call IMHO) and Josh Gardner scored the game winner in the 82nd minute off a deflection that caught RSL keeper Nick Rimando off balance. RSL has lost their mojo? No kidding. Work ethic of other's questioned by one player. Couple of thoughts... RSL on short end of officials decisions at times... time equalizes every thing. No downside with Rimando as he's keeping them in the game...
