Some News for Tue Oct 13, 2009

TERRIBLE NEWS

USA forward Charlie Davies was a passenger in a car that was involved in a terrible accident in suburban DC. The car was torn in half and one of three passengers was killed. The other two (Davies and another) are in need of surgery. No word on the severity yet, but initial word is that they sustained serious injuries.

I am heading to DC in a little while now, and most likely will not update this today. But my friend Graham Fox will be posting on Wednesday and Thursday, so he will get us all the details.

Let's everyone have a good thought for Charlie and the others involved at this sad time.

STARTERS

Team USA will travel to Denmark for a friendly on Wed Nov 18. Seeing as Sat Nov 14 is also an international date, do we see our team playing on that day as well?
-Denmark's best known players are probably Daniel Agger, Dennis Rommedahl, Jon Dahl Tomasson & Nicklas Bendtner.

Many of us have wondered what's come from this partnership MLS formed with the German Bundesliga a few years back? I discovered this note from Germany today and reading between the lines you find something going from MLS to Germany: "The Bundesliga's commercial arm, DFL Sports Enterprises, celebrated its first year of existence". Ah, their own version of MLS's marketing company SUM. And what did this marketing arm do for the Bundesliga in its first year? Only increased their TV rights fees from 18 Billion Euros to 36 Billion Euros. Incredible. And don't ever believe it when MLS owners tell you they are not making money. Sure the clubs might be in the red on paper, but the overall picture is very very healthy, mostly thanks to SUM.

Glad to see your mention of MLS ownership and profits, courtesy of SUM. I have been writing about it this season(one of several posts). Especially interesting with upcoming CBA negotiations.
