why is south Africa in world cup qualifying? don't they get an automatic bid?

from wiki: Although South Africa are automatically qualified for 2010 as hosts, they will compete in the CAF qualifiers, becoming the first hosts to compete in World Cup qualifying since 1934. This is because the Confederation of African Football is using its 2010 World Cup qualifiers as the qualifying phase for the 2010 African Cup of Nations, a tournament for which South Africa must qualify separately.

kind of a general question after reading the RSL article - anyone know what kind of grass is commonly used in soccer stadiums that don't use the hated turf? I would imagine fescue so it would be green year round. Is there some kind of super resilient grass they use?
