CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying

The draw was held today in Brazil.

And from the looks of things this is about as easy a path as the USA could hope for. No real threats until the Hexagon.

The USA enters in Round 3 (of 4) and has been drawn into Group A with Jamaica & the winners of what look to be the 2 weakest groups from the previous round (Rd 2) E & F.
-Rd 2 - Group E: Grenada, Guatemala, St Vincent & Grenadines, Belize. Group F: Haiti, Antigua & Barbuda, Curacao, US Virgin Islands
-Top two from Rd 3 go to Hexagon!
-Top three from Hex go to World Cup, and 4th place goes to home and away playoff with the winner from Oceania for another WC spot.

Here is the full CONCACAF draw:

STARTERS - GÖ TIME FÖR KLINSI

Jurgen Klinsmann is finally the new USA head coach. The federation has been chasing him for 5 years.

Get this - its his 47th birthday on Saturday.

And its one of the greatest days for the umlaut in modern America.

Klinsmann's home page has not been updated yet. (Remember when we used to call it a home page.)

And by next week at this time Klinsy will have announced his first USA roster, for a game that is happening in 12 days.

The German press are speculating that he will hire his former Bayern Munich assistant Martin Vasquez to work with him. Vasquez was head coach for one season at Chivas USA last year and is currently the director of the Real Salt Lake youth academy in Arizona.

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated on the new hire.

The U20 World Cup begins today without the USA in the tournament. This USA team is looking for a new head coach too.

JÜRGEN KLINSMANN NAMED HEAD COACH OF U.S. MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM

From the U.S. Soccer Communications Center:

Former World Cup Champion’s First Match in Charge of U.S. MNT Will be Against Mexico on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia

CHICAGO (July 29, 2011) — U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati named Jürgen Klinsmann as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team today, making him the 35th coach in the history of the program.

“We are excited to have Jürgen as the head coach of our Men’s National Team,” said Gulati. “He is a highly accomplished player and coach with the experience and knowledge to advance the program. Jürgen has had success in many different areas of the game and we look forward to the leadership he will provide on and off the field.”

U.S. Soccer will hold a press conference in New York on Monday, Aug. 1, to formally introduce Klinsmann. Further details regarding the press conference will be released later today.

Klinsmann’s first match in charge of the U.S. National Team will be against Mexico on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia. Tickets are still available for the match. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3.com and Univision. In addition, Univision will air a live pre-game show beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET.

“I am proud and honored to be named the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Klinsmann. “I would like to thank the U.S. Soccer Federation for the opportunity, and I’m excited about the challenge ahead. I am looking forward to bringing the team together for our upcoming match against Mexico and starting on the road toward qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.”

Klinsmann has been involved in soccer almost his entire life as a player, coach, television analyst and consultant. As a player, Klinsmann was one of the game’s premier forwards and enjoyed a 17-year career that included stints in four major European leagues for a number of clubs, including VfB Stuttgart, Inter Milan, AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich. One of the most well-known international players of all-time, he earned 108 appearances for Germany and scored 47 goals while helping the team win the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and the 1996 European Championship.

After retiring from professional soccer following the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Klinsmann moved into different areas of the sport. He also moved to the United States with his wife, Debbie, and they currently reside in California with their two children, Jonathan and Laila.

In July of 2004, Klinsmann was named manager of the German National Team. He guided Germany to a 20-8-6 record and a third place finish in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, earning him Coach of the Year honors in Germany. Despite stepping aside as Germany’s manager after the World Cup, he left a foundation for ongoing success, including the core of the German National Team coaching staff and players.

Two years later, Klinsmann took over the head coaching position at Bayern Munich. Under his guidance, Bayern reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Champions League, losing to eventual champion Barcelona. Overall, his record with Bayern from 2008-09 in all competitions was 25-9-9.

BOB BRADLEY’s TENURE AS HEAD COACH OF U.S. MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM ENDS

From the U.S. Soccer Communications Center:

CHICAGO (July 28, 2011) — U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati announced today that Bob Bradley has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team.

"We want to thank Bob Bradley for his service and dedication to U.S. Soccer during the past five years,” said Gulati. “During his time as the head coach of our Men’s National Team he led the team to a number of accomplishments, but we felt now was the right time for us to make a change. It is always hard to make these decisions, especially when it involves someone we respect as much as Bob. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

This announcement comes after a meeting at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., between Gulati, Bradley and U.S. Soccer CEO Dan Flynn.

Bradley was named the head coach of the U.S. MNT in January of 2007 and during his five-year tenure compiled a 43-25-12 record. He led the team to a number of accomplishments, including winning the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, finishing second in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, winning their World Cup qualifying group and advancing to the Round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

U.S. Soccer will have a further announcement on Friday.

Seattle went to Panama and put forth a very weak effort against a physical but not so talented San Fran. The Sounders went with their usual starting 11 but just could not make the right passes at the right time, and more than a few players had plain old bad games. The soft turf and high humidity seemed to really take it out of them.

On the other hand Herediano of Costa Rica showed what you do to minnows in your home leg. 8-0 winners.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I am done with Europe. I was fortunate enough to win everything on the national team and club level. I’m happy with that and I’m happy here to help my team win something. And I’ve been saying since I arrived here that it’s been more than amazing for me. We played in Seattle before 48,000 people. There are some amazing players in this league who maybe have a future playing in Europe. I’ve been surprised by the level of physicality and understanding of the players in the league.”
-Thierry Henry on his past, present and future.

QUOTE OF THE DAY 2

"We have had a couple of training sessions over here and there were more spectators there than I experienced during matches in my time in Denmark and Norway. And this is supposed to be a country that doesn't like football. It is amazing. When you come somewhere like this, you really see how massive Manchester United is."

THE FIFA SCANDAL STORY NEVER ENDS

FIFA: Mohammed Bin Hammam has been banned from any and all football activities for life. He was found guilty of bribing Caribbean Football Union (CFU) member federations in exchange for vote for him in the FIFA Presidential election.

dN

Here is the official press release from FIFA.
-And here is video of the press conference announcing the ethics committee verdict.

CFU staff members Jason Sylvester & Debbie Minguell have received 1 year bans from football for there part in helping hand out the bribe money.

CONCACAF secretary general and FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer has been warned by FIFA that talking to media during the inquiry was a no no.

dN

As for Bin Hammam he has posted his rebuttal to the FIFA decision on his blog.
-His plan is to appeal, appeal, appeal.
-And he has said he will NOT step down as president of the Asian Football Confederation while the appeal process is going on.

dN

Sky Sports got an exclusive interview with Bin Hammam in which he calls Sepp Blatter a dictator, and then says that whenever a dictator feels threatened he will have the threatenor executed! Bin Hammam also levels plenty of other accusations toward everyone who challenges him on his guilt. See video here.

dN

ITV has words from Chuck Blazer after the verdict was handed down.

dN

Martyn Ziegler of the Press Association Sports says a new FIFA investigation could look into 3 more FIFA members and 15 CFU members involving the same bribery case.
-The 3 FIFA members accompanied Bin Hammam to the CFU meeting where the bribery took place.
-24 CFU members were at that same meeting, and 9 came forward to report the bribery. The other 15 are now under suspicion.

dN

Paul Kelso of The Telegraph sees very little changing in FIFA as long as Sepp Blatter and his cronies remain in charge.

THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

If you tuned in to the Red Bulls game against Dallas on Saturday night and the crowd sounded like the equivalent of high school soccer then you were hearing what hardcore New York fans hoped you would hear. In protest of their teams 16 year trophy drought and royally pissed off that the team threw in the towel on the very winnable Open Cup this season the south stands at Red Bull Arena vowed that they would protest with silence in the first half of the game. They posted their open letter to the team around the internet, including here at the Empire Supporters Club page.
-Can you blame them? I can't.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

Here are my faves from the weekend:

Justin Braun of the Chivas USA snags his second hattrick of the season, with #2 being the best of the bunch:
JB1
JB2
JB3

dN

The new guy in KC, Jeferson, with one "f", does his part on this gorgeous pass to Omar Bravo who beats the Toronto keeper, cuz where were the defenders, for a great goal.

dN

A fantastic overhead scissor kick from Kei Kamara gives KC a huge goal to start them on their way to victory.

dN

Some great passing by Dallas across and down the field leaves Marvin Chavez alone in front of goal and his shot takes a deflection into the back of the net.

dN

Best goal of the week must go to Thierry Henry of New York, who fakes right, waits for everyone to bite, then goes to the left for a perfect strike to tie the game late.

dN

And lets end with this most ridiculous goal of the season - Kosuke Kimura of Colorado sends in a long hopeful ball from 70 yards out, and all of a sudden it takes a huge bounce and goes right over the head of Revs keeper Matt Reis for an improbably unintended goal. It was almost the game winner too. That would have been mega-embarrassing for the Revs.
