Some News for Mon Feb 21, 2011


The USA U17 team will play in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 2pm Central time. They will face El Salvador and the game can be seen live on


Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe reports on more problems for long time New England Revolution star Shalrie Joseph. He and teammate Kevin Alston were sent away from team training camp in Florida for undisclosed disciplinary reasons.
-The team is in Florida for the another week, so the earliest these two will rejoin the Revs is next week back in the Boston area.


After 2 months out of action due to a knee injury, the du Nord Fave Named Player of the Season Ricky van Wolfswinkel of Utrecht was back in the lineup and back on the goal scorers sheet. Hooray Ricky! (He's not old enough to drink beer.)


Young American midfielder Alejandro Bedoya of Orebro in Sweden is going to get a look from Birmingham City in England this week. (Report from Orebro in Swedish.)


Jonathan Tannenwald of reports that the Union are all set to announce the signing of El Pescadito.

Sure Carlos Ruiz is nowhere near the player he was back in 2002 (9 years ago!), but despite his evil ways he has always been a du Nord favorite, so we are very glad to see him back in MLS!!

The 2011 CONCACAF U17 Championship/World Cup Qualifying is now under way in Jamaica.
-Mexico has already qualified as the hosts of the tournament. 4 more CONCACAF teams will advance.


Costa Rica won Group A on Friday, while USA won Group B.

On Saturday Canada won Group C, with Jamaica winning Group D.

Guatemala, Cuba, Barbados and Haiti were the 4 teams eliminated after the Group stage.


The winners of the 4 Quarterfinal games on Tue and Wed will advance to the U17 World Cup this summer in Mexico.

Jozy Altidore picked up some sort of incident (one story said injury and another said illness) on Saturday in his 2nd game at Bursaspor and had to be subbed out after just 34 minutes.


Anton Peterlin and his English League One team Plymouth Argyle are now in a near impossible spot to avoid relegation as the owners have filed for bankruptcy protection and will be deducted 10 points per league rules. They had been in 19th place out of 24 with 33 points, but the subtraction will take them to 23 points, 5 behind the currently bottom team. Ugh.

Everyone else thinks Ruiz is an asshole.

Were you tickled by the way he intentionally struck Kasey Keller in that qualifying game in 2001 ? How about the way he intentionally struck Carey Talley in 2003 or 2004or whenever it was ?

Then again, all you recovering alcoholics (Bruce, Carlos Ruiz) have to stick together, eh ?
