The Italian TIM Cup Final:
Inter 3-1 Roma - With 4-2 aggregate win Inter claim their second straight TIM cup! Esteban Cambiasso, Julio Cruz & Obafemi Martins scored for the winners, and Shabani Nonda got a late one for the losers. Maybe the biggest news from the match was not the score though. Pairings for the Quarterfinals in La Copa Libertadores!
-First legs are played this week, then the whole tournament takes 2 months off for the World Cup. So the second leg matches will not be played until mid-to-late July. I find that a little odd, but go figure:
May 9 Chivas Guadalajara 0-0 Vélez Sarsfield
May 10 Liga Dep. Universitaria 2-1 Internacional
May 10 Estudiantes LP 1-0 São Paulo FC
May 11 River Plate 2-2 Libertad
-Second leg matches in July:
July 18 Libertad - River Plate
July 19 Internacional - Liga Dep. Universitaria
July 19 São Paulo FC - Estudiantes LP
July 20 Vélez Sarsfield - Chivas Guadalajara
-The away goal rule DOES apply in the knock out stages.
-Sports Illustrated with a recap of Thursdays match.
-And now the Copa takes a break until after the World Cup.

From the "little things mean a lot file":

The stadium in Chicago looks great. But why, oh why, are the seats BLUE? The Fire--the primary tenants--wear red, the seats should be red. End of story.

I'm looking at that Ghana squad and I'm thinking: The US better get some results against Italy and the Czechs if they want to get out of the first round.

Can I just say that Columbus should not get these friendlies against European competition? No particular reason but jealousy, but still.

And, Ken, who besides Essien and Amoah are you so afraid of on that team?

Kuffour for one (Roma). I'm looking more at the clubs they all play for, not the actual players themselves. I'm no expert - for all I know most of these players could be playing on reserve squads. But you've got just about every league in Europe represented on that team. Turkey, France, Holland, Denmark, Scotland, Germany, Italy. The US can't boast that. We just can't "count" on a win aginst this team. To me we should hope that Ghana will have already lost to Italy and the Czechs by the time we play them and they will have nothing to play for. But of course that strategy didn't work with Poland in the last World Cup,who lost their first 2 games and them kicked our butts.

I'm actually surprised to see Kuffour on Ghana's roster. I guess he's learned how to be a team player, after being kicked off the squad during 2002 qualifying.

That might have something to do with the change in coaches.

Ken. I think we have players currently on the roster who have at one point played in literally every country you mentioned but Turkey, they just don't now. Though you are right that there are some powerhouse squads mentioned in that team list.

Yes, you are correct. It's just a tough group and I'm a bit worried...

I wish I was feeling more confident but I have to admit I haven't been lately. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.
