Gold & Golder Shades Of Gold News
One of du Nord's favorite soccer writers is Andrea Canales. She had what sounds like an awful run in with a player last weekend. Marcos Gonzalez of Columbus was the culprit. Gonzalez later spoke to the Columbus Dispatch about what happened. I just want to go on record fully supporting Canales and hoping women get more and more chances to shine in sports and journalism, cuz it helps us all. And if I ever come across Gonzalez I will make sure to let him know I think he was out of line.
Ze Copa America:
It's been all action so far. Not a single dull game of the four. And Mexico beating Brazil, what can you say. The two Mexi goals were stunning. But we will always wonder how the game would have turned out if the Brazilian goal in the 7th minute had counted instead of wrongly being called offside. We will never know. Sometimes you gotta be good AND lucky to win. And also, Brazil were terrible. Just terrible.

I had never heard of the term "Benelux" and was figuring it was gonna be a cluster of islands in the S.Pacific. But now that I know who they are I'm hoping they'll get the Cup if the US doesn't.

Bruce Arena is such a prick.
"That's my team."
Whatever.
He never would've inserted Clark at halftime.
He wouldn't have given Feilhaber a chance yet. Nor Bornstein. Probably not Bradley.
Eh. Go away.
I think that it is also telling that Arena is against participation in the Copa America. How can it possibly hurt to play in the Copa? Sure they got spanked 4-1 in the first game, but won't the young players come away the better for it? Won't Eddie Johnson feel more comfortable the next time he faces world-class defenders? Sure the squad isn't built to compete at the highest level, but that doesn't make it a worthless endeavour.
While I enjoy Arena's bluntness, I agree with anonymous, it is time for Arena to coach the Red Bulls (which he is doing quite well) and forget about the job that he wishes that he still had.
Canales certainly didn't deserve what happened to her in the Crew locker room....but is she really one of your favorite soccer writers? C'mon dude, her work is full of errors stemming from poor understanding of the game. For example, she will say "Landon had a great game in midfield" when he was clearly playing up front. And let's not forget the slime job she ran on Clint Dempsey, calling him gutless because he didn't take a PK in the MLS Cup. I think she's one of the worst writers we have in the US (alongside Jen Chang).
Again, I still feel sorry for her for what took place in Columbus. Gonzalez is a douche.
Thanks foe writing about this.
