Some New for Wed October 14th, 2009

CHARLIE DAVIES
Charlie Davies
Overshadowing the final game for all US fans is the tragic car accident Charlie Davies was involved in early Tuesday morning on the GW Memorial Parkway in DC.

The vehicle was torn in half, Ashley J. Roberta, 22 killed, Davies underwent 6 hours of surgery, and the driver, a yet unnamed person, was life flighted and is probably also suffering from major injuries.

For all fans of the US National Team, this is a huge tragedy and I imagine that most of you reacted similarly to me. There we were, working away when an email popped into our inbox announcing the news.

Our hands went to our head. Our mouths fell open. Our stomachs sank.

I know all US fans are wishing a speedy recovery to Davies and that he can find away to continue.

Charlie can recover, but the Ashley Roberta's life has ended, and that is the true tragedy.

The official press release from US Soccer immediately following the news.

dN

Crash details from Steven Goff. Davies was violating a curfew.

dN

The SUV they were traveling in was torn in half. I’m not sure if it was only the accident that did the tearing or if the jaws of life helped a little.

dN

If neither Charlie or Ashley were driving, who was?

USA vs. COSTA RICA
After the above, the below seems inconsequential. But football marches on through tragedy.

Honduras really, really wants the US to pull out a win or a tie and save their bacon. I think most US fans and I bet players want to do them a favor after they didn’t throw piss jugs at the players.

Over 21,000 fans are expected to show. Bundle up; it’s going to be near freezing and the wind is sure to help out with the shivering.

Is this game worth anything to the US? Well Bradley says a win could affect their seeding in the World Cup groups.

The US Team isn’t just sitting around in DC, they are out in the community. Look at those kids smile (click for a bigger, better picture)!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MLS ACTION

The timing today works out great for once. Watch the US National team and then watch RSL vs New York. Four fun hours of soccer ahoy!

Real Salt Lake v New York Red Bulls
9pm Central on ESPN2 & ESPN Deportes
Venue: Rio Tinto Stadium - Sandy UT

dN

Oddly, RSL has never beat New York. Now that’s weird.

dN

The Salt Lake Tribune says this one is win or go home. If they do lose, at least they don’t have a long flight home.

dN

This game is huge for Real Salt Lake. If they don’t want to turn into Kansas City and become dead men walking now more than every they better win.

How many times this season have games been described as must-wins? This really is the season of the zombie team. No matter how many times a team get knocked down they keep getting back up and lumbering towards you, belching out blood, and crying bloody murder like a Toronto fans who is convinced the league is rigged.
