Some News for Mon Aug 1, 2011

STARTERS

Jonathan Spector has signed with Birmingham of the English Championship (2nd division) today.

KLINSMANN

Jurgen Klinsmann was officially introduced this morning as the new head coach of the USA, but he didn't answer any question on what his plan is to revive the team, and US Soccer president Sunil Gulati gave no answers to questions on whey Bob Bradley was replaced.

dN

Here is a complete transcript of the event. No video available yet.

dN

ESPN has 3 video clips though: an interview with Klinsmann, a roundtable discussion and words from Alexi Lalas.

dN

We could know the USA roster for the Mexico game as early as Wednesday. I would think it will be Thu or Fri before we see that list.

Claudio Reyna will remain as the director of youth, and Tab Ramos who is currently the interim U20 coach will be a part of the new set up, but no word on his exact role.

Who those other people around Klinsmann will make a BIG BIG difference.

dN

George Vecsey of the NY Times on the Klinsi persona.

dN

Raphael Honigstein of Sports Illustrated breaks down the abilities of Klinsmann.
-He is a manager, not a coach. So who will he hire as his #2, the coach.

dN

Brian Straus of Sporting News interviews US Soccer youth director Claudio Reyna on the future development of Team USA.

dN

Steve Davis of Sports Illustrated tries to figure out some of the players who will benefit from the new coach and who will suffer.

dN

FIFA.com on the introduction of Klinsmann.

dN

Gabrielle Marcotti of the Wall Street Journal is not as sold on Klinsmann as many others are, and lays out his doubts.

dN

Jack Bell of the New York Times at the Klinsmann introduction today.
-Here is a photo from that intro session:

TWITTERVERSE/FACEBOOKING

"stalls in Alianza locker rooms have a place to keep lit cigarettes."
-Andrew Wiedeman of FC Dallas who traveled to El Salvador last week to play against Alianza in the CONCACAF Champions League

STORY OF THE DAY

"There were a lot of fans here in the stands that were pretty biased towards Carlos (Ruiz) from the start. They have made bad comments about him being a diver, not working hard enough and it was really getting tired from all of us, that's why we accepted the offer."
-Peter Nowak - head coach of the Philadelphia Union

Kerith Gabriel of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that Union forward Carlos Ruiz is being sold to an undisclosed team (rumor says Veracruz of the Mexican 2nd div, but that is being disputed in other rumors), mainly because fans have rejected him as a player.

Union players are said to be very disappointed in the transfer.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

Pari Marosevic sat on the bench in Dallas, gets traded and days later he plays for TFC then scores a great long range goal.

dN

Dwayne DeRosario's second goal for DC against San Jose was a fantastic give and go with Pontius. Not to mention the exact placement of the shot.

dN

Two important goals happened when centerbacks fell down and assassins were turned loose on helpless goalkeepers. Landon Donovan - and - Dwayne De Rosario.

dN

Portland rings up a powerful counter attack and Eddie Johnson buries it - courtesy of their two most dynamic players - Sal Zizzo and Diego Charra.

dN

A classic Houston goal that we have seen few of this season - Brad Davis clears space, drops it off for Geoff Cameron to quickly cross, and who is there to slam home the header? Brian Ching of course.

dN

Lazy defending off a throw-in lets Pablo Mastroeni of Colorado stroll in on goal, make a great move and then curl one to the back post. Great goal.

dN

Colorado gets another goal on a midfield turnover that sees end to end burners Omar Cummings and Sanna Nyassi fly down field with Cummings making the perfect pass and Nyassi the powerful finish. Damn those guys are faaaaaaaaaast.

dN

And the my fave goal of the week comes from Philadelphia as young Roger Torres chests down a 40 yard pass in traffic, shimmies around two different defenders and cranks a shot to the near post for a dynamite goal. Then he does the Carlos Ruiz tribute mohawk celebration.

AMERICANS IN EUROPE

Stuart Holden is back training (not full throttle yet though) with Bolton for the first time since he had his knee split open in a terrible tackle last spring.

dN

Josh Gatt scored the game winner for Molde!

dN

Centerback Brad Rusin took the ball from midfield and cruised all the way into the 6 yard box to score his first goal in Denmark. It was very impressive, and seemed to stun his teammates.

dN

Clarence Goodson was out sick and missed Brondy's bad home loss on Saturday.

dN

Matt Taylor scored 3 goals for Paderborn in the German DFB Pokal on Saturday.
-But I have to ask, why they were pouring it on when they had a 0-5 lead at half time? They scored in the 79th, 83rd, 84th and 86th. Where they getting pay back for something in the past. Otherwise that was pretty out of line.
-Schalke did a similar thing at Teningen, after leading 1-6 at half time they finished off 5 more to win 1-11. Why?

dN

Alex Labidou of Goal.com does a Q & A with Alejandro Bedoya on Bob Bradley, and his January move to Rangers.

Anonymous Minnesota Nice FC said...

Regarding the "pouring it on" late in the game by Paderborn. If I pay money to see a match, I am paying money to watch my team play. If the other team happens to be terrible, fine, but I am not going to watch them go up 5-0 and then just pass the ball around so as to take it easy on the other team. It wasn't a friendly.
