Some News for Tue Sep 7, 2010

STARTERS

As was speculated last week, Brian McBride has announced that this will be his last season playing professional soccer. He will retire at the end of this Chicago Fire season. What an amazing player he has been for his clubs especially Columbus and Fulham, not to mention all the fantastic games for the USA. An all time great!

Here is video of his fantastic press conference.

USA WORLD CUP 2018/22 BID

The inspection of USA facilities by FIFA delegates goes down this week, beginning last night in New York City.

And lets be realistic, this is about the 2022 World Cup, as 2018 is almost guaranteed to land in Europe.

Ronald Blum of the Associated Press reports that the FIFA World Cup inspection team will have breakfast at the White House on Wednesday. Via Yahoo.

Besides those two cities, the groups will also go to Miami, Dallas and Houston.

Sal Ruibal of USA Today on the delegation's visit.

Brian Lewis of the NY Post has some quotes from the head of the FIFA delegation and US Soccer pres Sunil Gulati.

Here is video of the full press conference from where those quotes were taken.
-See Gulati snap at Paul Gardner - HILARIOUS!

JACK WARNER/SEPP BLATTER/FIFA ODDITIES

The Observer on even more mistreatment of fans by FIFA at the World Cup - they are selling your personal information and more. And in a real shockeroo, a relative of a FIFA member may be involved.

PODCASTS/VIDEOCASTS

Nice! Greg Seltzer of No Short Corners has video of Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl giving a speech on the state of soccer in America at the University of Arkansas (that wild futbol hotbed.)

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"You need an American coach. You save some money, a lot of money, and you get someone who understands the American way. This country, and soccer in this country, is different to anywhere else.
Our players don’t suddenly get better with a foreign coach. They don’t suddenly become Superman. It is a bunch of crap to think otherwise."

-Bruce Arena telling critics to shut up and get off Bob Bradley's back.

I can't say I disagree with his feelings. And I think both of them have done a great job with our national team.

OOF

Both New England's Shalrie Joseph and Seattle's Patrick Ianni should be called out by teammates, media and fans for their lameass acting during the team's game on Saturday.

Ianni intentionally stepped on Joseph's foot, so Joseph swung his arms wildly, then the two of them went to the ground as if Joseph had stepped on a Punji stick and Ianni had been hit by Johnny Bones Jones.

Ianni even managed a nice Shaun Of The Dead style zombie stagger for several yards before presumably internal bleeding got the better of him and he went down. Joseph went down on the spot.

Apologists for both teams say the player from the other squad embellished the action. Please. Both guys are 100% guilty of Norm MacDonald quality acting, and should be suspended for their insult to us the viewer.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

The Chicago Fire hit the 3 Million fan attendance mark last weekend, and that person won 2 season tickets for next year!!

WHY?

I have been hearing from people who bought tickets to USA v Poland in Chicago that the game is the night before the Chicago Marathon, and there are no hotels to be had. Anyone out there having any luck?

The SF Chronicle is way off. There's no way the A's are getting a 65k stadium (that's more like the capacity of the proposed new 49ers stadium). Last I heard, the A's were looking at 35k-40k.

I was in chicago this weekend for the fire/galaxy game and man, was it awesome! 21 thousand fans erupting after a huge penalty save and a great free kick goal? I'm pretty sure I'm sold that MLS can be just as exciting as any other league that americans seem to think are 'superior'.
