Some News for Thu Jun 16, 2011

STARTERS

Attendance at New England v Toronto game on Wednesday night in Foxborough MA was 6,680! The Revs now officially have the lamest ownership group in all of MLS. They should be embarrassed to have so few at their games. Shame on them. The fans, players, and staff all deserve better than the support given to them by the Krafts. I think we would all like them to get it together or move on, please.

dN

I completely miscalculated last weekend, and now realize that Velez Sarsfield has won the Argentine Primera Clausura championship. Huge congrats to them.
-This is their 8th title, moving them up to the 5th most title winning club in Argentina football history. Besides River & Boca can you name one of the other two?

dN

As expected Jonathan Spector has been released by West Ham, and Marcus Hahnemann has been released by Wolverhampton.

dN

The man behind the original Calciopoli scandal former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has been banned from any involvement in Italian football for life. 5 years after the referee fixing was uncovered it is now over with the harshest of punishments handed out.

A few notes on the Revs-TFC game Wednesday night:

Paid-for tickets might have been 6k, but in reality there was probably one 1/3 of that in actual attendance.

However, the Bruins were playing a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals at the same exact time. The Red Sox wouldn't even be able to compete with that.

Having said that, shame on the Revs no matter what.

Ref. Argentina, the other two teams with more titles than Velez are Independiente and San Lorenzo.

Bruce, I love your site, but give the Rev's a break.

I was at that game (as I am for all of them), and was IMPRESSED that we actually pulled 6K-plus attendees (actual scanned tix, despite what anonymous suggests) for a weeknight game that kicked off simultaneously with the first Stanley Cup finals the Bruins had seen in for 40 years, and ran the highest (65%?) TV ratings EVER for a hockey game here, with more viewers than any Celtics palyoff ever for instance.

That said, sad that the only thing we had to cheer that night was each time the news flashed up that the Bruins had scored.

Attendance vs last year was suppressed by the fact temperatures were positively arctic at the beginning of the season (avg 10 degrees lower than normal, several below freezing with wind chill for the first 6 or 7), and now that it's warmed up there are few familiar faces, our most popular fan favorite out for the season (Perovic), and 4 out the best 6 players currently injured after having barely seen the field this season (Domi, Dabo, Feilhaber, Perovic).

The Rev's have a lot of problems, but there are reasons that are hard to fix (They've made changes to improve the Gillette experience but it's too big to ever have a great atmosphere, and the elephant in the room is that fake turf continues to contribute to injuries and the reluctance of marquee players to join a team where they have to play on it frequently).

Not to make a ton of excuses, (the Front Office could certainly do better, fans could make more effort, and somebody should be hiring expert physical trainers and dare I say, less "old school" coaches, that could help minimize the turf impact and injureis) but there are a lot of tough to overcome circumstances for the team right now for which there aren't quick fixes.
