VIDEO OF THE DAY

Shine On - Episode 2 - the ongoing documentary film of the 2011 NSC Minnesota Stars. My team. Our team. The local team. In the NASL.

THATS WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR

The New England Revolution management team invited supporters to a summit last night to discuss "inappropriate language" in the stands and who the team has dealt with it. Fans feel they have been mistreated by stadium security.

Plenty of reports on the meeting from the fans point of view:
-Andrew Donahue for The Bent Musket
-Brian for The Drug Is Football
-Nathan Gower posted unofficial minutes from the meeting on Big Soccer.

And then we get an article by Kyle McCarthy posted at MLSsoccer.com. (This is the most official article we have seen yet.)

One of the funniest things I read in all of this is the fans section is referred to as The Fort, while the people who occupy The Fort refer to the rest of the stadium as The Morgue! Genius.

Again the team has to this day still never used their own website, blog or Twitter feed to alert the majority of fans to any of this. They almost appear to be trying to keep it well hidden.

One forum the fans have taken to is the team's Facebook page, and boy oh boy are they letting the management have it. Like this simple note to the team president:
-"Dear Brian Biello: Please Resign. Signed, a soccer fan who cares about his fellow supporters. - Brian Barrish"

And now on the heals of all that we get this mysterious string of Twitters that started yesterday and have lead to this press release: Fort Active Supporters Trust Founded - Begins Initiative to Bring New England Revolution Back To Boston Under Fan Based Ownership
-Hmmmmm. I didn't know the team was ever in Boston and then left.

WHAT???

Did you get yours yet? (thanks to Brian for the link)

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION

I didn't know teams could do something this cold but NER has released forward Marko Perovic who blew out his knee a few weeks ago and was lost for the season. He was their best player last year. Wow.
-Later in the day Kyle McCarthy who covers the Revs sent out this Twitter: "Perovic in short: option due at the end of June - he asked #revs and the league to not exercise his option - move is not injury related."

NEW YORK RED BULLS

Ives Galarcep of Fox Soccer does his best to explain why New York acquired Dwayne De Rosario from Toronto only a few weeks ago, and then shipped him off to DC this week.

STORY OF THE DAY

“We’ll have something to say later this week.”
-Sunil Gulati - President of US Soccer

Jack Bell and Andrew Das of the New York Times with the latest on Bob Bradley rumors.

Marc Zeigler of the San Diego Union Tribune with a mini-treatise on the state of the USA men's national team. It ain't pretty.

Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe reflects on the Gold Cup final and the bigger picture of Team USA, featuring a very interesting quote from Bruce Arena.

Nick Green of the Daily Breeze shares his views on the bigger picture of the men's team as well.

WHY NOT!

My Thoughts on the current state of the USA mens national team:

Bob Bradley has instilled a certain mentality of playing the game within "the group", as he likes to say, and If find that the word "managing" is a good description of his style. Not as in "I am the manager." but rather in "We can keep a good grasp on the situation."

Meaning that the team on the field does what it has to do to try and win. But nowhere in the plans is there room to attack, breakdown and dominate another team from beginning till end. (I am not referring to attacking with the ball, or breaking down a defense with a nice pass, but in the bigger picture.)

Intimidation, positive attitude, confidence - all gone out the window.

The idea is to keep the game contained right in front of you. Simple boxes, easy movements, team effort and an honest days work. Managing.

"I thought we managed most situations during the game well. Others not so well."

Its also ego-less football.
Manage-the-game-from-within football.
React to whats-going-on-around-you football.
Take-what-the-other-team-gives-you football.
Painful-to-be-a-fan football.

Its getting old.
Like the air the next morning inside a previously smoke filled bar.

And I am one of the people who defend Bob Bradley.

Some News for Tue Jun 28, 2011

STARTERS

Oguchi Onyewu has officially signed with Sporting of Lisbon Portugal. Its a 3 year deal.
-They have two veteran starting centerback on the roster already, so he will have to beat them out for a starting spot.

STORY OF THE DAY

There is a storm brewing among supporters of the USA men's national team about the way they were treated last Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. All out hostility and violence is what a good many USA fans got in the stands from Mexican fans. We all know that if the tables were turned and American fans did this to Mexicans it would be an international incident. There should be no double standard, and US Soccer and CONCACAF need to stand up and make this right.
-This doesn't even get into the last time the USA played in Mexico City and how poorly we were treated there. Not cool.

Read these horror stories from the Sack Lunch blog about the Gold Cup final at the Rose Bowl.

TEAM USA AT THE 2011 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

Germany 2011 is under way.

dN

The USA rolled like pros in game 1. N Korea were a stubborn opponent but eventually broke down.

The N Korea coach said after the game that his goalkeeper and several other key members of the team were struck by lightning during training on Jun 8 and have not recovered yet.
-Then why were they out there?

dN

I have three observations from today's game:

Brilliant irony from the EuroSport commentator: "They will not stand around being dictated to, these North Koreans!"

I kept expecting a close up of a player on the field and it would be Kristine Lilly! It does not feel 100% like the USA without her.

I don't know what to think of those USA dental hygienist uniforms they are wearing.

Some News for Mon Jun 27, 2011

STARTERS

Mexico is the Gold Cup champions. Huge congrats to them on a roaring comeback win crushing their rivals the USA. Hurra Cerveza!

dN

In a whopper of a deal DC United has acquired Dwayne DeRosario from New York in exchange for Dax McCarty.

dN

In a stunning upset River Plate has been relegated to the second division (B Nacional) in Argentina for the first time in their 110 year existence.
-To put into context that would be like Liverpool or Manchester United being sent down in England.
-The aftermath saw chaos in the streets of Buenos Aires as people rioted around the stadium. The final tally looked like this: 2 cops with fractured skulls, 15 cars torched, 75 arrests, and nearly 100 injured taken to hospitals.

dN

The USA U17 team tied for 2nd place in their group with New Zealand. And when I say tied, I mean tied in every tie breaker. So how did the USA get the 2nd place seed in the knock out rounds? The drew straws. I kid you not.
-The USA is now stuffed into a foursome of Germany, Argentina and England, facing Germany in the next round, and if they win taking on the winner of the other two, just to get to the Semifinals where the most likely opponent would be the host team - MEXICO!

dN

LA Galaxy keeper Donovan Ricketts suffered a broken left arm and will be out of the line up 6 weeks or so.
-With back up Josh Saunders serving a suspension for a red card next week, who will tend the nets, and don't say Mike Magee. Odds are strong that Brian Perk will make his pro debut.

The only question I have remaining about this match is a repeat: Why was Mexico allowed to replace 5 players that were kicked out of the tournament for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs? And when will we see the results of tests on those players B samples?

THATS WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR

My man Steve Davis on his blog Daily Soccer Fix gives some words of advice to the owners of the New England Revolution, on fan appreciation.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

We have proof that Stan Kroenke knows who the Colorado Rapids are. Yes he is the owner, but he is elusive and few of us outside CO have ever scene proof of him in the same vacinity of his team. The team met President Obama at the White House today in honor of their MLS Cup victory. Great stuff.

One more thing - what the hell is Tyrone Marshall doing in that picture??? He wasn't on the team last year. Excellent move on his part. I approve!

DU NORD PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND OTHER STUFF

Mike Magee of Los Angeles started the game on Saturday at forward as usual, but after goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts injured his elbow in the 24th minute, and back up Josh Saunders got a red card in the 43rd minute, it was Magee who pulled on the black jersey and gloves to not only keep San Jose scoreless but also made 4 saves along the way! Not forgetting that they played that whole time with only 10 players, and on the road in front of a record Buck Shaw Stadium crowd.

MY THOUGHTS

Win another home win Kansas City has moved up from 9th place to 6th place in the Eastern Conference.

dN

And with a 10th game in a row without a win New York finally fell from 1st place to 3rd place in the East.

dN

Toronto fell into last place in the East, and worse yet they have given up the most goals in the whole league.

dN

Dallas have moved to within 4 pts of league leaders LA, and they have 2 games in hand.

dN

Beyond the broken arm suffered by LA keeper Donovan Ricketts there were more injuries this weekend of note:
-Brad Davis - Houston - came off at half time due to a groin strain, and injury that can be a nag for a long time if you don't get enough rest.
-Pablo Mastroeni - Colorado - left the game yesterday in the 16th min but no one seems to want to say what the injury is.
-Jeff Parke - Seattle - left the game early due to a migraine. No word on his condition.

dN

3 teams took leads on the road and then found a way to lose:
-Chivas USA: scored first, then tied it up again at 2 only to lose in Philly 3-2.
-New England: grabbed a goal in the opening moments, then got rolled 2-1 in Seattle.
-Colorado: got the opening goal then lost 4-1 at Columbus.

THE FIFA SCANDAL STORY NEVER ENDS

Well respected senior soccer journalist Brian Glanville writing for the Gulf News weighs in on the FIFA-carcas.

JACK WARNER MANIA

No longer a member of the world soccer community in any way, Jack was chopped down another rung of the ladder today when the Trinidad government took away half of his roll as a senior cabinet member. Warner had been the Minister of Transportation and Works, but Transportation was removed from his plate. He is now Minister of Works, and the goverment is still feeling tons of pressure to releave Jack of his duties all together.

Seem to me that no one has liked Jack for a very very long time, but they never had the guts to stand up to him. Now that one person, his long time sidekick Chuck Blazer, has turned on him, they are all lining up to take their shots.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been under heavy political pressure to make many changes in her goverment, Warner's being just one of 16 changes made yesterday.

BIG PIMPIN

To celebrate the most American of holidays, we are proud to present our Bumpy Pitch Fourth of July t-shirt.

Although this shirt is clearly inspired by the Fourth of July, the major undertone is the idea of celebrating independence in general.

As an independent brand, we wanted to explore the idea of independence. We feel like there is an amazing spirit of independence that exists and we wanted to celebrate this notion via the medium of a t-shirt graphic.

So celebrate the amazing and liberating notion of independence with us. But don't wait too long. These shirts are limited in numbers and once they are gone, they won't be coming back.

Celebrate Independence!!

Action Jackson – The Return to Action

Jack Jewsbury. Josh Wolf. Davy Arnaud. Jimmy Conrad.

One of these things is not like the other!

Yes they have all spent a massive amount of time with the Sporting Wizards KC. I guess Josh Wolf is the only true striker on that list. But that’s not what different.

Of those four veterans who were here for the 2010 season, Davy Arnaud alone remained to see the new stadium open. Josh Wolf is off with DC and the land of divers, Jimmy Conrad to Chivas and the horrible world of concussions, and Jack Jewsbury, well he’s not missing being part of Sporting KC anymore.

-----

A lot of Sporting KC long timers almost made it to the new stadium and sparkling new locker room. They had spent years being the face of the team. Playing in shit stadiums on teams good (2004’s Western Conference Finals and Open Cup Champions) and on not so good and plain rotten teams.

When OnGoal purchased the team, things finally started to look up. In the two years building up to the opening of the stadium and the 2011 season, the veteran players were asked over and over again to describe the miserable past they had been through and the bright optimistic future that await them and their club in the coming years.

“I can’t believe we are finally going to have a place to call home.”

“The stadium is going to be world class”

But for a few veterans, all they’d have to do with the new stadium and team name was promote it. They pimped it like crazy, participated in interviews, panels, autograph signing, ground breakings, and the ownership even paraded Jimmy Conrad out on stage for the big name change announcement while at the same time refusing to discuss his contract.

----

Jack Jewsbury is one of those veterans. Drafted 43rd in 2003, he struggled for playing time before quickly establishing himself as a fan favorite by 2004. For eight years he played for Kansas City, endlessly running the pitch, bruising attackers and midfielders alike, and scoring great goals.

In 2010, Action Jackson lost his starting spot. The upstart, Craig Rocastle, took over and relegated Jackson to a minor but important role as a regular substitute. It was clear Vermes was done using Jackson as a star.

While his playing time dwindled, he fought to regain his position, and settled into the unspectacular role as a permanent substitute by the end of the 2010 season.
Even among his faithful, the fans started to lose faith after the long slow lull of losses in the middle of the season. Sporting KC was sinking fast and Jackson was on the chopping block.
---
Jackson has yet to step through the doors of the new stadium. He never made it to the Sporting’s 2011 preseason in Arizona. Vermes decided to ship Jackson to Portland for allocation money (which to me always feels like a little bit of a slap in the face).

But for Jackson, while the clichéd door was slamming shut on his career with Kansas City, a giant window of opportunity was opening. Jackson stepped out of a team struggling to find its own identity to one who had found theirs years ago.

Immediately recognized for his leadership abilities, Jackson began captaining Portland from the moment he stepped off the plane, retook his rightful place on the pitch as a starter, and quickly proceeded to hoist massive log slices in the air.

Jackson now leads the teams in goals, assists, has started every game, and has already made himself loved by the fans.

He couldn’t have got a better deal. And I couldn’t be happier for him. I just hope the Portland fans pick up the “Action Jackson” chant where the Sporting KC fans left off.

ENDERS

Wow it feels weird to write an article for duNord again! First there was one vacation, and then Wakarusa, then work catch up, and then all sorts of wonderful tailgating activities, and now as my writer’s brain began to crust over from writing about security at my day job I couldn’t be happier to have shit out a little article about Action Jackson. I’m ready to roll.

Here’s two artist’s I’ve been loving recently. Best of all, the Pretty Lights Label releases every one of their artist’s albums for free online.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Roger Levesque of Seattle did a fantastic goal celebration last night as he sat on the advertisement boards, plugged his nose, and fell over the wall backwards like he was going scuba diving.
-He is still a punk for kicking Minnesota Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren in the face all those years ago though.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

"The Russian Football Union was preparing to enact an anti-racism campaign memorandum."

The Associated Press reports on Russia's new plan to fight racism in soccer.

"Last year, Lokomotiv Moscow fans unfurled a banner showing a banana directed at the Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie, who went on to join West Bromwich Albion. Russian officials attempted to claim the banner reflected general discontent at the striker and was not a reference to his skin colour."
