Honeymoon Legs News

Ethan G has sent us a really exciting news flash from the Philly area where an ownership group wants to march forward NOW and bring a team to the area before they are even done building a stadium. They are talking next year! Which, given that Toronto joins the league next year already would give MLS the desired 14 teams in 07 instead of the awkward 13. Wild times.

US Soccer has some backstage video footage of our beloved coach walking around the ESPN building before the roster announcement. I personally think that the FA should have given the job to Sam Allardyce.

Weighing in on the US WC roster, my feeling is that Twellman should have gone over Ching for one simple reason: Age. Get the guy some WC experience while he's still young, as opposed to Ching who may be too old to make WC squads in the future. My sense is Ching won't have a chance to make the 2010 squad and so, by then, Twellman could at least have one under his belt (yea, I know, Ching is only 2 years older than Twellman. But he looks more than 2 years older and that's what counts to me).

And did the stupid ESPN announcer really say "Eric Wylanda" on Tuesday night? That's what I heard, and it's not the first time I've heard those idiots pronounce his name wrong. Get a clue...the guy works for yer network for pete's sake!!!! At least get his name right.

I mean, c'mon now...

Actually, with Wylanda's er...I mean ahhh Eric W.'s ego I actually had to laugh. I agree with El Bruceo. If you watch the U.S. video of Arena at the ESPN headquarters it is really funny because there are all these people there talking to him that you can just tell don't know a freaking thing about the game.

Moron or not, that is not what I am attempting to address here. The point is that the network that employs him should at least be able to get his name right. This, coupled with the U.S. video of Arena at the ESPN headquarters, proves that soccer is barely on the radar screen at ESPN and any employee of that company who has been assigned to be a part of covering the WC (beyond ex-soccer players) probably sees it as a demotion or punishment for some previous job performance issue. It is for this reason that I will probably end up watching most of the tournament on Univision.

heard. well, they'll step up their act come cup time, I'm sure. I mean, they're broadcasting every game. so... its in their best interest to make the coverage good. Trouble is, most of the announcers - ex players included, just aren't that good at it. wynalda is the absolute worst, though balboa isn't far off. all wynalda does is talk crap on people.

the absolute best announcers I've ever heard are the BBC Radio guys. Their coverage of the Euro tourney was magnificent. Some of the SKY TV people come close, but the BBC radio guys are easily the best.
