STORY OF THE DAY

Paul Tenorio of the Washington Post with an article on the growing influence of elite soccer academies on high school age players. (thanks to @ussoccer_ynt on Twitter for the link)

There is one glaring sentence in this article that is just very wrong: "Supporters of the high school game point to the current U.S. national pool and the number of players who played not only high school soccer, but other sports as well."

The vast majority of the USA national team players did not have this Development Adademy program to play in because as the article points out the academy league is only 4 years old. (And yet it has produced a player for this current roster in Juan Agudelo.)

I'm pretty sure the players all would have loved to be on an even higher level team than they did at age 17.

Finally, almost half of the guys on the current USA roster were part of the Dev Academy league predecessor the USA residency program in Bradenton FL: Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Jonathan Spector, Robbie Rogers, Eric Lichaj, Freddy Adu, Jonathan Bornstein and Oguchi Onyewu were all in the system.
