Portsmouth keeper David James on what he and his England teammates thought of the fake grass they played on in Russia last week: "One interesting point about the game in Russia was how good the pitch was. After all that worry and speculation, it turned out to be fantastic."

Again, I am screaming for some MLS team to go out there and sign Juan Roman Riquelme. He is dying at Villareal where for some reason the team will not even put him on the bench. Go spend the money. He is totally worth it.

My notes from the weekend:
-Chivas winning the Western Conference is frankly quite amazing considering they are in only their third season. Especially when you look at their expansion partner Real Salt Lake who still stink.
-How about that Michael Parkhurst goal from just past the midfield line!!!
-New England signed both Shalrie Joseph & Jay Heaps to multi-year contracts. To me Shalrie was a must-do deal, but Heaps has been consistently getting torched this season, and I could have seen them letting him go in the expansion draft.
-Turns out the best trade Frank Yallop made all year for Los Angeles was sending Robbie Findley to Salt Lake so RF could score the goal on the last weekend that knocked Colorado out of playoff contention.
-Josh Gros of DC has been put on the shelf for the rest of the season. I am sure it had plenty to do with his headaches, but he also went ahead with a bone graft in his wrist. Get well Josh, and we hope to see you fit next season. (You don't mess around with head injuries.)
-It was amazing that John Thorrington of all people scored the winning goal for Chicago. He was released by the team after a series of injuries. And a series of injuries chased him out of Europe a couple years ago too. He was one of those young guys with a ton of potential that never panned out. How cool would it be if things came together for him now?
-Dasan Robinson showed some real speed yesterday as he continued to run down LA attackers. He had to cuz he was out of position a lot and had to react, but positioning can be taught, speed can't. He is way faster than I had ever noticed before.
-Troy Roberts had a really good game in the center of defense for LA too.
-Landon Donovan is a FORWARD. Does no one recognize this. He is not an out side midfielder. He could play behind the two front runners and be effective too. But there he was yesterday out on the wing in the one game LA needed the most. Brutal. Bradley keeps doing this crap to him at team USA too.
-Toyota Park set a new attendance record on Sunday of 21,374.
-One of my favorite moments of the Chicago-LA game - Blanco & Vagenas collide, Blanco stays down, Vagenas screams at him! Photo.
-George Tanner of FC Rocky said that former Colorado midfielder Kyle Beckerman sent a clear message to his old team Colorado by earning a yellow card just 3 seconds into their grudge match on Saturday night. Beautiful.
-Toronto not only had a streak of 822 goalless minutes at one point this season, but the ended the season with a record low of only 25 goals all season (30 games).
