Some New for Mon Aug 3

El Guzano leads Aston Villa to a preseason tournament championship over Juventus. See Americans in Europe for details.

LA v Barca drew an astonishing 93,137 fans to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Of the 6 games played this weekend, three of them were pure Wild West shootout, while three were old fashioned nail biters. The only people who didn't enjoy these games were the fans of the two teams who got blown out.

Did you foresee Dallas scoring 6 and San Jose scoring 4 and neither giving up a single goal this weekend. Wow, oh Wow, oh Wow. Simply amazing score lines to gaze upon.

And Jeff Cunningham bagging 4, yes FOUR, goals for Dallas just 2 days after their star Kenny Cooper was sold to 1860 Munich! The big tally gives Cunningham 112 all time, #3 on the list, just 2 behind #2 Ante Razov, with Jaime Moreno still at #1 with 128.

Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch does a lighthearted Q & A with Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven.

Mitchell also reviews the Crew win in Colorado.

Two other Crew stories say, 1) the team is very close to signing Venezuelan Emilio Renteria from Caracas FC - although other versions of this story say he is just coming on a try out. And 2) Stern John will not be back in Columbus this fall as he has just signed with Crystal Palace in the English Championship division.

Oh, and from now on I will refer to Crew striker Steven Lenhart as Sheepshead.

Seattle showed it's expansion team form this weekend getting punked 4-0 by lowly San Jose. The Seattle Times tells us about it.
-Jose Romero has post game quotes from both teams: San Jose - AND - Seattle.

Are all the new players starting to pay off for San Jose? Let's hope it's not too late for them to make the playoff race even crazier. But they have a long ways to go, and short time to get there.

Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis has had a 2nd game added onto to his Red Card suspension because it was his second such offense this season. He also had 2 last year, and 1 the year before, all for going after referees.

Grahame Jones of the LA Times writes about the tradition of Barcelona.

Jones with a match report.

Helene Elliot of the LA Times writes about the importance of games like this on the American soccer landscape. Although in my opinion it's not fair to compare event games like this to week in and week out league games in any league.

Yanks Abroad talks to Ryan Miller about his crazy Swedish 2nd division team that happens to have 4 Americans - Ljungskile.

Soccer by Ives with a great story on Brad Guzan who led Aston Villa to the pre-season Peace Cup title by zeroing Juventus for 90 minutes plus overtime, then stuffing PK's by Vincenzo Iaquinta & Alessandro Del Piero in the shootout which Villa won 4-3. Eric Lichaj also went the whole 120 minutes in defense for Villa.

Freddy Adu is probably headed out of Benfica, and he is saying that he wants to be in the Netherlands. Maybe former USA star Earnie Stewart and NAC Breda will snap him up??
