THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

I remember back not many years ago when the event of a big name international club team coming to America to take on a MLS team was not only a rarity, but also a very big deal with fans from coast to coast. My how things have rapidly changed. Now it's barely news outside of the city where the game is being held (although the size of the crowd is still huge), and even bigger news, the MLS teams are more than likely winning. And who says our league is not progressing.

Boots for Aba’fana

BOOTS for ABA’FANA
Football Supporters Kick Up Awareness and Fundraising Effort for South Africa

Chicago, Illinois USA (May 5, 2010): Two advertising executives united by their love for the “beautiful game” set out to experience the first-ever World Cup staged in South Africa together, but along the way found a greater adventure was ahead of them.

During the planning of their journey, they were introduced to the fastest growing township in South Africa, Khayelitsha, on the outskirts of Cape Town, via their local tour guide. They were introduced a local coach, with the football-appropriate name of Manchester, who struggles to find the simplest of gear for his team.

Within the shadows of the magnificent stadiums and world-class facilities built specifically to showcase and change perceptions of Africa and reposition the continent in a positive light with South Africa as the theater and Africa the stage, these young boys, literally don’t have shoes to kick about on rocky, pebble-covered pitches.

Like many townships in South Africa, it is economically challenged and although it attracts funding from international aid agencies, the outreach to those in these communities is sparse.

“There aren't many opportunities for developing countries to take on the world's super powers, but the World Cup provides that chance every four years. The energy and pride of those supporting their countries is a spectacle in and of itself. We’ve made a commitment after the last World Cup to make the trek every four years for as long as we’re able to, to share our love of the game with those less fortunate than us, ”says Alex Grant, an Account Executive at The Wall Street Journal, “I believe football (soccer) to be the world’s great equalizer.“

Alongside David Herman, Prime Minister of Public Relations of One United USA, they founded "Boots for Aba'fana" (Aba'fana means "the boys" in Zulu: http://facebook.com/bootsforabafana) with the goal of raising five thousand dollars before the jettison to Johannesburg on June 4, 2010.

Alex and David are looking to leverage their friends and colleagues in the digital space and their “friends in football” to help raise awareness, provide equipment and fund the purchase of a wheelchair to assist one of the mobility disabled boys while hopefully instilling hope for possibly the next generation of world class footballers to possibly come from this impoverished township. Or, if anything, bring a smile from those who love the game as much as we do.

The official slogan for the 2010 FIFA World Cup is “Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa's Humanity.”

(Ke Nako means simply, it’s time).

My thoughts on last nights game:

I think the game was a sellout. It sure looked full to me.

In a very flawed game the USA took a 1-0 lead, then surrendered 2 goals, then tied it up, and promptly surrendered 2 more goals. Not good.

The better part of the USA regular rotation watched the game from a private suite, while several backups got a chance to show what they had.
-Sitting out: Jozy Altidore, Carlos Bocanegra, Michael Bradley, Jay DeMerit, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Benny Feilhaber, Tim Howard
-3 other players who are virtual locks for the WC roster were on the game day roster but did not see the field - Ricardo Clark, Marcus Hahnemann & Jonathan Spector.

Oguchi Onyewu was on display last night too, and the rust is very apparent. If the tournament started this weekend I don't see how he could play.

Robbie Findley and Chad Marshall did not play at all.

The left fullback scene was a nightmare for the entire 90 minutes with Jonathan Bornstein stinking up the first 45 minutes and Heath Pearce possibly even worse in the second half.

Edson Buddle took a real shot to the mouth early in the game and ended up getting stitches in his upper lip at half time.

dN

du Nord Three Stars Of The Game

3. Stuart Holden - lots of movement, lots of good positive passing, and even more aggresive late when the moved him into the middle of the field. Give him some more time in there and he will pick some locks.
2. Clarence Goodson - had a good night overall and a great goal, but if you are part of a back 4 that gives up 4 then you are not the top player of the game.
1. Libor Sionko/Jan Polak - both terrorized the USA defence ever time they got near or in the box. Both also scored goals, and then made teammates look really good several times each.
NOTE: I also thought that Beasley, Torres, Gomez, Rogers, Ching & Cherundolo had good games.

dN

You know that pissed off look that Clint Dempsey has a lot of times? Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated finds out where some of that is coming from. Dempsey does not mince words.
-I too have been critical of Deuce, but I love the guy, and he has ALWAYS proved me wrong. I have to imagine that this rage is partially what fuels his great performances too.

It is a great honor & dream come true to play for my country. Thx for all the congrats.

WHY NOT!

If something as small as not having enough MLS players available for the Gold Cup and Copa America 3 years ago was even close to a major sticking point that drove Juergen Klinsmann away from coaching the USA, then I say good riddance. That event is small potatoes in the long run, and the way US Soccer handled it was exactly how I would have done it.

WHY?

The latest FIFA rankings came out today, and I don't care. But.... if you take a look at the whole thing, I think you can break it down like this - the top 9 teams are in one group - Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England and France, with the next 10-50 could all be thrown into a pot and drawn out at random, they are all that close to each other.

How cool is it that the man I call the greatest basketball player of all time shows up at Team USA training! Bill Russell. 13 years in the NBA and 11 Championships. He even won 2 NBA titles as a coach. Before that 2 years in a row as NCAA Champ at San Francisco. And even an Olympic gold medal winner. He is a pure through and through winner! Not to mention his amazing stand on civil rights!
At 6'9" he regularly shut down the famous Wilt Chamberlin who stood 7'1" (and won only 2 NBA titles).

MLS INJURY REPORT

Seattle's top rate centerback Jhon Kennedy Hurtado will be out the next 6-8 weeks due to a torn left anterior cruciate ligament.

DU NORD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

How can it not be San Jose midfielder Bobby Convey! He is finally seems completely out of his own personal goo goo much and tearing down the left side of the field again. Its fantastic to see someone with so much promise turn it all back around again.

MY THOUGHTS

21,154 was the average attendance for the 5 games on Saturday & Sunday, and could have been higher if the KC max capacity was bigger.

San Jose has now gone 4 games without giving up a goal. 3 wins and 1 loss, with 6 goals scored too.

And Chris Wondolowski is just tearing it up for the Earthquakes in front of goal. He has played in 6 games and nabbed 5 goals. Is this his year?

Houston's yo-yo season was back up!

20 year old Danny Cruz got his first ever MLS start and goal for Houston!

Tally Hall also got his first league start and got the shut out for Houston.

There is a chance we might see KC's Craig Rocastle further punished by the league for the vicious kick he put on Columbus's Renteria while laying on the ground. The ref gave him a yellow card, but it was red worthy.

And how about Renteria making two sub appearances this week and bagging big goals in each of them! Nicely done!

Great to see Shalrie Joseph back on the field for New England this weekend.

But the Revolution team are seriously running on all flat tires right now as they have not won in the past 7 league games - 2 ties and 5 losses - oof!

Preki is doing his thing for Toronto, no doubt about it. Just like at Chivas for 3 seasons. It's not pretty, but there are no points for looks either.

Chad Barrett did his damnedest to keep his role on the team as "the Vasectomy" missing 2 primo chances, but finally got his head on one and won the game. Great job.

Fuad Ibrahim from right here in my Twin Cities got a rate start for TFC. He is looking grown up these days.

Another Twin Citian Teal Bunbury got his first MLS start with Kansas City on Sunday.

I feel bad about this, but from all the years of my team have a fierce rivalry with Seattle I cannot help but derive a bit of glee every time Seattle loses. I know that makes me petty, then again I am petty.

How bad is the foot injury for RSL's Kyle Beckerman? He was subbed off in the 20th min. I guess we are supposed to know on Tuesday.

Chivas USA committed that old sin of not giving up goals at the ends of halves - one goal at the end of half 1, and another at the end of half 2, at home no less, doomed them against Salt Lake.

MLS/SUM BUSINESS

How about this one - MLS is opening a development academy for Ticket Sales Reps. Yes, you read that right. And for some reason they are staring it right here in my Twin Cities, in connection with our second division team NSC Minnesota Stars. Why not with one of their own teams? Weird, weird, weird!

dN

New York stomped a Juventus team that featured regulars Grosso, Salihamidzic, Zebina, Diego, Trezeguet, Amauri and Del Piero. Juve got their only goal in 2nd half stoppage time. Not bad guys, not bad at all.

If you go to the official Juve website you will see articles about the team arriving in New York, and then it skips right to the big welcome they got in Toronto for a Tuesday game against Sampdoria. Oops. A couple players make mention of the hammering in passing, otherwise you would definitely not know it happened.

The MLS Insider got video of this Juve fan go off on his sorry team.

And in LA the young academy trainee Tristan Bowen gets his first professional Galaxy goal as they beat Boca Juniors. Bowen will certainly get a lot more chances over the next 6 weeks if Edson Buddle makes the USA World Cup team.
