TAYLOR TWELLMAN RETIRES

Due lingering damage from concussions, one of the leagues most prolific goal scorers has been forced to retire way too early. He is 30 years old.

Watch the press conference of Twellman's announcement.

Three writers know him as good as anyone:
-Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe
-Kyle McCarthy of the Boston Herald
-Greg Lalas of MLSsoccer.com

Twellman impressively scored 29 goals for the 1860 Munich reserves, 101 goals for the New England Revolution, 6 goals for the USA, and 6 goals for USA youth teams.

In late July 2009 du Nord did a Q & A with Twellman. Conducted by Paul Demko.

Trivia: Twellman was born right here in my city, Minneapolis, while his father was a member of our Minnesota Kicks of the old NASL.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Now, there’s been some chatter around Omar [Bravo, the team's recent Designate Player signing] and whether or not he wants to be in Kansas City. A lot of that I think is comments taken out of context, but we are going to spend a bunch of time with him between now and training camp to make sure he wants to be here. If for whatever reason he doesn’t want to be, then we’re not going to bring him in. We’ll make sure we do our due diligence and everything is great before we bring him in."
-Robb Heinemann, president of the Kansas City Wizards. See full Q & A in team section below.

So the hat trick didn't blow your mind (understandably), but you have to feel a little bit of the Gareth Bale fever, right?
I mean, he made Maicon look like an amateur.

Secured a birth? That made me spit out my coffee! :)

Interesting factoid... in the movie "Once in a Lifetime" about the Cosmos, there is a passage about how Pele was routinely hacked by infinitely inferior players. The footage at that point is someone fouling Pele with the name Twellman on his jersey!
