Some News for Fri Sep 4, 2009
QUESTION ON MY MIND
Why didn't New England Revolution and FC Dallas change the start times of their games on Saturday night?
New England v Kansas city starts at the exact same time as the USA game and Dallas v DC just 30 minutes later.
The teams and the league should be completely embarrassed by this. And we should all make sure they know about it.
The most blame and ridicule of all should be heaped on the shoulders of US Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati because he also holds the position of President of Kraft Soccer, and the Kraft family owns the New England Revolution.
We all know that MLS is making a big mistake by playing on International weekends, but they have their reasons for doing so. However there should be no reason for MLS teams to play games at the same time as the USA, and basically forcing their fans to choose between the two.
STARTERS
The king is dead, long live the king - the Portland Timbers record run of 24 games without a loss is over. It was one hell of a streak! They lost the opening game of the season, and did not fall again until last night when they were beaten at home 1-2 by Rochester. I have no doubt they want to start another very long streak again as soon as possible. They will get there chance next Monday in Austin.
dN
Also in the First Division - you can see my Minnesota Thunder on FSC tonight at 7pm central take on the Vancouver Whitecaps. This is a must win for my team, as a win would eliminate them from a possible playoff opportunity.
dN
Word comes from the Oneonta Daily Star that due to a very poor financial situation the US National Soccer Hall of Fame will close its doors this weekend.

There is one very simple reason for New England to be storming up the standings - defense. After starting the season with a total makeshift unit due to departures and injuries they settled on Alston-Barnes-Osei-Heaps in front of Reis. And with a former great defender as their head coach (Steve Nicol) its not a surprise that after a while it clicked. A lesson for all struggling teams.

Amazing -- and not in a good way -- that MLS can't avoid scheduling conflictx with national team matches. Sorry to hear about the Hall of Fame's problems. It is a fascinating place to visit for anyone interested in the history of soccer in the U.S.
