Some News for Thu Jun 23, 2011

STARTERS

As you would expect the Gold Cup final is sold out at over 91,000 for Saturday's huge USA-Mexico showdown.

dN

Huge congrats goes out to Santos for winning the South American - Copa Libertadores - championship last night.

THE FIFA SCANDAL STORY NEVER ENDS

Owen Gibson of the Guardian gives us more on the leaked FIFA ethics report that damned Jack Warner into resigning.

Marina Hyde of the Guardian reminds us that just because Jack Warner is gone there is still plenty of rotten meat inside FIFA.

TEAM USA

Gold Cup

There I was sitting at my fave soccer bar The Sweetwater watching the USA battle Panama when I was blown away by the rapture that followed the entrance of Freddy Adu on to the field. The love for this guy no matter how many failures he has is very surprising. He is still seen as the savior. Wow. And those folks got what they wanted when the lil Baby Jesus made that long pass to the Baby Jesus who crossed the ball to the back post for the Anti-Christ to finish. Divine indeed.

Surreal moment #2: The USA & Mexico shared a chartered flight from Houston to Los Angeles today. They SHARED the plane!

Jozy Altidore's hamstring injury will knock him out of action for 4-6 weeks. That is not good for a player who is looking for a new team.

Jose De Jesus Ortiz again of the Chron reports that members of the Brazil World Cup Committee were at the game and were very impressed with Reliant Stadium.
-They should be, its considerably better than anything they have, and we have another large handful just like it around the country.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Final

Santos are the Copa Libertadores winners!

Pele was parading around on the field after the game celebrating with his nearly life long team.

They last won the CL in 1962 & 63 when Pele was the undisputed leader.

This title was won with that little 98 lbs kid with the raccoon glued to top of his head - Neymar - as their leader.

Matches & Scores:
2nd Leg (with 1st Leg scores included)
-Wed Jun 22
Santos 2-1 Penarol - San wins 2-1 on aggregate - San goals by Neymar & Danilo. Pen goal by Durval(OG).

After the game ended we saw what unfortunately has become a regular occurrence, the two teams slugging & kicking it out in a ridiculous brawl. Pathetic.

OOF

Two MLS games were played last night and zero goals were scored.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

The Boston Herald picks up on the story of the conflict that has arisen between New England Revolution supporters and ownership.
-There is a huge bit of contradiction in this article - the police say people were arrested for being drunk and definitely NOT for disapproved language, but the team itself posted a note the other day saying that security was called in because of language usage. Which one is it?

The handling of this situation just gets worse and worse.

Still nothing addressing any part of the situation on the team's website or Twitter feed.

Their next two home games are a friendly on Jul 13 v Manchester United and a league match on Jul 17 v Philadelphia.

AMERICANS IN EUROPE

Game Action:

SWEDEN - Allsvenskan Liga
Gale Agbossoumonde - Djurgarden - Thu Jun 23 - on the bench as they won 1-2 at Orebro.
Samuel Petrone - Mjallby - Thu Jun 23 - dressed but did not play as they lost 3-1 at Syrianska.

EUROPE

Roberto Carlos who is playing for Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia these days had a banana thrown at him during a game at Krylya Sovetov yesterday. In response the player walked off the field.
-Some people out there really don't get it.

CONMEBOL

The countries have been playing warm up friendlies in prep for the Copa America which begins Jul 1.

Matches & Scores:
-Thu Jun 23
Uruguay v Estonia
Paraguay v Chile

ARGENTINA

River Plate is in a relegation playoff series.

And they have lost the first leg. Some of their fans took to the field and went after their own players. With the second leg being at home they might want to consider playing in an empty stadium, or have 1 cop for every person in attendance.

Matches & Scores
1st Leg
-Wed Jun 22
Belgrano 2-0 River Plate
2nd Leg
-Sat Jun 25
River Plate v Belgrano (0-2)

BIG PIMPIN

Play the Modelo Especial Shootout with Clint Dempsey - you are the goalkeeper and Clint is taking PKs. Good luck stopping him.
-And there is a sweepstakes thingy where you can win a trip to a big game somewhere.

It is my understanding that the "b" sample for the Mexican players came back as negative.

In the past, under WADA charter, a negative 'b' sample constitutes a negative test. This would clear way for the players to be replaced mid-tournament as their removal from the game was precautionary.

Just my $.02

yes SR you would logically think that is the way it was done

buts its concacaf so it was not

they were given a second test and they passed

the b sample was not tested

its all b.s.
