Grubby Lil Grubworm News

How did American defender Jay DeMerit of Watford spend his New Year's Eve?: I spent New Year's Eve by myself in a hotel room watching "Children of Men" with Clive Owen. I looked at the clock at 12:01 and thought, "Oh, no. Well, Happy New Year to myself."

Correction: Team USA training camp officially opens Thursday, not yesterday.

I think it's all just English tabloid transfer window hype but the big rumors of the day involve USA & Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu. His Belgian team has started training in Portugal for the second half of their league season, but he is not with them. One report, from Sky Sports, has him headed to Fulham in England! Yes, Fulham - the new USA team of Europe. Another says he is in Italy to meet with Milan. There has been no further word about a move to Real Madrid. I am having a really hard time buying this Fulham story. Another source, the Daily Mail, claims his price tag is only 1 million Pounds. I just don't believe it.
ADDITION: Yanks Abroad has now spoken to both Oguchi Onyewu and his team Standard Liege. They both say that if Fulham or any other club want to buy him then they will have to come up with a lot more than 1 million pounds. Onyewu will head to Portugal tomorrow to join up with his current team's training camp!

Another story closer to home for me has Steven Goff of the Washington Post reporting that MLS has signed Twin Cities boy Abdusalam Ibrahim to a Generation Adidas contract. The striker is currently at the US Residency program in Florida! He is on the official list of those invited to the MLS combine this week too.

Football Italia says Luis Figo is going NOWHERE. Inter Milan owner Mossimo Moratti say he is not going to Saudi Arabia, but is staying right there with them! Wow! What is going on?

AAAAAGGGGHHH! The sheer fucking horror of this story could make me go blind: Glenn Davis at the Soccer Hour is reporting that Steve Sampson has met with Chivas USA about their open coaching position!!!! Maybe Pat Robertson was right?!?!

A reminder that the MLS combine starts on Friday (full roster & schedule included) in Fort Lauderdale Florida. This is the big try-out camp for MLS Superdraft hopefuls. The draft itself happens a week later on Jan 12 from Indianapolis. The past few years you could see the draft on FSC, but I believe this year it will be broadcast on some version of ESPN. I would bet you will see Alan Hopkins at the helm for the network.

I missed this one a couple of weeks back - A Toronto Star reporter was one of several hundred people who took part in the open try outs for Toronto FC. He writes about his experience.

According to a report from KMBC TV in Kansas City, the Wizards & their friends spent over $1 million lobbying for a new stadium in last Novembers elections. Their opponents spent only $18,000 and still won by a 2-1 margin. Yeah, now that was money well spent!!!

I am getting a good laugh hearing Jose Mourinho whine about the high cost of quality players in the transfer window. He says every team is shaking him down for over-top-fees. What is he bitching about? Chelsea set the new table with all their wild spending the past three seasons. Not sit down, shut up, and eat what is served, or get out! I think we've all heard quite enough outta you buddy!

Let's end with a hot picture of Zidane.

I saw that photo about a week ago and that's all I could think was that it was protection for head-butting. Not even funny anymore but how can you not think of that when you see that goofy thing on his head.
