Some News for Fri Jun 4, 2010

STARTERS

Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast is the 3rd major star to be injured badly enough to miss the World Cup. He suffered a dislocated elbow in a friendly against Japan on Friday.
-Don't bet the house on him missing the WC just yet!

dN

From the upcoming issue of the New York Times Sunday Magazine we get a very cool in depth article by Michael Sokolove on the legendary youth soccer system of Amsterdam Ajax. Great job.

dN

New Yorker also has a really good big article this week by Hampton Sides on Tim Howard and Team USA. It is only available on line to subscribers, so I suggest you go buy it - the June 7 edition. And while yer at it read the whole magazine cover to cover. It will make you smarter, I promise.

dN

Arch Bell of the Yanks Abroad seems to feel that this talk of Jonathan Bornstein leaving Chivas USA to play for Atlante in Mexico is true.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

Real Salt Lake make the customary champions stop at the Whitehouse. Always cool in my book.
-The team also has more words, photos and video from the big day.
-Salt Lake Tribune with even more good words and video.

FACT OF THE DAY

A reader named Peteo let us know that the Nike Write The Future ad was the most watched (non-music) video on the internet in the month of May.

dN

Why not watch it again.

dN

Oh hell, lets watch the Landon Donovan and Jozy Altidore ESPN commercials too.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY

Who would have imagined just a few short years ago that a team like Boca Juniors could come here to play 3 friendly's and go home with 3 losses. Truly remarkable growth in American soccer. They lost to LA 1-0, Seattle 3-0 and Portland 3-2.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Steve Davis on his blog Daily Soccer Fix is just giddy over the notion that soccer haters all across America are having each and every day ruined right now by all the mega-media coverage in our country for the World Cup.
-Its time for heavy karma baby!

WHY NOT!

North Korea tried to name a striker as their 3rd goalkeeper on their World Cup roster, (you must have 3 of the 23 be keepers), but FIFA told them, "Aniyo! Aniyo! Aniyo!", those 3 can ONLY play goalkeeper, and nowhere else on the field are they allowed. Nice try Kim. But you can't get one past Sepp. He is better at that game than you are Dear Leader. ENDERS

Back on March 2nd we ran a link to a contest by @15 and Best Buy in which 13-15 year olds could win a trip to the World Cup. And amazingly the son of one of our great readers Wade was a winner. How frickin cool is that?? I hope he has a blast! Maybe we can get him to give us a little field report when he returns.

That's awesome that Realsaltlake visited the Whitehouse.

Any diversion for Obama which prohibits him from sitting at his desk and making phone calls which contribute to further screwing up the country is a good thing in my book.

I mean, we all know that Barack "I graduated from Columbia and I'm smarter than you but I refuse to release my college transcripts or senior thesis paper" Obama loves sports. He's been playing more golf than Tiger Woods all the while the Gulf Coast drowns in oil. That's what happens when you put a former "community organizer" in charge of the oversight of BP's drilling in deep waters.

And with the way that the world's most famous "community organizer" ditched attending The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetary on Memorial Day, and the way he said absolutely nothing to commemorate D-Day on June 6, it's no surprise that he's spending all his time taking photos with Realsaltlake, Duke basketball team, New Orleans Saints, and having swanky cocktail parties for Bono of U2 and Paul McCartney.

I wonder which team Obama will be rooting for in the World Cup.
