Some News for Fri Oct 15, 2010

Before you get started I want to apologize. I had some more really great stuff today, but I had a huge computer malfunction and some how lost hours of work. Dammit.

STARTERS

US Soccer announced today that they have pulled their bid for the 2018 World Cup off the table, and will focus on 2022 only. This was expected as a favor to European countries bidding for 2018 in exchange for their support in 2022. Read the full press release here.
-The other candidates for 2022 are Australia, Japan, South Korea & Qatar. Which to me means Australia and Qatar seeing as the other two just hosted the WC 8 years ago.

TELENOVELA HIGADO PISCINA

The sale of Liverpool FC saga continues, and will continue for quite some time. That is the only part of the story that I am convinced about.

Where it stands: The current American owners have dropped their injunction on the LFC board of directors to keep them from selling the team out from under them, but they now vowing to keep fighting. The Liverpool board then announced that the sale of the team to investors from New England Sports Venture is complete, and the club is moving forward. Giant lawsuits will commence soon.

I have said it before and I will say it again - If you think two businessmen will walk away with a $140 Million loss on this deal, then you are delusional. They will fight till the end.
-I wrote above that the current owners are set to lose $140 Million if the deal go through. That number is incorrect its actually 140 Million British Pounds - considerably more at $224 Million!

The Associated Pres article on the dropping of the Texas court injunction.

The Liverpool Echo has the most complete coverage.

The Echo reports that the sale is done.

This is the image that was on the front of the Liverpool site today:

And here is the official statement from the club, on the sale.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

No matter what order the teams finish in, this will be the strongest MLS playoffs ever. All 8 teams are really good. I can't wait for the playoffs to start. Can we ditch the last 2 rounds of the regular season and launch into it right now?!?!

IF THE PLAYOFFS STARTED TODAY

Here would be the match ups for the first round:

1W Los Angeles v 4W Seattle
2W Salt Lake v 3W Dallas

1E New York v 4E Colorado
2E Columbus v 3E San Jose

I think that's right.

MLS PLAYOFF RACE

Colorado and Kansas City are the only two teams left to fight for the last playoff spot.
-Due to Colorado's 6 point lead its not much of a fight.
-Any earning of points by Colorado or loss of points by Kansas City will end the chase.

MLS TEAM & PLAYER NEWS

General News

Jeff Rusnak of the Sun Sentinel sees the high quality in the 8 teams that will make the playoffs.
-Good to hear from Rusnak again, we have not linked to him in a long time.

COLORADO RAPIDS

One point, any point, will get it done.

dN

Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America looks at the Raps collapse the past two seasons, as they try to avoid that scenario this year.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS

100% must-win-weekend, and then its still not even close to being in the bag.

dN

Pete Grathoff of the Star is already looking ahead to next season. (Hint: Omar Bravo)
-I will continue my campaign to have assistant coach Octavio Zambrano given a promotion to head coach.

LOS ANGELES GALAXY

With a win on Saturday the Galaxy can claim the supporters shield.

dN

Phil Collin of the Daily News with an article on ailing centerback Gregg Berhalter.
-Later in the day, the Galaxy announce that Berhalter is ready to go and will be on the game roster.

NEW YORK RED BULLS

Its pretty much a done deal that forward Juan Pablo Angel will not be offered a new contract by the team for next season. Insane.
-I really really really hope he decides to stay in MLS.

dN

Michael Lewis of Big Apple Soccer says that Chris Albright should be up for Comeback Player of the Year.
-And he should win it too. Or is there someone else?

REAL SALT LAKE

James Edward of the Deseret News sees this weekend's RSL game against Dallas as a really big one.
-RSL has a 24 game unbeaten streak at home.
-FCD has a 19 game unbeaten streak overall.

dN

Michael C Lewis of the Tribune talks to head coach Jason Kreis who says a lot of good things about a player he dump as soon as the took the job in charge - Jeff Cunningham.

Lewis also tells us that RSL is lining up to break some defensive records.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

With a little time to look back at all of the league's big name summer signings, I find it hard to argue that the one who has contributed the most to his team has been Geovanni.

Add him to three mid-season pickups that have added strength and depth to the team:
-Tim Ward
-Sam Cronin
-Khari Stephenson

You have to give GM John Doyle and HC Frank Yallop a lot of credit. And here I thought they would probably be gone after this season. Silly me.

TORONTO FC

Gareth Wheeler of the Toronto Sun attends the first of a series of "town hall meetings" that TFC held with fans last night and says it came off well, not a typical sports team dog and pony show.

dN

John Molinaro of the CBC tries to get to the root of TFC's issues.
-I can tell you what is wrong with TFC - 1) The day I heard MLSE was going to own the team I knew they were in trouble on the field, just look at their track record with the Maple Leafs for proof. I will keep saying this until they prove me wrong. And 2) Their first hire was Mo frickin Johnston and they kept him around for 4 frickin years.

BIDDING TO HOST WORLD CUP 2018 & 2022

Qatar are bidding for the 2022 WC, and they have some seriously cool plans to build the most amazing stadiums you have ever seen. They won't get the bid, but I am glad they got someone to draw up these pictures for us to see. Like this magnificent beauty:

My apologies to Brian Strauss at Fanhouse, cuz I stole the link to these images right out of his article today.
