WORLD CUP 2022 FALLOUT

"It was disappointing because I know how hard people had worked, including myself, to bring home a result. And when you realize in the end it didn't have much of a chance because it had little to do with what we were saying and more on how things are in the world, it's kind of a hard thing to reconcile."
-Chuck Blazer

STORY OF THE DAY

James Horncastle of Football Italia with a look back at the Inter career of my favorite player of all time Il Fenomeno - the Real Ronaldo.
-Also contains a 15 minute video collage not of his goalscoring, but his stunning ball control. Wow.

As for goal scoring, his stats are almost impossible to top:
-For Brazil: 62 goals in 97 games.
-For his multiple clubs: 250 goals in 343 games. (Including 42 in 46 at PSV and 34in 37 at Barcelona.)

VIDEO CLIP OF THE DAY

Herculez Gomez provides a little look around the stadium in Abu Dhabi where he and his Pachuca teammates played today at the Club World Cup.

BIG EUROPEAN CLUB MATCHES COMING UP THIS WEEKEND

-Sun Dec 12
Tottenham v Chelsea - one of the most meaningful meetings between these two London rivals in a long time. #5 hosts #3.
Juventus v Lazio - #3 v #2
-Mon Dec 13
Manchester United v Arsenal - #2 v #1 - and bitter rivals over the past decade!

FACT OF THE DAY

Barcelona will replace Unicef as their front of shirt advertisement for next season (the team made a charitable contribution to Unicef then took a tax write off), and will instead sell their jersey for the first time in club history, earning 30 Million Euro per season for 5 seasons to advertise something called the Qatar Foundation.

dN

Paolo Bandini of the Guardian on the landmark deal.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

There are some really nice details on Portland's second shirt for next season. Just under the collar on the back it says ROSE CITY. And on the front is the actual Rose City patch. And the red is nice too. (click to make the picture grow)

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

NEW YORK RED BULLS

The Bulls are all set to sign English forward Luke Rodgers now that his visa problems have been cleared up. He is currently at Notts County in the third division (League One.)

dN

SEATTLE SOUNDERS

Joshua Mayers of the Times says it looks like the Sounders have signed 24 year old midfielder Erik Friberg of Hacken in Sweden.

dN

The Times also hosted a reader Q & A with general manager Adrian Hanauer today.

TORONTO FC

Gareth Wheeler of the Sun wonders why it is taking so long to put new tires on the TFC company truck. AKA find a new GM and head coach.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC

The Caps signed 2 more of their Division 2 rostered players to the new MLS team - midfielder Terry Dunfield and centerback Greg Janicki.

MLS/SUM BUSINESS

The CBS Business Network feels that financially, going from 8 playoff teams to 10 will be a big mistake.

USL PRO NEWS

With more teams being added all the time to the new third division league I thought I might as well post the current list of 15.

Barracuda FC (St. John's, Antigua)
Charleston Battery (Southern South Carolina)
Charlotte Eagles (South Central North Carolina)
Dayton Dutch Lions (Western Ohio)
FC New York (Long Island New York)
Harrisburg City Islanders (Central Pennsylvania)
Los Angeles Blues (Southern California)
Orlando City SC (Central Florida)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds (Western Pennsylvania)
Puerto Rico United (Aguada PR)
Richmond Kickers (Central Virginia)
River Plate Puerto Rico (San Juan PR)
Rochester Rhinos (Western New York)
Sevilla FC Puerto Rico (Juncos PR)
Wilmington Hammerheads (South Eastern North Carolina)

dN

I can see some problems arising real quick due to travel costs for this league, especially with a team in Antigua, 3 in Puerto Rico, and one not just away from the east coast but all the way out west in Los Angeles. The second furthest western team in is Dayton OH.

BRAZIL 2014 WORLD CUP

CONMEBOL will get an extra spot in this tournament, as hosts Brazil are in automatically, and the region also got to keep their normal 4.5 places. So South America will have 5.5 spots in that World Cup.

Interesting to see Chuck Blazer hint at behind the scenes politicking considering when Jack Warner says jump he says "How high?" and when Jack Warner says "vote for this" he does just that.
