Some News for Fri May 6, 2011

STORY OF THE DAY

Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America writes about that growing passion for soccer in the USA that you and I feel everyday. It may not be huge or the best, but you can literally feel the vibrations of it all getting slowly bigger and bigger.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Trying to defend Barcelona is like trying to nail Jello to the ceiling."

-Ray Hudson, commentator, GolTV

Jonah Freedman of MLSsoccer.com says MLS needs Ray Hudson back in the fold, if for nothing else more creativity and flash.
-Hear! Hear!

HMMMMM, VERY INTERESTING

Ives Galarcep of Fox Soccer looks at the ouster of Thomas Rongen from the USA U20 team.
-This team was supposedly the most talented team ever, yet they failed to qualify for the World Cup which has never happened to the USA team.

Charles Boehm of Potomac Soccer Wire does a Q & A with Rongen about this development. (Thanks to Charles, a different one, for the link)

FACT OF THE DAY

Many have labeled Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a malcontent, but with Milan this season he is on the verge of winning his 8th league title in a row. Impressive.

COPA LIBERTADORES

Round Of 16

Recap du Nord: The variety of countries (7) represented in the Quarterfinals is extraordinary. We are so used to Brazil and Argentina dominating that this is a refreshing surprise indeed. Yes Santos has the biggest name, but you would have a hard time calling anyone the clear favorite now. Of the teams left Junior and Libertad had the best records in the group stage.

Last night in the last games of the Round of 16 Velez Sarsfield coasted to an easy win, Chiapas Jaguares of Mexico surprisingly moved forward and Cerro Porteno needed Penalties to win after 2 scoreless legs.
